@mdaniel53843 жыл бұрын
Not just for bells. In Europe complex bronze sculptures were cast beginning with antiquity. Most of them were melted later, but some survived like the "Horses of Saint Mark", the "equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius" and several others. One of the seven Wonders of the World was a gigantic bronze sculpture known as the Collosus of Rhodes, that collapsed during an earthquake and the bronze pieces were melted in the early Middle Ages by the Arabs. Lysippos was one of the great masters on antiquity, who created about 1500 bronze masterpieces with none surviving to this day. During Renaissance, the Italians resumed producing high quality work of art in bronze, some nice examples are the Equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio, or Perseus by Cellini. The Benin bronzes, are chlid's play compared to those. In Islam, Judaism, Protestantism, Eastern Christianity and early Catholicism, sculpture of humans or animals was (is) forbidden because of one of the commandments. Not knowing that, people imagine that simple small bronze castings like the Benin of Ife ones are some extraordinary achievements.

How difficult and emotional this must be for Germany. Nigeria and Germany will now establish their connection for love of art! This is so exciting for Nigeria and Africa. Hats off to Germany for acknowledging their responsibility and accountability because the German people have suffered in life just as Africans and other cultures have. We all have been through so much as a human race - but at the same time we are able to see kindness and beauty in the world. Some of us have been used and abused, some of us have been tortured and murdered.. As a human race, we are still learning about what it is to be human.
@nigerdeltamirrortv93113 жыл бұрын
Some ignorant commentors are saying these artworks are voodoo related and shouldn't be returned. ...ignore such claims bcos these priceless, magnificent artefacts have nothing to do with voodoo. They were made by the creators to record important events at that time since there were no cameras. You can call them the photographers/media of their time who recorded events/history eg wars, birthdays of the King, Queen Mother, festivals, arrival of foreign visitors eg some of the works depict the visits of Portuguese traders/explorers to the kingdom over 600 years ago and much more. They were recorders of history. Another thing the bronze casters back then only worked for the palace or very senior Chiefs. Ordinary people could not have access to these bronze pieces so it was kind of an exclusive thing. I'm from that part of Nigeria so know a bit of the history. There's a big museum in Benin City, Edo State that has plenty of these artworks, have visited it a couple of times as a student in Benin and they are well taken care of and safe so those saying these artworks won't be safe if returned are lying. They should be returned home where they belong- in Africa!

But the thing is that people in afrika never had the opportunity to learn, research and like those art pieces. It`s about a robbery that prevented people to know and like their history. That`s why those people don`t see the meaning or even don`t rely to the importance of having their own artifacts repatriated! European people took advantage of those art pieces and made their children star like arts, culture, history, geography, and so on.. So it`s most important that people in Afrika receive their art work back!

Because there is a new generation of young people in Germany that has started to ask 'inconvenient' questions about the meaningful decolonization of institutional structures, instead of just paying lip service and engage in 'woke' culture wars. It's a long process though, and I don't think the majority of people in Germany even understand what's going on. I can already see the conservative backlash. Even returning looted cultural and spiritual artifacts to their rightful owners will be framed as 'capitulating', blabla 'caliphate' bla bla. The usual talking points you'd expect.

Cultural heritage should displayed in in its country of origin. But in Lagos they won't be viewed by the millions of tourists who visit Germany, and has a less chance to show the world the great Benin kingdom and debunk people's racism.

You know that rich people in east Asia bought European art, right? Most of non European artefacts in Europe were bought. In the past, only western Europeans appreciated the value of such objects and it wasn't complicated or illegal to gather large collections a long as you had the money and passion.

What moral or ethical authority does Europe, particularly Britain has to not hand over stolen property. That means that Nigerians need to go to European countries to see their history. Security of the pieces in Nigeria isn't the issues, being unwilling to return stolen property is.
