Nice video .I see the things your pointing out and you are correct, most roofers haven't ever read a shingle wrapper, the nrca has great resources. The biggest problem I see is hi nail or shingle placed on top another shingle .

Thanks for the informative video. I understand that all the defects pointed out are very important to note. However if you had to chose the most dangerous one which one would it be?
@BenGromicko

Hi, Charlie. I don't think there are "dangerous" defects on this roof installation at the InterNACHI House of Horrors. A major defect is one that is condition of a system or component that renders it non-working, non-performing, non-functioning or unsafe, and requires a professional contractor to further evaluate and repair, correct or replace.

@@BenGromicko Thanks Ben for reverting back. So if I understood correctly there are no major defects in this video?
@BenGromicko
@BenGromicko 6 жыл бұрын
@@charlieelkhoury4482 Oh, there are many defects identified in that video, but none are "dangerous" to a person. They are defects that should be repaired by a contractor.

OK understood! If I am buying a home would you recommend i get a home inspector & roofer or wait for the home inspector's recommendation first? From what I understood home inspectors are only responsible for the condition of the home at the moment of the visit whereas roofers would provide information on potential future defects & roof life expectancy. As a person looking to buy a home I am not interested in buying a home that's good for the day but would need replacement in 3 months. I would really appreciate your feedback on that.

@@charlieelkhoury4482 Good question. It's more affordable and efficient to hire a home inspector, instead of hiring contractors (who may have a bias toward their observations). Home inspectors have a Code of Ethics that helps ensure that they act as neutral 3rd parties serving only their clients. In relation to your second point, home inspectors are not responsible for the condition of the home at any moment. They are required to report upon defects that they both observe and deemed to be material (really bad conditions) according to the Standards of Practice at www.nachi.org/sop. I would recommend asking your home inspector about the system's condition, guess on the age, and report upon evidence of defects or conditions that may lead to a defect developing in the future. Ben, what should I do if I find my new roof replacement job has some as your describing. I have paid half down and owe the other half soon. I know its wrong but have no backing to argue with and expert, the city inspector can only so far with min requirements. I'm just sick and feel suckered...

Forget H clips. H clips means your sheathing isn't what it should be. Upgrade the plywood sheathing. Use real plywood that is made with exterior glue. Go thicker if you have to. It will be worth it.

The interesting thing about home inspections is that the inspection doesn't "pass" or "fail" the house as a whole. Home inspectors simply report the observed conditions of the house. And the inspection report may include recommendations to repair or upgrade.

I think its funny how the guy pretends like he doesnt know what is going on when it was obviously done by one of their employees maybe even him. And the part when they demonstrate that the damage was caused by a hammer and not hail

Hi, Aaron. You caught me. I actually helped build the House of Horrors, and I know where all of the defects are. Kenton Shepard and my brother Nick built the House and did all of the work. So, in the video, I tried to make it natural that I was surprised by the defects that were installed on purpose. Sorry about that. I hope you enjoyed the video anyways. Please consider visiting the House of Horrors if you're ever in the neighborhood at www.nachi.org/house-of-horrors

@Javier: The stuff he pointed out are some pretty obvious flaws. If you're defending crappy work like this, you're probably a crappy worker that bangs through his jobs and leaves the homeowner with a leaky roof.
