Steve Lukather makes MAGIC happen every time he's in the studio (or onstage!), and Toto's HIT "Rosanna" is a perfect example of how! Here recently on KZbin, I found Luke's isolated guitar track, and I was stunned by how many cool ideas he hid in the mix! A lot of times it's simple stuff, but it all adds up to make something great than its individual parts. In this video, we are gonna take a look at the tones, techniques, riffs, licks, and solo that make this song so awesome, and see what we can learn from it!
Playing my EBMM Luke III into the Bad Cat Jet Black. Using the UA OX and Logic plugins for studio magic.
What Lukather tune deserves a deep dive next? Tell your Uncle Ben Eller in the comments!

Oh I’ve seen Luke live with Toto, and in that setting he sure as hell ain’t low-key, he absolutely ignites a fretboard. But his body of studio work shows how much discipline and restraint he has, never overpowering or overplaying on studio sessions for the sake of “wanking”, and always playing to serve the song. Hence my comment of him being low-key, but no less a killer when it comes to guitar playing. He often doesen’t get as much fanboy attention as a lot of flashy players do, but I’d take Lukather over Malmsteen every time.

It's amazing how many little ''hidden details'' you can find here, not to mention if you analyze the other instrumental parts like drums, bass etc. And this was a mainstream top-40 pop-rock song that was meant to be played on the radio and for people to dance to it, not some progressive rock for music nerds or something. ....and now compare this with any contemporary top-40 song. Dude, I'm starting to sound like Rick Beato here....

While you're at it: Don't forget to read his book 'The Gospel according to Luke'! Awesome stuff! He's also such a great storyteller! With that said. Great video about a great tune. Outside the guitar world, such an underrated player. If you talk to somebody who doesn't play guitar, and you tell him: "I like Steve Lukather". "Steve, who?" is the normal response you get. If you say "I like Slash", "Oh yeah, Slash is great"

Nice, I stay away from power chords because that was alot of what i learned first 40yrs ago BUT they do have there place. in my early 20s i heard people say "Toto is just studio Musicians" (that's a lie) like it meant something of a lesser player. But Studio guys are the Pinnacle of music. Only the best can be hired for studio. Dyads are COOL, learn to use them with distortion. i love disscovering new riffs with those!

You might try a Roland Dimension D plug in for that chorused sound (probably on button 1). It's generally a LOT subtler than a chorus "effect" and doesn't mess with your pitch. You can get the same effect live from a Boss Dimension C pedal, which is great for running a stereo rig.

Great video, thanks Ben! I’d love to hear some analysis of “Fall into Velvet” from Steve Lukather’s first solo album “Lukather” (1989). Steve Stevens and Jan Hammer trade solos with Lukather on the long outro. They are hard panned I don’t know which channel is Lukather and which is Stevens. I can tell Hammer is in the centre but among left and right I don’t which guitarist is which. They are both so quintessentially 80s! Can you tell them apart? I tried googling with no luck. If I had to guess I would say Lukather is on the left.
