Benjamin Godard - Premier Chagrin Op. 149, No. 6

Benjamin Godard was a French violinist and Romantic-era composer of Jewish extradition. He studied under Henri Vieuxtemps at the Conservatoire de Paris. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "Godard's compositions are unequal, if only because his productivity was enormous. He was at his best in works of smaller dimensions. Among his more ambitious works, the Symphonie légendaire may be singled out as being one of the most distinctive."
This piece is the 6th of 10 works from his Op. 149 Études Enfantines. The melodic lines and harmonies remind me a bit of Schumann. Premier Chagrin roughly translates to "First Sorrow". Not sure if my interpretation does those feelings justice. A few years back after playing the first movement from Beethoven's Op. 110 Sonata, a man in the audience came up to me and said, "Lovely interpretation, but it felt like it was missing something. I think you need to have your heart broken!". Listening back to this rendition reminded me of that encounter. Gotta keep improving!
