Benefits and risk of an angiogram. Arteries are muscles not a pipe. The inside lining of the arterial wall is all skin it is called the endothelium.
The best time to do an angiogram is when you have acute coronary syndrome or unstable angina.
There are many trials to show that doing an angiogram on a preventative basis may not be necessary and it then becomes important to treat the artery as a muscle vs stenting / bypassing stable coronary artery disease.
Angiogram are nice to see a plumbing problem but this is a 2 dimensional result vs understanding the composition and vulnerability of a plaque rupture.

I'm ischemic and I have WPW w/ severe symptoms of sinus tachycardia, chest pains just to name a few. Since my stress test came back positive my Cardiologist recommends an angiogram. I really dont know what the pros and cons would be.

My father is diagnosed of coronary artery blood clot and enlargement of right side of his heart. He has still chest pain and couldn’t eat well cause feeling pain on his chest even the doctor gave him meta blocker, TRimetazidine, clopidogrel, statin. They diagnosed him thru 2D e ko , ecg. My questions: Is my father still need angiogram to defect well ? 2.if yes, which angiogram is best, ct angiogram not invasive or coronary angiogram? 3. Are there side effect or risks of taking angiogram? Please I want to know your opinion. Thank you

I am scheduled for an angiogram this week, and I have some concerns regarding the risks. I’m 81 relatively healthy for my age and pretty active. I have LBBB and an irregular heartbeat and a lot of PVCs and by Jimi. I came through a Lexi scan with flying colors. I don’t mind getting the angiogram, but I am concerned about some of the potential side effects, specifically those of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke! Am I being overly concerned about the risks?

Not just important to have these if you're having a heart attack, also if you're going into open heart surgery in the very near future like I am. I guess they have to make sure there are no blockages and things are a-okay before they crack the chest open. ❤️💪

Thank you for your comment. Angiograms can be done virtually like a CT that should be good enough as a conventional angiogram is very invasive and the mitral valve with be disturbed even further

But if you go to the hospital when having a heart attack might be too late by then. I might be having a heart attack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean when I am on boat fishing. So what then will you do for preventative measure?

Had a very icky angiogram last week. Started off with a radial insertion, after around 10 minutes I had a radial spasm so the doctor paused that part of the procedure and did an emergency femoral insertion. Upon completion, the angioseal (collagen plug) failed and I lost around a pint of blood. This caused me to have a period of unconsciousness (vasovagal syncope) due to my blood pressure dropping. Now a week later, my right leg has developed a very large haematoma and I am in a lot of pain upon movement and bowel movement. Awful procedure if complications arise.

Mathew . . Stay away from them! Leave well enough alone. Watch that blood clot in your leg . . As long as it takes, do everything you can to get rid of it. You may work up to a stationary bike for a few minutes every morning. Good luck to you. Sending many prayers . . God be with you 🙏

I had an angiogram 2 days ago, and I wasn't having a heart attack. Prior to that, I have had 3 cardio ct scans, and 2 cardio ultra sounds. They did mine because I have been having chest pain off and on for 3 years, and my cholesterol has been high for about a year and a half. My results were negative, same results as my ct scans and ultra sounds. The doctor used the word beautiful to describe my arteries. I still have chest pain, left side only, mostly in my lower ribs but, when I walk it radiates up into my upper chest. It sometimes feels like pressure and feels like it's affecting my breathing but, my O2sat is 99%.

All my previous ct scans showed my heart normal except left ventricular hypertrophy. Everything else showed normal including my ejection fraction. Besides high cholesterol for a year and a half, all my vital signs are good. Every time I went to the e/r with chest pain, my ekg, labs, and x-rays were normal. What was I supposed to do. I had almost every known symptom of heart attack except cold sweating.

@Heart Fit Clinic Would those other problems reflect in ekg, ultra sound, and nuclear medicine ct scans? I've had 2 Carioca ultra sounds, 3 stress test, 1 treadmill test, and 2 nuclear stress test,, and countless ekgs, over the past 3 years, and most recently the cardio angiogram. Either that or I have extreme costochondritis.

Please go get an angiogram! I had this done in April 2024. I'm not yet 50 years old and thought I might be too young still. I told my cardiologist about my family history, and he INSISTED that I get it done. In short, he saved my life! I died three times while he threaded the scope. I was ambulanced from the heart clinic to the neighboring hospital, where I died again. They performed chest compressions and electric paddles all four times. I ended up with a broken sternum, fractured ribs, a bruised lung, two pseudo aneurysms, damaged heart muscle, and I nearly bit off my tongue. Oh and one stent. The chief Cardiologist finished the angiogram in the heart cath lab. I was in ICU for a week. I was more blocked than the stress test indicated. In truth, I was mere weeks away from a massive cadiac event, which probably would have ended my life. There is so little time allowed to get a heart beating again that I wouldn't have made it to a hospital. I am forever grateful for listening and going for the angiogram. I am forever grateful to the cardiologists and their teams. I'm the mother of young children. It's difficult to know how close I really was to losing this life. You may not need intervention. But if you do and don't know it yet, like I didn't know, then you are in exactly the right place for help. Peace and love to you. ❤ This was a lot of detail. I just felt led to share. It was my family history that led to me going.
