Lavender is an exceptional herb. A number of years ago I suffered for weeks with a burning and swollen tongue and gums. I was referred from specialist to specialist and they eventually, after thousands and thousands of Rands (I live in South Africa) gave up and told me that there was nothing that could be done. I'd used lavender on a suppurating sore on my dog and, in desperation, tipped the lavender essential oil bottle on to my tongue and dabbed my whole tongue and gums. It tasted disgusting but, wonder of wonder, within hours, what doctors couldn't cure, was cured. I'm never without lavender and lavender oil now. 😁

I love Lavender and one of the regular uses for me is making a tea, cooling it down and using as a bug spray. Usually mosquitoes eat me alive but they do not come near me with Lavender spray. I also spray it lightly on my bedsheets and pillows early in evening as it also helps with those night time flying pests AND relaxes you and makes you sleep better, double whammy. ON hot summer days, spraying int on also helps cool my skin apart from keeping bugs away. I am in remission, recovering from Cancer, so am interested to hear it helps with that as well. I live near a creek and in hottest part of summer we always get a flea infestation (I have no dogs or cats) and since my Lavender bushes has grown bigger, I have not had that either. I have a Rosemary bush next to the 3 Lavenders, so suspect they are all working together

Lavender is amazing at stopping nosebleeds. My daughter at very young age started getting nose bleeds... just out of the blue. The doctor said her capillaries in her nose are close to the surface and to just pinch off to stop. But this often took 15-20 minutes to end. Then in church she had a heavy bleed I carried out because she started to cry. A visitor who happened to be a nurse followed us out to help. She told us to get lavender oil and just put a drop or 2 on your finger gently rub it on the outside of the nose... not the inside. She had some and we tried it and in less than a minute it stopped!! Today she gets them less frequently...mostly at season changes. She/I always have it on hand for the unexpected nosebleed.

O wow, that is good to know! When I was 9 I had a nose bleed that last 45 minutes. It was insane. I felt fine but it just would not stop. It has started in Ballet class and then after mom took me home, it just kept going and going. So weird. Then in my second pregnancy I would get nose bleeds constantly. One time it happened at a funeral service and I was so embarrassed because it would not stop. Ugh!

I agree with you about the lavender leaves being medicinal. I feel that many herbs are well-known for the use of one specific part, while other parts are as, or near as medicinal. I realize this isn't always the case as some herb parts are not medicinal or are even dangerous...or, as in the case of mullein, the root, leaves, and flowers are all useful for different ailments. I drink a tea blend from HomeGrown Herbalist for sleep, which contains a lot of lavender. While I absolutely detest the smell and flavor of lavender, I LOVE the results, so I use it like medicine~~not as a fun food. lol Great info~~God bless!

@@Traci.Patterson No I wouldn't used it on dogs ears,or cats. But I have used it with lemon grass and lavender and peppermint oil in a spray bottle for fleas and flies and mosquitoes for when my dogs are outside mostly in the summer months. If your dog has infection in the ears you have to change their food. My dog went through that for a couple years before I realized it was the food. The first ingredient of a dog's food has to be some kind of meat chicken or lamb it's the gluten in the dog foods and the byproducts of meat that cause the problem. I noticed a difference in my dog's ears within about 10 days by changing their food. But when you change your dog's food you have to give him half new food half old food for the first week because otherwise they could develop a running stool.

Any tips on growing lavender from seed? I have a terrible time doing that.😭
@RainCountryHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be tricky and even though most of my plants were purchased as starts, I have done it successfully. I start then in small pots indoors in late winter/early spring then move them out to the green house when it is warm enough out there or you can leave them inside until it is warm enough to set the pot outside. They can be pretty slow growing, at least they are here, in the first year. Then once they get at least 6" in height you can transplant in the ground or simply move to a bigger pot for a time. Eventually they still will do best in the ground but also do not like too much water
@RainCountryHomestead3 жыл бұрын
I forgot to add that I start with several seeds because germination rates are low on lavender.
@trishthehomesteader98733 жыл бұрын
I was curious about that too. Lavender is one of the few seeds I know of that requires light to germinate. I think I would start the seeds inside and mist them until they sprout. The variety you choose might depend on your growing zone.
@RainCountryHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Yep, as noted in above comments (we were likely commenting at the same time! haha!) , they are best started inside and even then germination rate can be low so always start with several seeds
@jdp6ofus3 жыл бұрын
I can't remember for sure as it's been a few years since I've done this, but I think lavender is one of the seeds that, after you mist the seeds on top of the soil, you lay clear plastic wrap over it, lightly touching it. Leave the plastic on until you see the seeds have germinated, then raise it to the top of the seed container for a few more days, creating a humidity dome, before taking it off. I think stevia and rosemary were the other herbs I did that with to get seeds to germinate. If you have an established plant, you can propagate it by bending over the stems to touch the soil, using a piece of wire bent in a u shape to hold the stem in place and then lightly burying the stems where they touch. When the stem is then rooted, cut it off from the main plant and plant where you want it. Don't forget to pull the wire out.

Which kind of lavender do you use, I was looking on line at seed companies, only to discover there are many different kinds of lavender

I grow a few different varieties but I recommend English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

How would we use it for hair? My lavender is finally thriving, along with my rosemary. If i jist make a tea, i suspect it wouldnt keep for very long. Tincture? Im not sure what to do first.

Infuse in oil for a leave in treatment or make a vinegar for a conditioning hair wash: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joKVgGCmqZZ4jNU

Unfortunately Lavender gives me migraines, the scent that is. So rather reluctant to try in other ways. Before I found out that it was one of the things that triggered my migraines I liked it.

If you have only used in the form of scented candles and such, yes, those give many people headaches because it is a synthetic perfume being used, not the real thing. I could never handle synthetic floral smells, they gave me headaches and made me feel ill but the real thing actually eases headaches

@@RainCountryHomestead Mainly in soap and a lavender stick that my Grandmother used to relieve my migraines with only made me sicker . Lavender and scent not the only triggers, I have less migraines now, had them since I was about 10 and I'm 61 now. For some people it may help but for me it doesn't, I have wished it did as at one point I bought a whole lot of Lavender buds to make sachets for my drawers and give as gifts. I have tried over the years to reintroduce it all with the same result. Nettle tea I enjoy even made a hair rinse.

Lavender Scones: 2 c flour 1 Tbsp baking powder 2 Tbsp butter 1/4 c sugar 2 tsp fresh lavender OR 1 tsp dried lavender florets 2/3 c milk, extra for glazing Preheat oven to 425*. Grease and flour baking sheet. Sift dry ingredients and place in mixing bowl. Combine butter into dry ingredients and cut in until fine crumb mixture is formed. Stir in lavender, sugar, and enough milk until dough is sticky. Turn onto floured surface. Shape dough into 12 biscuits (scones). Place shaped dough onto prepared baking sheets. Brush dough with milk and sprinkle with lavender on top. Bake 10-12 minutes. Makes 12.

I double the recipe to make a standard biscuit size. I use a drinking glass or biscuit cutter to cut the scones or you can take a circle and cut 'pie' wedges and place separately to bake. They are wonderful served with clotted cream, whipped cream, or cool whip in a pinch and jam. My favorite jam is harvest pumpkin, lemon curd, or apricot pineapple...

@RainCountryHomestead3 жыл бұрын
If you live in a very wet area like we do, you need to make sure you are growing t hem in an area that stays more protected from rain while still getting plenty of sun or at least grow in very loose soil.

Can herbs be effective if gathered after the first frost?
@RainCountryHomestead3 жыл бұрын
It would really depend on the herb. Some not so much but others, like calendula, yes
