The British may have looted the Benin Bronzes from the West African Kingdom in the 19th century, but they couldn’t remove the art form.
Artisans still use the country’s red soil to create bronze sculptures, just as their ancestors did decades before.
However, it’s a dying trade. The cost of raw materials is soaring and local craftsmen are struggling to make ends meet.
In this short film, we visit a workshop where beautiful Benin bronzes are still moulded, for now at least.
It’s a stark reminder the stolen treasures which once decorated Benin’s royal palace have to be returned.

I think one pound or one dollar from each of us who see the value in the work of these artisans - artists would greatly assist in helping to financially help them and their families. I am more than happy to give the first pound. Anyone else?

I feel that the governments of places colonized should put money towards saving their traditional arts. These artisans are preserving the heritage of their ancestors and showing the world the beauty of their countries.

I hope that a new generation rises to keep this invaluable skillset alive for themselves and their progeny. It's abhorrent that the British continue to keep, display and feed off the work of African peoples and cultures to this day. The 'shocking' truth is that its not limited just to African arts, but everything African. Thanks for sharing this video

Benin must bring back the warriors who will join the "Alliance of Sahel States." 'The people there who support French neo-colonialism need to be replaced.

You share good information. However you never provide the diaspora any information on how to help or how to purchase the goods to keep the crafts and traditions alive.
