///UPDATE///
I’m embarrassed by a couple errors in the titles that show up during the video. The sides were thicknessed to .090” not .90” and I now know how to spell blanket! Apologies if these may have caused any confusion.
--------
The sides were resawn, sanded to thickness and bent in my shop. The bulk of the bending is done with a heating blanket clamped to a form but the sides are always touched up on a bending iron. I don't like to build with any unnecessary tension and it is critical to get the profile of the side as close to the desired shape as possible.
If you plan on taking on your first build I recommend sanding the inside surfaces of your sides to save you work down the road. Now the grain will raise with the head from the iron and blanket reacting with any moisture (water) you add but it will still save you tons of time. You only have to knock down the grain, not chasing deep scratches after the sides are bent and fragile.
I use Titebond glue on the joints that aren't critical to the sound of the instrument. I reserve hide glue for bracing. So, Titebond in this video.
Next up reversed kerf lining, profiling the sides and installing side reinforcement bracing. Maybe preparing the tops and back plates... we'll see.
Hit me up with questions in the comments.

StuffUCanMake thank you! It’s taken me a while and I’m slowly replacing small equipment with old iron that needs restoration. Another one of my distractions...

Hi. What is the source of heat in your bending iron? I first used a propane torch, then an electric charcoal lighter. Looking for a better option. Thanks.

Tom Jones I use a charcoal lighter stuffed into a piece of pipe. It works well but I only use it to touch up the sides after coming out of the bending form. In that I use a long heating blanket. I hope this helps. Be well.
