1953 Bendix Rubber Tub washer. Instead of spinning clothes damp dry, it has a collapsible rubber tub and air pump that evacuates both water and air from the tub. Under vacuum pressure the tub collapses squeezing the clothes against the perforated agitator which wrings out the water.

My Grandma had one of these here in Brazil between the 60's and I still remember how the water fill the tank it was like a fountain. Water fill up from the middle of the agitator. Another thing was the closure system that had a heavy huge cover that kept the vaccum inside. The rubber tube had an amazing old smell of rubber and soap.. old good amazing time! I miss that! Cheers for the video!

Probably the most unique way of extracting water from clothes I've seen. Amazing.

That is pretty cool! I see how that would be great for woolen's or delicates, but I can see all sorts of issues with the rubber disintegrating and since it uses vacuum pressure, I'm sure the seals would eventually be an issue. Thanks for the video

My Grandmother had one of these and I remember her pounding the rubber tub back into place with her fist at the end of the cycle!

I used to have a pump from a machine like this. It was one heck of a pump!

An aunt of mine did own one of those back in the early sixties, here in Brasil. I’m sure it was a Bendix, imported from the US. It was a lot of fun watching it work, especially when “vacuum sucking” the load dry. (Still is, actually! Lol)

how did they come up with these crazy designs back then. Need to bring them back.

I know, right? They didnt survive because they turned out to be too costly and maintenance prone, compared Whirlpool's simple back and forth turning agitator tech

lexmarks567 well for one they were meant to last a lifetime back then. Now everything is disposable. Lucky to get two years out of a new Washer.

I use to service this machine a pinhole in the rubber tub and it was useless, tub had to be replaced, didn't last too long on the market. The pump was so good that a friend of mine used the pump too draw water from a deep freshwater well on his upstate NY property, ah those were the days/

I would have kinda figured this wouldn't have lasted. Rubber tends to not last too long under a lot of stress. It's a cool design nonetheless!

I was under the impression that it would squeeze the water out of the clothes and then go into a short spin cycle to remove what water may have remained. As this is a unique and cool design, I really don't see how it could equal the spin cycle other washers had for water extraction. Give me a Frigidaire Rapidry 1000 rpm any day over this!
