As a young man around 40 years ago my father took me to a local lumber jack and horse show in the hills of Appalachia Kentucky. That was when I was introduced to wood turning. It was a treadle style wood lathe with a sapling as in your video. The craftsman was building tables and chairs all from hand tools starting with logs he used no nails, screws, or glue. We watched for hours! I was very impressed! Thank you for reminding me of a great day with my Dad.

I’m an experienced woodworker and have made many laminated forms as well as steamed. I have nothing but praise for your methodology; it’s exactly how my processes have evolved. It was quite late on that you confirmed that your walnut was air dried - that’s quite important as kiln dried timber can/usually does take bends and steaming quite differently. Separately to the methodology is the design. That’s very personal but I, personally, think your base is very elegant. Sturdy but not chunky. To my eyes. I’d have that in my house. Good clear guidelines so that people can quite easily follow your process.

Thank you very much, Martin! I appreciate the thoughtful comments. And yes, I always try to go kiln-dried when possible, especially with walnut.

That is certainly a beautiful table. So well built and explained. It also brings back memories for me because the bending process was similar to what I did about 20 years ago. A friend of mine taxied his homeuilt aircraft into the side of a hangar door. The rounded wingtip was crushed. He and I made a template from the opposite wing and flipped it over to make a pattern. We used Sitka Spruce cutting 1/8 strips. It turned out beautifully. Of course it was not as thick as yours and the curve was not as acute, but after planing, sanding and recovering, the tip was perfect. He was flying again in short order. Thanks for your video. I really enjoyed it.

I work in the Commercial Casework industry... with 20 years in milkwork. I consider myself a millwork specialist. I do not have a degree in wood products but have definitely worked on some amazing projects and had the pleasure of learning from wood workers whom worked in mills longer than I'd been alive... I must say you're work is impressive. Clean shop and well taken care of machinery are essential to success or avoiding problematic process or even injury. I just wanted to commend your work and relay you are a true craftsman in my eyes. Look forward to watching future projects you may do and share for all the wood working community. Btw... Hi. I am a wood-technician, that works in a firm which makes furniture, and I must say you are the first woodworker on KZbin that I would consider professional. @Steven James Porter I don't watch many woodworking youtubers. And he really was the 1st I would consider professional. Of course there are others that are also professionals, but he is just the first one of the ones I watched. P.S: Making crazy joints doesn't mean your a professional woodworker. It's the way you make them and the techniques you use, and many KZbin woodworkers lake those qualities.
@mrector233 жыл бұрын
@@StevenJamesPorter - Interestingly enough I actually have to agree with Andrej. There are a lot of “content creators” who use wood to make KZbin content, but who aren’t professionals. Professionals are focused on design, efficiency, and customer focused final product. Absolutely GORGEOUS. Thank you. I'm deaf and don't listen to your narration, Why polyurethane rather than wood glue for the bent lamination? No criticism, just getting a better understanding. Thanks.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
No problem! Thanks for watching and the comment. The polyurethane glue has more open time. A standard PVA glue will start to cure too quickly. Each glue-up took about 20 minutes from start to finish and the open time on the Gorilla glue is about 30 mins. Some people seem to have no problem using standard PVA glue for something like this, but for me it’s just another added stressor that I don’t need.

1:28 mmmmphhh! RE: Pre Bending. Yes, I would! Mesmerized and learning loads. I LOVE the fact you stayed with the plan. Discipline mate, not enough of it going around.

That’s pretty incredible. Do you have the call log of the first person you called after the first delivery attempt was made? That is a conversation I’d like to hear. 🤣🤣🤣

😂🤣 My wife was the sounding board for that one. Luckily I had just chugged a double espresso so my mood was somewhat decent. Disappointed and frustrated, but certainly not the expected Hulk mode...yet... 😜😂

Came out great! New sub here! Did they pay for your time as it was built to their original specifications? What did you do with the first one? Thanks for the knowledge and inspiration!

Thanks for the sub and the kind words! Original one is up for sale, so I'll make back the time and money invested. 👍
@pappaflammyboi57994 жыл бұрын
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking The original, built to the correct specifications, should have been paid for by the contracted party. They got exactly what they requested. I can't believe you would let that go.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
Evox so hold them hostage to pay me and never get any more from work from them again? Or try and help a good client out by selling it to someone else? I’ll take the latter. Sticking it to a client will have worse ramifications. And I already have 3 more jobs lined up with this client. I would have had ZERO and a potential small claims court battle.
@pappaflammyboi57994 жыл бұрын
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking You pick your battles I suppose. It's not "sticking it" to the client, it is asking the client to honor your agreement unless you left a lot open to interpretation. Either way, it tells you what kind of client you're dealing with.

I can understand both sides of this conversation, but I have to agree with Keith. I own a business in a different industry but have had customers give wrong specs as well. As long as they can admit it’s on them, I’ll redo it for free. The cost of you eating it is A LOT more then me, but if you can still sell it, at least you make some money back. My business is all custom so I can’t resell the product...but it’s not a huge loss...especially to keep the customer and to have the customer say good things about my customer service. I had a woman trying to blame me right out of the gate...I didn’t remake her order. I tried explaining where her error was, but kept yelling and blaming me...she didn’t want to hear it. That’s NOT a customer I care to keep.
