I went to Majorca 4 months ago and a Spanish couple told me to go home, I was in Tenerife last week a Spanish lady on a mobility scooter put her finger up at me and spat on the floor, I won't be going back to these places, I'm in Benidorm in Oct, if I'm not welcome there then Turkey will be my next holiday, that's life.

I have never encountered or heard of aggressive resentment in the Benidorm area as seen in Barcelona Mallorca and Tenerife. I live nearby and people to speak of tourism needing to be controlled, but they never take it out on individual tourists. However, as in every situation you are likely to encounter the odd hothead, like those who abused Eastern European expats in the run up to the Brexit referendum. The biggest resentment from Spanish people I encountered is of British people who have lived here for 20 years who refuse to attempt even very basic Spanish eg numbers one to ten. Life is too short and there is too much world to see to holiday in the same place year on year, so have a great time in Greece. Hope you don’t encounter any anti tourism protests there, for the anti tourism sentiment is far from being unique to Spain. It’s been going on in big tourist destinations like Rome, Amsterdam, Venice and so on for years. It’s just fashionable for the British media to single out and rubbish Spain at the moment.

I do wonder if the extreme behaviour of tourists has been more noticeable over the past couple of years, due to people not being able to travel properly for a couple of years during and following the pandemic. Once things opened up properly, tourists flooded back in and got over excited. My husband and I spend the month of November in Benidorm each year, and until now haven't had any trouble at all. But I do worry a little about us going this year, with all the news reports we've seen about the anti tourist marches. I don't know what the answer is. I know there are a certain element of 'tourists' that go to Benidorm and similar places, just to get blind drunk and make an absolute nuisance of themselves. Trust me, it's just as frustrating and embarassing to many of us Brits as it is to the Spaniards! We get them here in our towns and cities too. But when you walk along places like Calle Gerona, it's all set up to encourage that sort of behaviour. All the bars and venues offer ridiculously cheap alcohol and stay open into the early hours of the morning. And then of course there are the guys jumping out at you constantly offering you drugs. Maybe all that should be better controlled? And while I genuinely understand the locals' frustrations at both the housing situation and the disrespectful behaviour, I do wonder if they are not looking at the bigger picture here. I'm assuming tourism is one of the biggest industries in countries like Spain, the various surrounding islands and Portugal. If they lose that, many businesses will fold and subsequently lots of jobs will be lost. I would like to apologise though, for the disgusting behaviour of some of our fellow Brits. It makes me seethe to see the way they are. We always go to other countries, with the utmost respect for all that comes with that country. In fact we love Benidorm so much that we are looking to retire there in a couple of years. But we will be doing that in a way that respects everything around us and learning the language as much as we can.

Hi Ana, I wonder if that we don't have many of the same issues in the UK, as many people have in Spain - a lack of housing driving up rental prices, young families not being able to afford to leave home, a lack of anything other than minimum wage and minimal skill jobs on tip of a pandemic, plus a 20% hike in cost of living. In the UK many blame it on immigration, in Spain tourists. I went to Alicante 2 years ago, and the price of food and drink were much higher than prices in Benidorm. I guess until we get some economic growth, we may be seeing the end of a boom in travel.

I love Benidorm so much so I shall be returning in September and again in November. I shall also be returning with my wife in January. However it is very disquieting to know that there does seem to be an anti Brit feeling about some of the protests. If I ever personally get that feeling of not being wanted I shall do as others are now doing and vacation elsewhere. Yes Spain is a very popular country with the Brits but finances and the feeling of not being wanted will simply drive us to look further abroad. More and more Brits populate places like Bulgaria, Croatia, Turkey, even Romania and the like. So Spain should consider that the loss of British revenue will have a big impact on your finances. Considering the fact that it is said more than eight million Brits visit Spain. Can Spain really take the risk of alienating the British holiday maker? I am also aware that many local residents are concerned about the soring rental prices and the lack of places to rent but surely that is the fault of your local planning office for allowing so many of these properties to go on the open market for rent. Thus pricing out the locals. They should have considered the impact of this before granting permission to rent out properties to tourists. As I say I love Benidorm but I would not hesitate to holiday in an other country should I feel this anti British vibe. Yes I also understand we have our rather unseemly loud contingent of Brits that get drunk and do the Brits that have respect for Spain no favours at all with the loutish behaviour. I love your channel and thank you for keeping us abreast of what is going on in Benidorm and surrounding areas. Thank you.

A Scots point of view on the protests. .

This is a very complicated issue and simple explanations don't help. Obviously there is a problem for people being able to find affordable housing in tourist areas. Also towns with high levels of tourists struggle with dealing with the volume of people. However it is simplistic to suggest that reducing tourism will solve the problem. We have friends that live and run bars in the Balearic islands. The season lasts about five months and then they leave to go to other parts of Spain or other countries in Europe. Their staff do the same thing. So you have the situation where, during the high tourism season, you not only have the influx of tourists but also workers/ residents, which then puts pressure on public services such as health care providers. Equally I can understand that, if you rent out property, it might be tempting to do so for holiday lets for 5 months rather than to 'residents' that may only want to rent for six months. I would expect to find the same issues in the UK such as Cornwall. Physically attacking people only gives people the wrong impression. What is really needed is for people to recognise the the interconnected nature of things and develop a robust sustainable plan. For example, TV programmes in the UK constantly push Cornwall as a place to visit. One ways to reduce demand would be to cut the publicity.

The real effect of these demonstrations will be felt next year in Spain as most people in the UK start to book and pay for their holidays in the winter months for the following year. When you look at the prices quoted for Turkey Greece Egypt all are very competitive to Spain some even cheaper especially as Spain has not only increased their prices but also 😊demonstrating that we are not welcome….

Spain is not finished, far from it, it’s just grown up. It has a thriving economy and industries eg pharmaceutical industry. One of the fastest growing economies in Europe. It no longer has to rely on budget tourism, and tolerate binge tourists and their disorder, indecent exposure, public sex , toileting themselves and vomiting on the streets etc. Nor disrespecting local people and their culture. On top of this Spain has proved itself as a powerhouse in international football, something that particularly its English visitors find difficult to deal with. I am sure you will be missed, as you said, Adiós.

Spain are also up and coming with their Rugby players . Having lived in Spain for ten years before I can understand them being fed up with British tourists the drinking side of things we are a disgrace women especially ! Why should they put up with us ? The British need to remember it’s their country not ours . I have never classed Benidorm as Spain with your pie mash , English breakfast etc it’s for uncultured British that do not want to experience the true Spain lol 😂they go there for the booze , drugs and to show themselves up 😂

I wonder why a demonstration of less than a thousand people represents, in the eyes of the British press, the "hatred" of the Spanish people towards tourists. Perhaps the European Cup final has something to do with it? After all, slandering Spain every time it inflicted a defeat on you has been your policy for centuries.
