I learned and hear since young about Benkei and Ushiwakamaru legendary Japanese story. This is a very beautiful version of their epical story.

Excellent story telling. How sad that a young man with such heart and talent was so betrayed and Benkio was in the end his true brother who shared the good and bad The most painful , is betrayal by blood. The deepest respect and love is sometimes, the bond of brothers of different mothers whose faith in each other is unshakable- even when facing death. I as both a woman and not Japanese, am beginning to have a glimpse of understanding the core of the Warrior’s Way and why these men thought and acted as they did. War is horrible even if it is for a good reason. Yet their lives transcended beyond the battle field to live on in hearts and minds not to be forgotten. That is powerful imagery.

A martyr holds immense power over their followers, embodying the ultimate sacrifice for a cause greater than themselves. Their willingness to endure suffering or face death becomes a powerful symbol of conviction, inspiring devotion, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose within the movement. The martyr's story serves as a rallying cry, deepening the commitment of their followers and transforming their legacy into a source of strength, resilience, and motivation for those who continue to pursue the cause. In this way, a martyr's sacrifice transcends their own life, igniting a powerful and enduring spirit among those who believe in the same ideals.

This is already engaging me, only three minutes in!!! For me, a Western viewer and admirer of this genre, I am delighted to see such a multidimensional 'Japanese stock' character. He is both tender and passionate with the woman he loves, and sweet with his daughter when seeing her for the first time.

Thank you for posting this great story. Although many liberties were taken with the 15th Century chronicle, this is a beautiful film, and in essence it remained true to the source. For more, read "Yoshitsune" and "The Tale of the Heiki", both translated by Helen Craig McCullough. The episode at Ataka has been the source of many Noh and Kabuki plays, and a famous film by Akira Kurosawa: "The Men who Tread on the Tiger's Tail".

Interesting that Ken Maatsudaira acted as Benkei again in a 2005 drama called Yoshitune. He's truly born for the role! I can't imagine anyone else being the giant monk! Oh, and the actresses playing Shizuka and Tomoe are beautiful. Are they Yoko Minamino and Akiko Hinagata? Anyone knows?
