I have to admit that intellectual property rankles a little, but I’ve bought a couple of clones, so I can’t criticise. That being said, it does remind how much the butterfly tax really costs. OK, the steels probably a little cheaper, but £120 cheaper?

Benchmade blows there price up WAY to much for what it is. I agree with what John Montgomery says about the American workers getting paid more but still factoring in all the above benchmade inflates the hell out of their prices. There are even boycott benchmade forums proving this..

I have both the clones and the original versions of this knife, and I agree it is difficult to see a quality difference at a glance. For daily tasks and general use the Clones do fine. Still, I tend to depend on locking blades more than I do the slip joints, so the Clones are up to the light usage.

There are obvious differences between the two knives especially when you get to the fine details. I was curious I may have missed it are there any stops along the way opening or closing?? Have a great cup of tea.

I got one, quality is quite good. It is a very good fake. Some of the edges are uneven where the micarta meets the metal, but it isn’t a dealbreaker.

I got my Clone non Branded or logo and Looks and works very good. Specially for $16 Enough knife for daily "normal" tasks in the town I just bought the 318 Clip point clone on Ali. By $19.50 Cool to see a Comparison with the real thing. Thanks Paddy 👊😎

I got one after seeing this. It's amazing for the price. The blade steel seems really good, one advert said D2 which I'd believe. The fit and finish is amazing, blade perfect centering and razor sharp. Only issue I have is it saying Benchmade on it. Otherwise its fantastic value for money.

Quick update on the clone. It now has lovely lighter green even micarta and the finsh overall is absolutely stunning. The only way to see a visual difference is the 'first production' on the blade and on the opposite side the benchmade logo being slightly darker than the original.

lt is a counterfit, not just a clone. We had a fake ZEISS rifle scope in the store recently. We took it as part of a trade, so we are stuck with it now. We can't sell it nor will we even give it away. I would pass on buying any counterfit product. In the end, you'll probably save money buying the original over time.

As my Proper cost £15 and also says, " first production 275/1000," I think I can safely say it's a clone! I can also say that if the grip feels almost the same on the real thing as the clone I've got, the real thing ain't worth over a hundred quid more, no matter what the damn steel!

I got one of these knives and it's a spectacular deal for 18 euros. It cuts like a dream. I wouldn't be surprised if the steel were genuine (I have a Manly Wasp in S30V). For the inflated price they are charging for the original, I am not worried about clones or counterfeits, there is more than one way to rip people off. By the way, if you pay such a high price for a knife and then you have to mill out part of the blade, you'd be better off buying the clone. Buying the clone showed me that I can't justify buying the original.

I actually messaged the seller on AliExpress. he told me it was 9cr18mov. Which is still grand for the price. Very similar to 440C in make up and tests. S30V is a US steel so I doubt they could import it for that price.

I'll probably be doing a video when I get mine. It'll be interesting to see how the logos hold up, on a few cheap knives that I've bought I've been able to remove the logos just by rubbing it with a bit of polish.

Well I just got mine. Bloody lovely. Roughly 10% the price of the real thing. Removed the Benchmade logo pronto, because that's just plain wrong. I don't have a genuine Proper to compare it to, and given the price I can't see that position changing! Honestly, this is a really nice pocket knife that I can see getting a lot of pocket time. The pin surrounds are much better done on mine than yours Paddy, and I agree that the slightly higher seating of the closed blade is preferable to the original's - it gives the knife better lines visually. Being picky, there's a very slight gap between backspacing and one of the liners, and I wouldn't mind bit more detent into the open position, the fit/finish is very good although not consistently perfect, but those minor details are all I can find to take issue with. A 5-star knife at this price and a 4-star knife at any price. Time will tell how durable the materials and workmanship are, but it's looking pretty sweet right now.

Removing the Benchmade logo does not clean your hands from buying a counterfeit. Your just as wrong as they are.

Bottom line there is no justification for owning one with or without the logo. Your still perpetuating the problem.

I have had my clone since 4/12 so had it a little over a month. It's as good a penknife as any other I have, what ever work I have put it through it did without any problem. I like the lightweight and the overall design is great but I would never pay what Benchmade wants for it. I have paid over a hundred for my Enzo PK70 and nearly one hundred for my Two Sun TS187 but that is S90V, marbled CF covers and titanium one piece bolster/liners, as nice as the Benchmade is, it is not in the same league. Personally for a knife like the proper it should be pithed at around the $70-$80 mark I really don't think it is worth more than that so at full retail people are paying about $70 for a Butterfly. Just had a look at the Ali' site where I bought my clone, it has 4.8 out of 5 stars and 31 positive reviews. The only thing I dislike is the fake branding, as it is I think they could sell the clones all day if they called it 'The Proper Clone'.

As you know Ian I love my proper with my mods. I personally wouldn't by the dear one for me it's not good enough as a slip joint for that money. But we all have different tastes. I think the tb buy is a good indication of how good a design will be. Atb paddy 👍😃☘️

I've been looking at this very knife. I've had a copy of the Spyderco PM 2 from AliExpress and much like the Benchmade it a true 1-1 copy but again the printing is nowhere as good as the original. For £20 tho I might get one.

Your comment is true. I bought a 940-1 clone and carried it for six months. It was a good and well build knife. I purchased a real benchmade 940 classic this past Christmas and feel really good about it. A little hard to swallow the price but I once heard a knife reviewer say "buy once cry once" and that was it...

I don't have issues with copies but I do with counterfeits and this is a counterfeit. I would never buy one of these. It it said Sanrenmu and was stamped 440C then count me in.

You might catch some flak for doing a video on a clone, but it is what it is--a very decent knife for the money. Very interesting to see the comparison, and it might prevent someone from getting cheated.

@@clarky4492 I've been unable to find the link in the comments, I'd love to see a chemical analysis of the steel though, find out what you're actually getting, if it was S30v you'd have to ask, is the Benchmade worth it if not, it would be in line with my assumptions. The energetics baffles me, you can get a real steel Luna for half of the price and it has a blade with N690, the utilizer, just utility blades, I think £50 is what energetics should have charged, I'd likely have one.

So for the same cost, a person could buy approximately 10 of the clones and throw (or give) them away when they get a bit dull? With a knife (copy) this good, I just don't understand why some people feel compelled to contribute to Benchmade's annual profits. My Bugout clone is amazingly close, extremely sharp and $100 LESS than the 'real' thing = a no-brainer.

I really don't think it is ok to make a counterfeit like that. At least put their own name on it. I'm I the lucky position, that I can actually afford the genuine Proper (clip point) and I love it. If you can not afford it, buy a Sanremu or Ganzo. They make great knives.

the thing about clones/counterfeit knives is that there is no reason for the maker to make a good blade or good knife. Get a cheap knife with the manufacturers name on it and you will probably get better steel and a better knife because the maker's reputation is at stake. For clones, all people care about is does it look like the real thing. They want people to think they shelled out the money to buy the expensive real thing. But at the end of the day the knife is a tool, and a clone doesn't need to be good at cutting, holding an edge etc. So give me a cheap knife any day but not a clone. I don't need to impress people, I just need to cut things, flick it open etc. My satisfaction comes from the function of the knife, not the name on the box.

That's not a clone, it's an outright counterfeit! It's a cheaply made knife with cheap materials that is made to look exactly like a production knife. If they'd built a knife that was similar and used their own name and model number, that's fine, but they're using Benchmade's trademark and representing their knife as a real Benchmade knife. How many of those are going to end up on the secondary market as real Benchmades, and how many people are going to be sucked into buying one of those thinking they're buying a real knife. The fact that you're encouraging them is sickening. You should be ashamed!
