Bengaluru Man Hasn't Paid Water Bill In 22 Years. Why That's A Good Thing

The family of a senior scientist in Bengaluru has not paid their water bill for 22 years. Reason: AR Shivakumar is doing without a water connection, using treated rainwater not just for bathing and washing, but also for drinking. The senior scientist at Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology had designed his green home more than two decades ago - building in a water harvesting system that yields more than 400 litres of water daily. Which means the expected scanty rainfall this year - when the state is facing is second consecutive year of drought - will be enough for their needs.

Government should consider making at least some of his methods of water harvesting mandatory. This will go a long way in curtailing the mindless exploitation of ground water in states like Tamilnadu (in some places, bore wells are sunk up to 1200 feet).

I'm leaving 1.5 hours south Sydney, in a unit, and every night, I can hear my neighbors upstairs filling the bath . Unfortunately, the most of the city people, don't take any care at all about the water consumption. I have been leaving in NW of Spain, (half an hour of Coruña ) a very raining area, and I have been harvesting roof water for whet my orchard. Probably I was the only one who did it in that area. In the arid areas of Australia, probably dont have fog for harvesting water from the air, but always can reuse the water from the whasing machine and from the kitchen , and try to use dry toilets, or bio gas digesters. And what about whet the plants with double plastic bottle destilation sistems, or waterbox cocon , or terracota pots (plugin them ) buried and fill with water and cober with terracota plates. When I had hens, always clean the dirty oil from my frypans, with flower ,not water, and feed the hens with it. I did plant hundreds of trees in Coruña. We need to plant Millions of trees in Australia, with slow watering sistems. Regards.

Simple,,super, and amazing. This man is a shining example in a world over over use, false shortages, price inflation, materialis, consumerism, and famine he has done just a few things to remove one part of his family dependence on government ran programs turning solely to what he is given for free from our planet. Your own property has the same square footage and acreage outdoors and could certainly be retrofitted to collect your own water. Even if you don't go as far as to drink it but to use it for the toilet and clothes and dishes you could save on both power and water costs. Good for him and anyone he inspires to make any positive change in their life.

It's the problem of both states buddy. They don't plan on water conservation methods because they actually need effort. But fighting and pointing fingers is easy. Also they will get easy votes also. In Bangalore too water is being diverred from other rivers which are actually meant for other districts. We have to start working towards being self sufficient, otherwise there's no solution to our water woes.

A very good step taken by this man.small individual steps can lead to macro changes. here people waste water and then the government has to make dams etc to cater the water storage ,and those projects are worth billions of dollars. the figures by him are way more then needs of an household so even excess water can be stored from rain, as he said 40 by 60 ft area can accumulate 230000 litres of water ,, this is alotttt, in rainy areas it is a blessing

Respect for this man. I have rainwater recharge in my home. So I don't store the water but all the rain water and kitchen water is put back into the ground. Unfortunately in my colony there are only 5-6 houses who do this. Rest put their water in storm water drains, this year we are facing acute water shortage as water level has gone down to 500ft. Rain water recharge only works if substantial people are doing it. I have to rethink and move to rain water storage now. Although that means redoing the pipelines again.
