Over many totally overbuilt DIY tool rests this is something I was looking for. Pure essence of DIY - simple and works.

So who's building the Over Built Tool rests ! Then ?

First one showed missing parts. Second one was complete. It's a working bench grinder kzbin.infoUgkxxC8HPnl24fu0XhMU_nbmWNEUoK1RMHXk . One thing I like alot is that it's surprisingly quiet. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.

Great idea - looks solid. And you can cut any thickness of shim you need with pretty basic tools. I want to mount a round stock holder to do a simple lathe grind.

I like the plate idea! It will work great for sharpening my kitchen knives with a compound coated plywood wheel.

I think it’s a good idea if you don’t have the right grinder to do what you need to get done. I’m looking for the support arms that bolts on the inside of the grinder cover’s, where can I get them from? I live in Michigan.

Hello. Well done. Good luck

Good Idea sir...also put an adjustment bolts under the plate..once two bolts are tightened or loosened we can create the required angles sir

Looks like it does a good job if you don’t have the right machine to do that with. Where can I find the support arms that bolt to the inside of the grinding stone covers?

Great Presentation, may i ask the approximate shim you place between your 2 aluminum horizontal bars approximately 3/16' square, or should it be rectangular. ? Respectfully, Jim P

Nice modification to the grinder. I have a couple I may do that to. I am very curious about the drill press in the background. Will you explain to me what is going on there?

It's a Drill press that drills holes

Buy a 7 inch lathe from Grizzly or Harbor Freight and put it on your credit card. Cut back on eating out for a few months and pay off the lathe and you have a decent Sieg starter lathe.

I like the mod but from what I've read and saw on other channels,You should only use the rest for your hands not for the steel..Or you would never be able to get all the correct angle you need :) but i would defiantly do the mod even just for a rest for my hands,But like everyone Say's there is no wrong way or right way to do this,It's down to personal preference and what works for you.

You should round your stone instead of keeping it flat and work with the center of the stone. That's what I do anyways and was taught.

where did you buy it for $30?

In Principal your idea is good. But it's become hazardous now due to the fact of when your wheel reduces it's diameter, a bigger gap will happen between the grinding wheel and the rest plate, so if any object where to wedge itself between this gap, specially if you're holding it, well...I'll leave that thought with you guys for a moment. If I were you, I'd return the machine to its original specification.

I have a six inch grinder like this purchased from Menards for about $25 in the mid 1980s it still works fine. Had to replace the power switch with a $2 toggle switch 10 years ago because the original plastic switch was smashed in a move still runs fine.
