WHY heart stents FAIL?

My dr 👨‍⚕️ that put my stints in said that I was good to go and if I had any other issues it would be something else. But I walked into the ER two years later and died at the window they called code blue on me. It was one of the stints that had turned and caused a blockage. They reopened it and sent me to KU med in KC. Where they did a 4x bypass on me. Now a year later I’m doing okay but it has taken the wind out of my sails a bit at 71 years old. I thank the Lord every morning for the start of a new day. 😀

I also had a quad bypass 1 yr ago at 66yrs old which also took the wind out of my sails too. I was in general decent health maybe 8-10 max overweight at times with 150 cholesterol & slightly high Bp both under control with meds but had 1 heart attack& 2 stents installed prior to the episode where I went in for s 3rd stent due to symptoms I was having only to be quickly removed from the or telling me when they went into to install the 3rd stent my arteries were so bad I needed a quad bypass asap which was a shocker for sure!. I was slso dealing with my 91 yr old mom’s issues at the same time I had the quad bypass which shortly after that turned into helping her through the pain & anguish of her pancreatic cancer Diag with 2 months to live which I helped her thru with hospice until dhe passed a couple months ago. But all the time effort & stress helping her go thru that along with watching her quickly fade away & die with me by her side tile he last breathe along with the stress involved with wake & burial not yo mention now dealing with her 91 yrs if stuff & her house has had me eating a horrible diet ever since I had the quad bypass because I didn’t have the energy shop,cook & eat properly for myself after I was going all that for mom on a daily basis esp after her cancer Diag. Do I hope I haven’t font too much damage to my heart & vascular system in this past yr+ eating terribly,

The main reason for stent failure is what caused the need for the procedure in the first place.Having your internal plumbing done and going back to fast food is no going to work. After having had three stents done, I changed my diet et reduced my weight to a normal BMI. Having been diagnosed as pre diabetic, I decreased my caloric intake, using also daily intermittent fasting, zero sugar and near zero carbs. Ten years later still prediabetic but almost normal range, perfect weight plus daily physical activities. The cardiologist did his homework. Did you do yours?

@@N3dita No, thank you for asking. I had a second hear attack a year ago. One stent was partially blocked, the last remaining unstented coronary was clotted. I got another stent, I am now back on anti clotting med. I never fell off the wagon, but the disease progresses no matter what I do. There is a genetic factor involved here plus the diet of course.

@@N3dita 100%. I stopped the blood thinners a year after my first two stents. Big mistake. I though the diet would be enough. You will clot no matter what you eat if you have diabetes.

I’m 74 and will be starting Cardio Rehab tomorrow, making diet changes even though I was vegan for 7 years I need to cut back on saturated fat and I’m eating fish and eggs now too. Cannot wait to get into an exercise routine because I finally realized even though my weight is 120 lbs. and people think I look 15 years younger that I could’ve had a major heart attack any minute! Very helpful information. My 32-year-old cousin had a near fatal heart attack, had a stent put in the wrist. He does not smoke, drink or do drugs. We are trying to get info on how he needs to follow a different way of life. He eats out occasionally, but still think that is his only mistake, eating food that isn't healthy. He is not overweight at all. He works 2 jobs and was very healthy until this happened. Stress is almost as deleterious as sugar, refined carbs and seed oils. It was a decades long stress that has caused my Angina pectoris and the doctor’s statement that I needed a bypass surgery. He didn’t want to give me stents, I suppose his words indicated that I would need too many stents. Now I’m taking nattokinase, arginine, Co-Enzym Q10, a beta blocker, aspirin and some other supplements, avoid carbs and stress, and go to a gym to work out, swim and use the sauna twice a week. Now and then I fast. I hope that this strategy will prevent a heart attack or stroke.

Thankyou very much for the very good and easy to understand information Dr. I've had a major H.A. and had 2 stents done. One required the drilling procedure. I am feeling very well after over a year+ and take a lot of meds. Was pretty fit before and never thought I'd be having an event like I did. Cholesterol and hardening of the arteries got me.......Exercise a lot and try my best to keep fit. I was a jogger for years and years and turned to brisk walking as I aged. I walked miles not long before my "widowmaker" as I did as much as possible right until that event! I Changed my diet to eliminate the bad stuff and eat healthier. Lost some weight but gained back some and am much stronger again...... 75 years old.....I'm very appreciative for my cardiologist and the cath labs and modern meds that saved my life!!

