Bendigo Freedom Camp, Central Otago, New Zealand

Bendigo Freedom Camp is located in Central Otago, New Zealand. A freedom camp is a government-owned campsite that you do not have to pay for. I stayed here for 3 nights in January 2023, which is summertime in NZ.
It's located on Lake Dunstan, and it's a short distance from Cromwell, which is a town surrounded by cherry farms. Bendigo Freedom Camp is a good stop-over when you're heading to Queenstown. You can hike in the hills across the road from the camp.
Certified self-contained campers were not a requirement, so campers are allowed to stay in tents if they want to.

It was great staying there after New Year's Eve (which is summer here). I was jealous of your Spain holiday video; my British grandparents retired in Spain. It's a shame our UK passports only give us 90 days there now 😮

Thanks, but I took these photos a year ago (last summer). This summer I had to work, but I'll aim to hit the road again after I finish uploading the last of my photos from a year ago ❤️ The cost of petrol is so crazy high, so I'll save up and go to the North Island in the future.

Is there plenty of room or is it likely to be full over the next couple of weeks (April school holidays)? Or is there a better spot to try with a self contained campervan?

It's only packed over summer and New Year's because that's when all the university students have their summer break. It's unlikely to be busy in April, as the South Island is already quite cold now, so that will put tent campers off staying. With the 3 night maximum stay I mentioned, people are forced to move on after their third night, so that prevents holidaymakers staying longer.
