What about job stability? Is it possible and common to stay in a single GP job for years (10-20 years), or is there a very high turnover of professionals in these jobs? What about telemedicine jobs in the GP area? Are common? In Brazil, it is possible to specialize in other areas after training for GP, such as cardiology, endocrinology, depending on the training time that the doctor does. Is this possible in the uk? Hugs from Brazil
@lavnya70

In the UK GP is a separate specialty. It is not related to cardiology, endocrinology etc. If you want to pursue the higher medical specialties like cardiology, endocrinology - it will be better to do internal medicine training rather than GP.

Hi, MRCP is an exam of entering the medical specialties- respiratory, cardiology, dermatology etc. GP has its own training programme and specialist exam - MRCGP. If you are an experianced doctor and have already worked as a GP, you can apply to join the GP specialist register via the CEGPR route. You should be able to find more information here www.rcgp.org.uk/training-exams/discover-general-practice/qualifying-as-a-gp-in-the-nhs/certificate-of-eligibility-for-gp-registration-cegpr.aspx Otherwise, you will need to complete the 3 year GP training programme to work in the UK as a qualified GP.

@@eclecticism1019 There are a number of ways to become a registered GP. One way is to complete the 3 year GP training programme (during the 3 years you will have to complete the MRCGP exam). All doctors in GP training have to complete the MRCGP. The other way- for qualified GP overseas, you can enter the GP specialist register via the CEGPR route as mentioned above. Although MRCP is good qualification to have, it is a purely medical exam. It has nothing to do with GP training or working as a GP.

@@lavnya70 thank you! It really is nice to know that GPs in the UK are given great importance. Sad to say that in most countries where healthcare is predominantly privatized, people look up to specialists over generalists, especially in terms of salary. Would you say that NHS-exclusive, non-private practicing GPs generally are more financially secure early on in their careers since they have only 3 years training before achieving consultant status, whereas NHS exclusive surgeons or cardiologists take 10 years to do so?
@lavnya70
@lavnya70 4 жыл бұрын
@@josemariaandaya1996 Yes, it is a lot different here. GP is a respected specialty. The starting salary for GPs after 3 years of training is around £55K/year. The starting salary for consultants after 7 years of training is £70K/year. So it really varies.

As far as I know, graduates from Greece (6 years med school) are eligible to apply directly for an FY2 job.Is it ok to skip FY1, considering that I know nothing about NHS at the time and the language is still a challenge for me. I aim to be an endocrinologist and people keep saying that UK is not a good option(extended duration, competitive program etc) What do you think? Thanks in advance, wish all the best xx

Hi, I have only worked in UK so I can't advise on whether it is a good option to work here compared to other countries. If you have completed internship, you can skip FY1. After FY2 (1 year), you can apply for internal medicine training (IMT) (3 years), after IMT, apply for higher specialty training in endocirne (4 years). What are the avenues a UK trained GP could explore outside the UK? In my country GP s are not specifically trained and all the non trainee doctors do GP practice as a source of extra income. Do i have to write plab and do a dermatology pg eqivalent in the uk. Is there an exam (for eg mrcp..) which may give me a direct route to work as a specialist dr(dermatologist) in uk.? @lavnya70 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Neetha, there are a number of routes to work in the UK as a dermatologist. In order to be registered with GMC, you will need to complete PLAB or MRCP. Once you have got your GMC registration and have a few years work experiance here, you might be able to apply for specialist registration via the CESR route. This link should give you more information- www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/registration-applications/specialty-specific-guidance-for-cesr-and-cegpr. See the pdf for Dermatology. Alternatively if you do not wish to do the CESR route. You could apply for specialty training in dermatology. You will need to complete the MRCP for this.

@@uebu Hi, you do not need to do MRCP. You could do PLAB, then work here for 6-12 months as a trust grade doctor so you can get experiance in UK, complete the competencies necessary for GP training application, and get references. Then you can apply for GP training. You do not need to do 2 years of foundation again, just make sure that you have completed all the competencies equaivalent to a doctor doing the foundation programme. You can easily do this while working as a trust grade doctor. Alternatively, if you are already a GP in another country- you could apply to join the Uk GP register via the Certificate of eligibility for GP registration (CEGPR) The process by which doctors who have not trained in an approved GP training programme can demonstrate their knowledge, skills and experience are equivalent to that of the CCT curriculum in order to join the GP Register. Hope this helps.