Don't take Satin drugs like Lipitor. I was allergic to Ramipril and could have died had I not stopped. I haven't take those drugs for 7 Years now. I take Nutraceuticals now and 81 aspirin

Don't know how I'm here. I've had 5 heart attacks. And now 6 stints in my heart meds for life. I'm just now taking it so very seriously. Trying hard to reverse the damage and habits. Not easy. Eating everything good, stopping smoking, water ,green tea, almond milk are my only drinks. Had to learn all the foods along with olive oil, turmeric, cloves. I hope to live awhile longer. Also prayer I'll say has absolutely helped, light exercise also very good. I hope I've learned, I also hope I'm learning to calm myself. Zero more stress for me. Can't take any more. I had a stent put in my LAD one month ago, via a catheter through right wrist / radial artery. I had severe pain in my right arm for 2 weeks after the procedure. Was in and out of hospital to get imaging and tests, all were negative for clots or bleeding. My cardiologist said it’s rare for a patient to have such pain after the procedure but that the catheter can disturb the area along the pathway it takes. Despite all that, I’m still glad I did it and grateful. I don’t think I’d be here without it.

Mine was installed through the groin in the right femoral artery. Unfortunately, the seal failed and it bled into my leg creating a large hematoma that made my leg black and blue and painful for 6 weeks. Luckily, I was still in the hospital, and the nurses came running. The head nurse asked if she could have them all there to witness it because it was rare, so they all took turns putting their hands in my crotch to feel the warm, wet, spurting sensation. Then she looked at me and said, "I'm not gonna lie, this is gonna hurt... a lot." and put her full weight on my thigh to stop the bleeding. It took 10-20 minutes of pain but it worked.

My dad got his first stent a couple weeks ago and it was an emergency one because one of the arteries had a bad blockage. He got his second one today, which was scheduled. He hasn't had a heart attack yet so I guess I can say the stents were put in the nick of time. Apparently, he has three blockages but only two of them required stents. He's had higher levels of cholesterol for years from what I know. I just hope his don't fail, he is only 50.

I had two stents implanted in my main artery in 2010. Both failed by 2017. Fortunately my body made its own by pass using another artery. Rare but it happens. This was a miracle IMO.

I suffered a Cath Dissection in 2011 that resulted in an emergent Double By-Pass, that could have been a triple. Not a good day, there were other complications. Fast forward to 2022 and I started developing Angina and conducted another Cath that was unsuccessful and resulted in a Heart Failure Diagnosis. I was personally referred to Dr. Jaffer's Team at Mass General and conducted 2 CTO/PCI procedures for a total of 8 stents. Dr. Jaffer was able to re-open the occlusion that was not resolved during the 2011 By-Pass. I have since gone 65% Vegan with 25% based on low-fat Greek Yogurt, a sprinkle of low fat Feta on a salad and a little milk in my coffee. No red meat. More fish. More beans. 4 miles in 35 minutes on the elliptical 4 days a week.

I wonder if that's what happened to my mom. She went in for an elective, non-emergent angioplasty a few weeks ago and never came home... although her ashes may arrive today. Unfortunately, the hospital that she started at doesn't do bypass surgeries, and by the time they airlifted her to another hospital her heart had developed a septum rupture and her health was too degraded for her to survive any surgeries.

I had a stent at the RCA on 8/25/24. This video was extremely informative and helpful. My cardiologist had to use the “roto-rooter” as my artery was 95% blocked. At no time did I feel pain or pressure. Only discomfort. My Troponin levels were at 500 and climbing. This video is extremely helpful and the presenter very engaging. Thank you 🙏

A year ago went in for catherization because I had real high calcium numbers. However they found very little atherosclerosis so no stents were installed. I've always had low LDL and total cholesterol numbers and I'm talking really low around 130/35 respectively and this is uncontrolled (no meds). I'm 81yo and unlikely to pass from anything cardiovascular related. Cardio does not understand why the high calcium numbers but it happens however I still have a lipid panel workup annually due to ageing out here.

