Clothes layering is the key to backcountry safety and comfort. Now the outdoor gear company @finetrackglobal has developed a 5-step layering system beginning with a foundational Elemental mesh layer that forms a dry barrier between your skin and base layer to keep you warmer and drier while the base layer wicks away moisture. Is this new waterproof Elemental layer the key to staying warm and dry outdoors? To test it out, Finetrack sent me the Elemental and Base layers (L1 and L2) to test out, and here are the results!

Second attempt; first got censored for some reason. Cool. I've been wondering about Finetrack. People who try it seem to like it. I've been wearing polypropylene Brynje all Winter, and I like it (a little). By that I mean that it is CONSISTENTLY but only SLIGHTLY drier than wearing open weave like Alpha Direct or Airmesh directly on skin. Warmth-wise, Brynje adds a little warmth, but it isn't a true insulator. AD and Airmesh are warmer and weigh slightly less than Brynje mesh (counter-intuitively). Bonus: Brynje is excellent as a solo layer under a rain jacket in moderate temperatures. I will try the Brynje in the Summer, but I am concerned about the same thing you mentioned with the L1: Will it be too warm to appreciate the drying effect of the mesh? Polypropylene is excellent for a loose mesh like Brynje. It allows evaporation of sweat on the skin, and specifically does not wick, which is actually better (both for cooling and for comfort). The most comfortable Summer shirt I have found so far is a cheap Athletic Works t-shirt from Walmart. It looks a lot like your L1, but with a finer mesh that is perhaps more acceptable to wear as a solo layer in public. It is super breathable and super light. It does wick, but I wear it over-sized for breezy ventilation under the shirt, so the wicking is not a problem. What? You've always heard that "wicking is good"?! Ha. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet. :) Wicking is good for mid layers, but it requires moisture retention in order to wick. Non-wicking fabrics that allow sufficient ventilation (mesh) are actually drier and more comfortable next to skin.

Yeah I'd like to try a more open mesh that just keeps mid layers off my skin. A looser Polypropylene might be perfect, thanks!

@@BackcountryPilgrim Some people even wear two layers of mesh, such as your L1 over Brynje. Wiggy's sells a second layer mesh but they don't give any detail. I don't think I need that but I do enjoy Airmesh over Brynje. It's an extremely breathable combo.

Really love the blue color. Are you planning to test them on a colder day as well? Thanks for the review...

Thanks for the review. Currently a Brynje mesh user and interested in the Finetrack layer. How was the sizing for you? Did you have to size up dramatically? Thx

Wow so far everyone who has commented uses Brynje! I gotta try that out. I followed the size guide and it was fine.

Interesting video. How do you think this compares to Byrnje mesh? What’s the stink factor of finetrack? It matters for thru hiking, since the main competition would be wool and alpaca, which gets the job done without much stink.

This is the first and only mesh I've ever worn so I don't have a lot of data for comps. I'd have to try it to be sure how polypropylene would feel vs. polyester and the Byrnje mesh spacing also looks a lot larger so it might be better for breathability but maybe not for wicking. Dunno but I'd love to find out! As to the stink - my sense of smell is pretty unreliable after a lifetime of allergies, so I'm a bad person to ask! The common wisdom is that synthetics tend to hang on to bacteria (= stink) worse than other materials, so if there was a wool mesh my guess would be that it would do better.

Have you tried the elemental layer with a thin merino hoodie or synthetic hoodie?
