Hi Ben, British Airways are upgrading their fleet, the jumbo jets, or 747s are being retired over the next few years, so they haven't upgraded to the new cabin. If you fly on a BA A380 or 777, 787 etc you'll be much more pleased.

Ben, you'll be quite pleased to know that British Airways actually is working on replacing their old 747s. The London-Cape Town route will likely be flown by an A380 or a Dreamliner pretty soon. Planes just take a while to make. You made a good point about flying half price on an old plane, though, very well said.

Loved this vlog Ben ! Man, CPT-LHR-MIA-Costa Rica in one shot ! Ive been on long haul flights but never that many in one itinerary. Also you're right Ben about the 747s. BA has so many of the old girls that need refurbished or replaced. Guess you'll have to wait until they get their new 787s & A350s for cape town

Ben, British Airways are slowly renewing their fleet of aircraft. The 747's will soon be replaced with the much bigger A380's and more efficient Boeing 787's. You might get the SuperJumbo A380 on your return flight as they mainly use them on the Johannesburg, Hong Kong and Los Angeles flights. Then you will be able to see why you spend a lot to fly BA.

You are not alone with the frustration about their 747s. I paid for premium economy from Boston to London. In fact I almost upgraded to business and I'm so glad I didn't bother... It was on one of those old jumbos, my screen restarted it self twice. First it wouldn't play the safety video then they rebooted the entire plane's system twice. I was seriously peeved off. I tweeted my frustration to them and they are apparently upgrading their planes. The ONLY consolation was that the very nice man at the checkin counter gave me a exit row which meant I had no one next to me and heaps of leg room AND the flight only took like 4.5 hours instead of 6. I think they are buying heaps of newer planes so they can actually afford to take the 747s out of service for refurbishment (as the flight attendant pointed out to me - they can't just remove a plane from service without replacing it with something of the same capacity otherwise they'd loose a heap of money.)

Ben. BA are planning on replacing their planes. There is a plan. Not defending them, just what I know. A few routes include the direct route between Cape Town and Heathrow so that's good news for you in future.
