my current exhaust is a single piece , the downpipe is welded to the silencer , could i fit an aftermarket silencer , is it a case of cutting off the old silencer with a hacksaw ?

Why not use automotive glass pack mufflers they would definitely make a nice sound, stainless steel options are common these days so you should be able to make it look okay. I love your hardware store options this might be a really good one.

Enigma McC I agree it depends what fuel intake system you have, carbs you need to rejet and tune the carb, with an injection you need to remap the ecu. You also need to change the air intake to to an after market filter to get better flow. A change in back pressure from the pipe change also affects the behavior of the engine. Basically you have to change most of you system if you want to change the exhaust and keep your bike healthy, running lean or rich can cause hot spots either by lack of lubrication from fuel, or to much fuel creating an excess burn. (Back firing, and flame spitting sounds cool but it means you vehicle needs tuning and is out of balance.) It also changes fuel economy.

Since there is very little power gain unless you do the full system which is really expensive, I just drilled holes in the upper and lower exhaust holes of my 2012 BMW K1600GT. Zero expense, and a nicely louder and lower tone. I really need to do a video of that. All the rest of my K1600 videos are on my site, like the ball joint replacement I just did. what do you mean? a slip on is safe as long as you keep the catalytic converter.
