Guess the lesson here is make sure it's moving properly before you plane it level with the bench.

So the first bit of the movement I have no idea. But I am confused about the top being out of true with the bench… did you final dimension it BEFORE attaching it? I haven’t looked at the mounting instructions for the vise more than quickly as I don’t plan on buying one (making my own) but shouldn’t you have left it proud and then trimmed it down with a hand plane AFTER install?

I did trim and plane the top after the install. Turns out that I had the bushing on the back of the leg snugged up just a smidge too tight. It needs a bit of play in the screw for it to work smoothly, and the back threaded bushing needed to self align a bit better than what I had. Once I loosened it, and I mean, barely loosened it everything ended up working super smooth. The top not being parallel to the top of the bench... this is likely because the 9" pins that hold the cross brace in place aren't perfectly square. After measuring it, I'm about a 32nd off which doesn't sound like much, but it compounds at the top. Honestly, now that it's moving smoothly, the out of parallel between the vice chop and bench top is much less noticeable.

@SurfacePatterns I had a feeling that would do the trick. It says in the instruction to not overly tighten those screws. I just installed my glide vise. My first test runs performed better than yours, but it could be better. So I'm about to play with those screws in the back, which are very tight. If it doesn't get rid of the slight cant I have I will put a piece of paper or cardboard under one side of the nut to square the screw to the leg and bench top. It's counter-intuitive to loosen the screws, but if they say it works, I'm going to do it. And I wouldn't worry about plumb. I'm sure by now you've planed the top to match the bench. Or not. I think it would be better to have it parallel with the bench top, even if it's a touch low.

I finished my Roubo about a month ago and watching your video it appeared that your chop screw is not square to the leg at the 1:53 timeframe (vertically anyway). This may be my vantage point and probably is but I'd check that as well. I remember installing mine despite how accurately I dimensioned and drilled there will always be imperfections that manifest when it all comes together. You have to take into account all of your work and the fabrication of the benchcrafted hardware. Even though it is high quality nothing is perfect. Are you experiencing any drag at the criss cross on the sides of the mortise(s)? That could be the reason for your out of plumb condition. I had to offset my oval bushing a light 1/16" to allow precise butter movement. Hope this helps. I love my bench. Should have built one years ago.

1:52 the glueing of the wood wasnt too good, you can see the gap between the two beams

It's more like a dark line rather than a gap. That line isn't even heavy enough to catch a fingernail on.

I like to think of it more along the lines of spending months to build something, largely by hand, wanting it to work properly, and trying to improve my skills. Then, to help both myself and anyone else, I thought to post the issue I was having for the Hive mind to weigh in on and potentially benefit from. So anyway, it turns out, all I needed to do was loosen one of the bolts a bit, it was too tight. Things were good after that.

I'll say I appreciate this video because I'm running through an issue with how smoothly my second hand screw is working with the criss cross. My screw came with no instructions and I didn't read the screw instructions tied to the criss cross thinking they would skew what I did...looking back that's dumb. While my chop snugs near perfectly with my bench the screw is making a little grinding and I think could be smoother. Because of your video and comments I'll now try to loosen back screws and or leverage cardboard to sew if that makes a difference before I finalize my chop shaping.

3:20 talking about a 1/16. You guys should finally switch to metric measurements
