I'm afraid I can't agree. In the first few episodes of Series 4 she sounds forced, her voice is that of a much older person than Thatcher was at the time. Just to make sure, I listened to clips of real Thatcher of that era and to my ears, she sounded younger, with a higher pitch. Of course her voice changed over time so you can say Gillian Anderson got the older Thatcher right.

@@Grzegorz1006 Thatcher artificially lowers her voice, but generally the issue is she is rather just low that's all. When she's excited Thatcher's voice goes up screeching again, just ask any Scot when they turn off the radio.

Thatcher visited my primary school when she was PM. The parents were not told and police guarded all gates stopping the parents from picking kids up. The Order of Merit is not the only award in the personal gift of the Queen: there are also the Orders of the Garter and the Thistle (the highest civilian awards in England and Scotland respectively). The problem is she did some insanely massive damage to the working class. She destroyed their prospects and left most in squalor in the north. A lot of movies about her paint her in a kinder light and if you really read up on the demonisation of the working class, you'll be really shocked the lengths of her cruelty. They had the gall to protest her wanting to shut their only work in regions and she silenced them. It was awful. People literally celebrated her death... that's how awful she was. I'm sure she faced misogyny but she herself was deeply rooted in ultra conservatism and bigotry so I wouldn't be shocked if the sexism issue wasn't that big of a deal for her.

The community charge was unpopular, but it was not the reason why she resigned. Her entire cabinet was behind trying to make the community charge work, but they did not agree with her on Europe. In Geoffrey Howe’s resignation speech, he did not mention the community charge. It is also worth mentioning that Thatcher’s “No, no, no” was about Europe, not the community charge.

Margaret Thatcher was an extraordinary woman... the nickname "Iron Lady" fits her perfectly. Unfortunately, The Crown fell short to portray her 11 years in power, there was so much material that she could be on the show for 2 seasons, imagine Gillian Anderson playing some of her battles on the parliament, or some Falkland war scenes... I missed that on the show, it was too little and too fast... almost like the producers were in a hurry to finish. Well... at least Gillian Anderson was perfect as Thatcher, she did a GREAT job and I love The Crown.

"She became an authoritarian leader" according to her inner circle. After a decade in power ,she felt that no one could challenge her and no one could get in her way. The Poll tax that she was very like to impose came into heavy criticism and objection from her own cabinet and within the Conservative Party. Despite all of that, she is unyielding , she did not listened to the advise and opinion of those around her and wants to go ahead with that anti poor legislation . Finally, ambitious men in her party saw this opportunity and took it for granted. While she was in Paris, France a leadership challenge came in. Again, she's overly confident and did not rally her party members for support. Politics is about switching sides. You can expect them to be loyal at you but not all the time.

That was a massive issue because it disproportionately and negatively affected the poorer parts of society. Say for example, everyone gets taxed 25% of their income. To someone who earns a 100k a year, they would be left with 75k which is plenty of money to pay for bills, spend and still have enough to save for the future. On the other hand, someone who earns say around 15k a year (the average lower income bracket in the UK now), would result be left with 11.25k. When factoring in the raw costs of daily expenses, you'd find that that leftover amount is ludicrously low for living expenses in a year. This means that, the poor would not be able to save any money up for the future and would be reliant on the hourly wages of their (probably low-income) work in order to survive. In times of economic hardship (of which there were plenty of during Thatcher's premiership and even before and after her reign), many workers would be laid off so the ones who physically weren't able to save up for such harsh times would literally be left starving or on the streets. From that, you can see how harmful poll tax was on the most vulnerable sections of society. To contrast this poll tax system (a type of tax called regressive tax - a tax which places the burden on the poor), there are progressive taxes - taxes which places the burden on the richer citizens. With progressive taxes, the poorer sections of society will have to pay less taxes than their richer counterparts on the basis that a.) the raw taxes paid by the poor will be significantly less even if the percentages were the same and b.) less taxes for the poor will actually give them a chance to climb up the ladder (in terms of finances).
@MehWhatever99
@MehWhatever99 3 жыл бұрын
@@kng2159 umm, that’s not how the poll tax worked. That’s just a flat tax. The poll tax was a fixed amount, no matter your income. So say it was determined everyone household in your area had to pay $500. For some that might be a night out with friends. For others an entire month’s rent.
@alechsander
@alechsander 3 жыл бұрын
@@kng2159 wrong example. Income tax is progressive and even more so. First 12k are tax free, then most people get taxed at 20%, those that earn twice gets taxed....4 times, 40% on twice the amount (on the marginal). The poll tax was about fairness and self-reliance. The poll tax was only for the services that the Council provide to each individual. Poor people litter as much as the rich (I have very strong personal evidence of the opposite: those that are at home dossing all day, collecting benefits leave their cans of beer in the street), so they have to pay for that specific cost, the same. It's the same as the TV licence, like it or not