Please be careful! Be sure to have someone with you when you get home. I have a long history of coronary artery disease, with an emergency triple bypass in 1998. Over the years I had 3 more stents added. Because of increased debilitating angina for over a year, this past February I had a dobutamine stress test - the cardiologist was present and said it was normal. I was sent home, and about 30 minutes after arriving home I had a heart attack. Subsequent angiogram showed multiple blockages, 1 collapsed bypass graph and 1 blocked stent. Angioplasty with 3 new stents over 3 hour procedure. Stress test doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story. I wish you all the best ! I’m just one person - I’m sure most patients do well after stress tests and I am the exception to the rule.

A large cohort of heart stented ppl are highly confused about differing opinions of Drs on statins, --basically pro and opposing.-- Lay patients in much confused position with this question. Some Drs opposing their use on basis that over time, statins can do more harm than good, whereas other Drs maintain stance that 'disciplined diet plan' is more beneficial in living with stented heart. Tough gig to reach definitive position on which of the forked way would be better life.

I was 42 (I’m 48 now). I had 5 stents after an MI ;although I didn’t know I had one ( stents placed: total occlusion in circumflex - so 3 there, then 1 in distal LAD and 1 in proximal RCA). I smoked a bit in my twenties, but also a gym goer, football player, half marathon runner on a couple of occasions ; so generally very fit on all markers. A combination of factors for me- stress from work I think, not sufficient rest (had young family too), genetic predisposition etc. So now- I’m back to running 5km runs and working out, don’t do competitive sport though😕. No chest pain that I was aware of before or after. The only issue I had before was I was aware I was VERY tired on occasion before. So all good really… I have changed the diet a bit, cutting down on sugar, oils and mainly pescatarian with only turkey- that’s about it. I am going to get 40 years out of these stents!

Also I expect many to be able to diagnose at home on domestic tech ; monitor calcium scores in arteries etc. I am hoping next they find a non-invasive way of monitoring inside stents. I heard there was some ‘smart stents’ being developed- so maybe that’s the next step?.

Dr Aseem Malhotra in the UK has spent years researching statins. His conclusion is an improvement of about one percent in survival. Also as a stem cell transplant patient my haematologist advised that they are not wise. They were pushed on me every time like it was automatically being prescribed. I had to always say NO.

I had a couple of stents put in 4 days ago. I am 43 years old and had a stuttering heart attack similar to the one that killed my father when he was only 42. I feel fine so far but I am aware I need to make some changes to my diet. I am otherwise physically in top condition. I was working out 5 days a week in the gym and cycling etc on weekends. I have been asked to stop that activity for a month and to rest and recuperate. I am hoping these stents will last me a while. I am promising to be careful with my medication.

Vitamin K2 with Vitamin D3 should be used if it's 'Stable Angina.' If folk can afford it, try IV Infusions of PPC. These 3 'natural' substances alone should clear some of the blockages. Stents should be used as the last option. Unfortunately UK cardiologists are too eager to put in stents. I guess if everyone figured out you can actually remove blockages they'd be out of business.

Although I agree with you about trying to undo the blockages with K2 (nattokinaise) and probiotics, from what I have read it may not get rid of all blockages but definately helps. Exercise and diet also plays a part as well. When it comes to diet it is what is good for the individual. But disagree about the Doctors being too keen to Stent, they do want their patients to live, and for most people life changes are hard. So they Stent and medicate. They are so overwhelmed with heart patients, they would be happy if people changed their lifestyle and avoided going to hospital.

