In our 20 years of marriage, my wife has always and still commented on Toyota having the best engines out there, Toyota's reputation is based on the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Other carmakers haven't stood still in the last 30 to 40 years, also the Toyota engines known for quality have almost all been phased out in place of smaller turbocharged engines that do not hold the same durability of the old naturally aspirated engines.

After 2 lengthy test drives in a base LC, I have reached the conclusion that for an entry price of $60k Toyota should be ashamed by offering such a cheap poorly built/equipped piece crap... the LC Is a $45k vehicle with a $15k name plate... Poor interior quality, sub par tech, a buzzy unrefined power train, floaty ride, anemic engine performance and a battery pack placement that is a pure afterthought... the days of Toyota reliability , quality and longevity are over... welcome to the new Toy-Yugo....

I don’t think Toyota is being cheap regarding the hallow sound. It using lighter materials for weight savings. We have a 1991 truck and a 2002 Tacoma that I drive on a regular basis. The difference is the materials used….the 2002 has way more plastic and not built as solid as the 1991. Both have the V6 and get about 15MPG. The 1991 will only go 75mph and the 2002 will go much faster😊. Rented a 2024 and it has even more plastic, faster and gets better MPH. Trade off is it for sure feels “less solid” compared to my vehicles. The reality for all manufacturers is modern cars are no longer “overbuilt” to last.

So maybe you can compare the First Edition Lc250 to the base model Grenadier Trialmaster, but I couldn’t afford $80k for either, so I went with the 1958 knowing I could lift it (2” spacers) add better rock rails (Greenlane), better roof rack (upTOP Kilo) better size and offset wheels (Icon Rebound 17”) and bigger tires , and all the Baja Designs from my previous `16 JKUR . The Toyota’s 8speed is way better than the 5 speed in the jeep- I replaced 2 valve bodies under warranty and decided to bail on it after 44k. This is my first Toyota ever and I’m loving most of it. Some of my minor complaints is the tank size, but there’s usually a gas station somewhere! And surprisingly the wheelbase is shorter than the Jeep, although the length is the same including the spare outside the jeep. I went with 33’s so the spare would fit in the factory location. But damn, it hangs low! It tows so much better than my Jeep as well, I can pass people now.

Can you keep an ear and feel out for this when you look at the 2025 4Runner? It is one of the reasons we are leaning toward sticking with prior gen GX and 4Runner. General sentiment is more plastic and less sense of build quality on the 2025 but looking forward to your review and thoughts. Until then we will keep happily plugging away with the prior gen comforts. (Saw you cover this concern in the middle of the video - this is one of your best comparison videos to date. Thanks for the brutally honest content, it is lacking out there on KZbin! Keep up the great work.)

I owned a 1995 Land Cruiser and it was a great rig that when I sold it to my brother it had $300,000 miles on it and he put another 150,000 miles on it to trade in on a new FJ. I'm concerned that the new hybrid engines will be a pain to work on and not iron clad like their previous engines. I had ONE turbo engine before and it did not hold up. The tranny failed before 100,000 miles and I won't buy another turbo.

First: i personally do not agree with the unpainted plastic parts on the outside: If they did it right, the plastic parts are that colour through and through, and so scratches and impacts from small rocks from the tyres are not causing paint chips or dots of a different colour. And then....As a european some of your remarks and some of the comments here in the comment section make me chuckle... When you describe the drivetrain as "abbrasive", or the interior and doors as cheap feeling: You guys did not get the previous 150 as far as i know. Here in europe the previous 150 was sold as "the Land Cruiser". We did not get the 200 or 300 Series LC. And said 150 had a 4cyl 2.8L Diesel for a long time now. And while it has adequate fuel economy and pulls adequatly for what it is, but it is loud, rough and shakes the whole car. (especially the gear lever. ->We got a manual one at work.) And said 2.8L Diesel 4cyl is the drivetrain we get with it's successor, the 250 here in europe. And yet with according options it (at lesat where i live) costs nearly as much as the Grenadier. (we have both engine options for the grenadier, but people usually choose the Inline 6 Diesel. More torque and more power than the 4cyl Toyota engine) In general i think most US customers do not realize that the 250 is not the successor of the 200 or 300 series LC but of the 150 (or prado as the ozzies call it). So US customers expect something different than it is, and wants to be i think.

For the extra 30 grand, the grenadier better feel better. The solid "thunk" noise comes from the butyl sound mat automakers slap on the back sides of large flat sheet metal panels. I'm pretty sure Toyota saved that for the GX to give it a more premiun sound over the cheaper LC. Youd think they'd give the first edition the Lexus touch under the surface for the extra money they charged for it. Theres a video idea for you. How to make the 250 feel more premium and record a video popoing off the door panels and layering sound deadening in the doors. Good video for revenue with all your subscribers.

Toyota has abandoned everything that made a Toyota a Toyota. They always took heat from many clueless non-enthusiast reviewers who ran reviews such as "Honda Pilot vs. 4Runner ... Which is the best for families?" The tech was never as cutting edge, but "quality" comes in many forms and many of us appreciated a level of relative simplicity, older but tried-and-true bulletproof designs, and for the most part, sensible design decisions. I don't understand the industry's obsession with these 4-cylinder turbo hybrids, that in many cases don't even get better mileage and if they do, it is usually marginal. 2 or 3 mpg is not worth it IMO for a far-less reliable powertrain that on top of everything drives worse, sounds worse, and also need 500= pounds of stupid batteries that take up cargo space 9or fuel tank space). No 4-cylinder turbo hybrid is EVER going to be as reliable as my 2021 4 Runner TRD-Pro's 1GR-FE 4.0 engine with its 5-speed transmission. There are many more moving parts, more stress on components with the turbo - even a lot more stress on drivetrain components with the torque of the electric motor. My 4R isn't fancy, but it's solid. This is my second 4Runner and my first one, even after 60,000 miles had no rattles, and the soft-tex seats still looked new, and even where there was hard plastic, it looked new as well. The door close sounds solid. The vehicle just feels solid, all around. I love the exterior looks of the LC/GX550 ... I think it's hot! I can do without the giant screen - if I'm what amounts to a big-screen TV in the space the size of a vehicle cabin, at least do something cool and innovative with it. Nope. Just the same old crap - falling back (like most companies) to just Android Auto or Car Play, both of which won't even let me run the apps I want to. Toyota seems to have hired a bunch of MBAs and joined the "Pay more for less" trend that is sweeping the industry. Let these things rot on the dealer lots.