Margaret Thatcher was amazing! While leftists hated her, she is still popular among most of the people who were alive during that time. She was the British version of Ronald Reagan. While liberals in America still spew hatred against President Reagan, he is still one of the most popular presidents in American history. He won in 1980 by winning 47 out of 50 states. He won reelection in 1984 by winning 49 out of 50 states (and he only lost his opponents home state of Minnesota by about 2,000 votes).

@@lyndawilliams8434 Thatcher came to office in early 1979 on a Tory Conservative sea change because Old Labour's previous PM, had allowed a precarious wages and incomes policy that the all-important allies, TUC, never liked but tolerated it for almost 4 years because of rampant inflation, unemployment levels, Britain's perceived second and third rate economic/military status among its European and US allies. Everyone remembers UK's "Swinging Sixties" for art, music, and consumerism, but tend to forget UK stock market almost crashed in mid-60s, pound got devalued, British industrial infrastructure, plants, mills, heavy industries got older and more antiquated compared to newer, more dynamic EU economies of France and West Germany. By the early-mid 1970s, the economic situation had worsened with widespread TUC strikes, labor militancy, the three-day work week, large piles of garbage and trash remained stinking of main city centres in many British cities and towns as garbagemen went on strike. Old Labour, increasingly found it harder and harder to control or negotiate with newer, younger, militant, less reasonable TUC members than the ones Atlee and Wilson had dealt with generation before. Then there was the 1978-79 "Winter of Discontent"--a series of widespread labor and industrial strikes in almost every or part of every major sector of British economy at a time when UK was experiencing its worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. I'd compare the 1978-1979 "Winter of Discontent" and Old Labour inability to stop or manage it and its probably the worst single incident of labour unrest in modern British history since 1926 General Strike when Ramsey McDonald became Labour's first PM. "Winter of Discontent" left bitter memories and made deep, powerful scars on many individual British voters all across the political spectrum, even modern Labourites and Thatcher exploited that resentment and the perception of Labour as too idealogically rigid, old fashioned, and its affiliated organizations like Militant as dangerous far-left idealogues who would wreck the economy and nation again if elected again. Plus, the worldwide economic boom of the 1980s made her neo-liberal economic policies appear to be successful and Britain's military/defense standing had risen too, due to retaking the Falklands after Argentinian military junta tried to distract disaffected citizens from a police state surge called the "Dirty War" by assuming the role of anti-imperialists reconquering islands they'd long considered theirs since 1833 and had been (and still are) hotly disputed issue between Argentina and UK.

I can remember on my 18th birthday I got a card through my door - it was a community charge 1989 demand for £444. I had just left school. Give us your money was the message (not that I had any). Welcome to being an adult. A few years later this was changed to the council tax. It increases every year. What gov and MP's do not understand is that the gov give a tax free personal allowance of £12,500 in the UK currently yet even if you earnt just £7,000 your local council expect you to still to pay the full council tax (25% discount if you live alone). Your council tax yearly bill will more than likely be well over £1000 and even if you work just part time your council tax demand is likely to be greater than your total deductions from your wage. It is actually cheaper to rent a flat in some Eastern European countries than what you have to pay in UK council tax here. They will not remove council tax as its too beneficial for council directors who are just private companies funded by gov. Some families and single persons are really struggling to pay their council tax demand but the help from your local council is zero - no matter which party is in control.