But K2 also partially converts go K1 which is needed for blood clotting. People who are stented Re usually on blood thinners. So my big question is, if K2 is a good or bad idea when freshly stented and on bloodthinners? 😓

I just got 2 stents put in about 12 hours ago and here I'm watching this video while recovering in the ICU 🙃 I was asymptomatic but my Healthcare team picked up a positive signal during my stress test (as part of my annual health screening) and further investigations revealed occluded arteries warranting PCI. The nurses said I got lucky as my risk of experiencing a cardiac event would have increased significantly if nothing was done. I think so too...I've just turned 41, has lived a reasonably healthy lifestyle thus far (watched my diet, run regularly, doesn't drink or smoke), and yet life has thrown me this curveball. I had stints put in and did NOT need them! My cholesterol was low, I was manipulated into believing I was going to have a heart attack!! I never spoke to the doctor! I heard him teaching a resident say pull, no rip there! I was under sedation woke up and began kicking!! Doctor yelled stop kicking I am in a sensitive area, yes my heart ❤️. After surgery I asked to speak to Dr, never saw him. I made 3 Apts he never showed up. I took blood thinner for a yr then stopped it was making me sick. I look 10 yrs older, I have liver disease that was stable. Why do these drs just take a body and destroy them? I am in chronic pain with my back everything hurts. I have to b my own doctor. A nurse told me he didn’t need to do them it was to teach the resident. Now I have an arm I can’t use tendinitis that is so painful. I think the drug alluding stint raised the new complications with my liver. What an awful man.

Thank you for giving me a better understanding ... I am a fit and active 60 year old guy and have just been told i have a 15mm lenghth of non clacified plaque in the mid to left main stem causing up to 50% stenosis. The CT FFR onLAD is significant at 0.7 But strange as i dont get pain unless i really do excert myself. I am a runner and somtimes i get pain and sometimes not. But now not running as much . I went for an agiogram to confirm this last wednesday . i was concerned about the risk factors and the Dr showed me the FFR image and explained to me more. Because i do not have much in the way of angina and do my routine day to day ativities i thought this outweigh the rick factor. The Dr said i can go away and have a little think about it and i will go back to see him in 3 months or before if things get worse. I have been doing a lot of research since wednesday and found you also to be a great help .as well as the Dr I am Under . He has given me medications like the ones you have mentiond too. My blood pressure and cholesteral blood test are all normal before being given my medication, so a little confused about that as well .. hope i made the right decision.

Once again Peter, thank you so much for this informative video. Under advice from my GP I have lost about 16 kg in body weight over the past 12 months with greatly improved results in BP, Cholesterol/Triglycerides, and general fitness levels. I was wondering if I should ask my GP if it may have been appropriate to reduce/stop some of my meds, (Clopidogrel 75mg, Perindopril 10mg, Simvastatin 40mg). This video explained perfectly why I should remain on these meds and not bother my GP unless I notice a deficit in general health, so far I'm feeling great.

I decided a coupla years ago to have cardio control any meds over the PCP (relating to cardiovascular). You may wanna suggest that as cardio are generally a bit more fussy regarding that lipid panel. Anyhow don't try to play "doctor".

Why would a stent collapse and migrate 3 days later? I would really like to know. The hospital and heart doc are refusing to discuss any of what happened. The hospital told me “go get an attorney”. I believe that they caused some kind of damage to my artery, that they over inflated my artery, or placed a stent that was too small. The hospital has never provided any of my current health care providers with the Cath procedure video or any other diagnostic imagery after numerous requests. There is something truly rotten about all of this. If this was an accident or negligence it’s now malpractice that they are trying to hide what happened. The hospital never billed me or my insurance a dime for my 4 day stay in their hospital. The billing just poof mysteriously never happened. If you have any advice please let me know.

You made it simple but covering it all. As a stent is placed to open up the artery (or even when a drill is used to break the "calcium" & debris) the plaque still remain on the arteries wall. My question is there a chemical reaction between the plaque itself & the arteries wall that would cause inflammation, or any other form of arterial wall deterioration (although the blood is flowing as expected) in the arteries ?

The veins are usually damaged before calcium start to stick to a certain areas of your veins. Sugar is like sandpaper to the veins & then deposits start to form..So, a good diet & exercise can help especially not smoking which has tar.. There are people who are exceptions to the rule but it's better to eat healthy, no procesd foods or sugar.

