Hi Benjamin, for years I have created security-related maps for our high-crime community in rural South Africa. I stumbled across your channel, and it was a real eye-opener. The resources you share will make my work so much easier and so much better. A big, BIG thank you!

Really amazing stuff. Had no idea about these tools. The potential to export the GeoJSON files and then create a custom map in After Effecs using Geolayers is very exciting.

Another important thing: OSM is a volunteer-made map, so places where people spend less free time on the Western internet, will get mapped less (eg. China, Africa). You should also consider volunteering edits or donating.
@FredyRivera

Perhaps the most important difference between osm and google is the license and the possibilities of use, since osm is actually free for any use, including commercial, while google you can only look at it and you cannot even collect the information.

You could look at open cameras through shodan, or through a bit of google dorking? I actually showed how to find public CCTV feeds that were indexed on Google in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iICxiaiogLOFarM

Thanks Ben - that's very interesting. Regarding the Open Street Map wiki, is it not the case that the data is very hit and miss? I tried a test for CCTV, and then for manmade surveillance in London, and there were far fewer cameras than I would have thought (and none around Liverpool Street train station, which is obviously wrong). Is this just down to definitions of what cameras are in the public domain (rather than govt), or is there another category for this entirely? Really enhjoying your series though and have recommended it to a few people. Cheers

It's all contributor generated, and I don't think most people add CCTV cameras to the map. I personally don't bother with adding them. I mostly focus on pedestrian infrastructure, drinking fountains and toilets.

Find something you are passionate about, that gives you a sense of curiosity or feeling of doing good and piece together the dots online. There are so many potential points of research online. It could be mapping coral destruction, finding stolen dogs sold on websites, verification of community/local news claims, geolocating old world war photos, or reading the headlines and looking a little deeper at what the internet says to find trends and patterns.

What I'm seeing becoming increasingly common is geolocation over time. Would you consider this as a topic? It would take this geolocation mapping to the next level.

I wonder why Google doesn't incorporate all this free data into Google Maps?
@dathat555
@dathat555 2 жыл бұрын
Google did better by making their interface open enough to add any specialty data you fancy. There is no way Google could incorporate the many thousands of free data sets available and keep the UI manageable. Better to allow customization.
@ImperiumLibertas
@ImperiumLibertas 2 жыл бұрын
Google does area querying. It only searches a small area to make queries more manageable and overall cheaper for them. It's not the most informative but usually gets the job done for most people.