I was diagnosed with a widow maker in 2016 at 85% blockage. The doctors wanted to put in a stent but I decided against it due to several factors. My mother died 2 months after getting a stent put in. I also had ITP for a long time until my splenectomy, but I tend to still bleed with a baby aspirin. I read up on everything and decided to try a fat free diet, or mostly vegan diet and started taking vitamin k27 along with vitamin b1. After 2 months, I was able to walk more than a block without stopping and walk up inclines. It's been about 5 years now, and really slacked off on the diet, which is slowly starting to affect me. So it's back on fat free, no oil again in hopes to reverse my badness once again. My bp has always been high, since 30's when I went on Atkins diet but became worse at 50's to around 200 over 110 or more without bp meds. Basic atenolol has helped to keep me alive, adding other meds off and on, but I get so many bad side effects I just can't take them full time.

Congratulations for having the courage to refuse the stent. Good luck, also I hope you do not take statins. They are not efficient to prevent any kind of heart disease even if you have high cholesterol. A Fench cardiologistr Dr Michel De Lorgeril wrote wonderful books, (probably translated into English) asking people to not take statins. A healthy diet, not smoking, a bit of exercice every day, are good protection.

I got chest and jaw pain when I was pushed out of the cath lab after a stent. I was still drowsy and didn't think much of it as the pain went away. Now I'm thinking I had some artery damage maybe. Still didn't get any symptoms after though

Excellent, informative, understandable information! I humbly suggest one factor that was not included in the area of patient factors. That is simply that if one is not aware of dietary factors in maintaining adequate cholesterol levels, then the meds will be somewhat limited in their ability to keep those levels in balance.

If you are not genetically predisposed in varying degrees of course to high cholesterol and you take statins, niacin, zetia, omega you can eat whatever you want and not worry. Diet in the absence of genetic predisposition accounts for less than 15% of your cholesterol. I eat whatever I want. I take my meds religiously and my cholesterol averages 120 and my LDL's are lower than my HDL's AND I have a family history on one side (dad) of early cad. On the other hand if you have for example Homozygous genetic predisposition you can eat a diet of lettuce and broccoli and spinach and your cholesterol will still be 300 and you will have an MI. Forget diet. Take your meds and monitor your cholesterol and eat what you want as long as your not cursed with genes from both parents. LOL

Don't worry about cholesterol. Do a research for Dr Michel de Lorgeril, a French cardiologist who says cholesterol is actually good for you. Do not take statins please.

I my case I have an issue with calcium which is worse than cholesterol because you cannot use stents AND there is no medication to reduce calcium in the bloodstream. I endured a triple bypass at age 68 which should keep me healthy for 15 years or so.

Excellent question, most stents are capable of expanding well beyond their particular size, depending on the material and design used. However, if a stent is overly expanded, this can create issues both within the artery (e.g. causing a micro tear such as a dissection) and also can induce some damage to the stent itself. They do have a role, particularly with new devices used to manage valve condition like aortic stenosis. Sorry to pop your bubble. Cholesterol is NOT the cause of arteriole sclerosis. Sugar is! Sugar is an irritation to the lining of the blood vessel and comes in many forms and products. It is difficult to stay away from it. I am 80 years old. I had my first stent in 2001. I had my second in 2015. I then got smart. Sugar was greatly reduced. I eat a Keto diet (a low carb diet). I drink Apple Cider Vinegar very often. My cardiologist is amazed at how well my heart looks and operates. My tubes are clear. I see him once a year for a stress test. Statins do not help a patient. And a widow maker it was, he passed away suddenly 2 days after having the procedure. He was 54 years old.

Stent-artery size mismatch happened to me. When I was 40 I presented with angina and I had two blockages, 90% and 99% in my LAD, close to each other and the doctor used one long stent (30 mm) to open both. He even noted that this saved everyone money with that choice. Unfortunately it was too narrow at 2.5 mm. About 6.5 years later I spontaneously developed an in-stent thrombosis that led to heart attack that led to cardiac arrest. Luckily the EMTs were onsite and rushed me to the ambulance where they had a LUCAS. They had to do CPR for 40 minutes. After being stablized in a hypothermic coma and flown to a trauma center, they aspirated the clot and wrote the previous stent was "remarkably underexpanded" and installed a larger stent inside it (28 mm x 4 mm). By some miracle I'm still here with barely any long-term brain damage. Unfortunately, my mother wasn't so lucky. I'm not sure what happened, except she went in for an elective cardiac angioplasty (non-emergent) and never came home. Well, her ashes may arrive today.

How do you fix a stent that was too small? You can't remove it unless you do open heart surgery. If you insert a bigger stent into the smaller stent and expand it, aren't you breaking up the smaller stent?

I had double bypass heart surgery. The right artery they replaced ended up collapsing. They had to put two stents in the collapsed artery. Are my chances high that I will need open heart surgery again for that artery?

My question is not found on KZbin. Why is my doctor telling me that I have FOUR LAD blockages (40%, 50%, 80%, 90%), but the smallest stent is too big to put them in the affected arteries. Now, with nothing else to do for me they put me on Rosuvastatin, Lopressor & Imdur ER. I've read that blockages can not just disappear, even with medicine... So, why does it seem my doc has given up? Are there no other options?

Going by what I have been reading maybe you should consider yourself very lucky for not having been stented. Continue investigating, there are drugs that can take care of the blockages. Stents don't seem to be an easy solution ; you still need to be on drugs. Good luck.

Since last Friday, I have added many supplements and vitamins for my daily use. I take 1 Tbsp of melted ghee mixed with 1/2 tsp. fresh squeezed lemon juice and drink it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning & nnothing else by mouth for at least 20 minutes after.. Not only does my skin already look better, but this mixture is said to unclog my arteries. Other things I started taking last Friday: Vitamin K2 (MK-7) with D3. I take this at the same time I take my Calcium, Magnesium & Zinc, as well as Vitamin E (Tocotrienols). Also Ultra CoQ10, Antarctic Krill Oil (Axtazanthan), Aged Garlic Extract, Evening Primrose Oil, and Vitamin C (Complex). I have an appt. for my Arterial Cardiac Score in mid-April. Fingers crossed that things improve substantially by then. Again. Thanks for responding... and I apologize for this being so long.

Thank you for your feedback! We will have a video coming up to talk about heart bypass surgery as in many cases when there is significant disease affecting the left main artery, surgery is an option. Although stents can technically be done (and we do this for select patients), the decision is made with the patient and the heart team consisting of the cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon .

Like you i had 3 stents fitted but in my case just over 3 weeks ago. It's very early days i know but already i feel surprisingly well. I have been out walking every day (as per the guidelines) and have had no issues whatsoever. Previous to the stents there would be times when i would have out of breath issues but luckily never any pain to speak of, more annoying than anything. In my case i never had an actual heart attack thankfully, it was always the breathing issues which was diagnosed as angina. So yes early days Shaun but hopefully now upwards and upwards. Onlu issue i have is giving up chicken goat lamb. Or beef i eat beef once a week before this so now maybe once a month. More vegetables. Ohh eat Blueberrys that good for the heart. I must admit i found the whole experience pretty traumatic if I'm honest as i heard of one or two horror stories where things didn't go as planned when they were having their angioplasty procedure but hey i needn't have worried i was in really good hands, the doctors and nurses that dealt with me that day were fantastic. I'm still out walking every single day and my have things changed. When i had the angina i would quite often get out of breath. Since i had the 3 stents fitted I've not been out of breath once so hey ho onwards and upwards. Early days i know but so far so good. Best of luck with your recovery, i wish you all the best. 👍

What is the procedure for a 90% stenosis on the LCA but complicated by an aneurism? Would you recommend a stent or is medication sufficient? Note: RCA with 99% stenosis recently received 2 overlapping stents. Not a candidate for bypass I am told because of unrelated medical issues.

Great question; a recent study just came out and was presented at the American College of Cardiology; this showed no immediate benefits post-heart attack but a definite improvement in patients suffering from 'heart failure' symptoms. I will work on a video on this topic.

I just had stent number 7. Best sedation ever, I remember everything for once. Versed and fentanyl. They put a 3 mm inside a 3.5 mm stent in my LAD just to not have to do a bypass. I thought "great" at the time but now I'm wondering if that was a good idea. The 3.5 mm plugged up in 2yrs almost to the day. I just wonder how long a smaller stent will stay open. My first non heat attack stent and the doctor was great and everyone was nice. The first 6 were kind of a blur and a whirlwind so I don't remember a lot. I had 2 in 2013 then one 2 days later when the knew I would live then 3 in 2022. This one was a redo of the widow maker from 2022 that plugged.
