I made this mistake last June when I started doing art. I went straight to color painting and skipped drawing and tonal painting. So I restarted and only did drawing for the past year. Starting next month im gonna do drawing (weekdays) and tonal painting (weekends). This video really helped. Thanks!

I've been watching your videos and really enjoying them, they are wonderfully done and you have some really sage advice. I watched the interviews you did, and I'm wondering if maybe in a future interview you could tell us what you did over your long career with sitters who might be unhappy with their portrait? Did that ever happen? Would you change the painting in that case?

Wow I love this teaching. I went from drawing to painting on drawing. I skip the tonal value parts.

Gosh, after seeing this I am starting to realize why as a beginner, I am having so much difficulty obtaining depth in my practice drawings(color).. Thank you for another helpful tip Ben.
@lustenhouwer4 жыл бұрын
You can do it!
@bradharper53974 жыл бұрын
@@lustenhouwer I am going to give it a try. I combined this lesson with the Tonal value lesson, and the lesson "Four Ways of Making a Portrait" lesson and came up with a nice sketch. These techniques are allowing me to see that progress is possible for a beginner. As such, I hope others are encouraged to give these things a go. In the future, to make these sketches even easier for me, I will incorporate one of other tips on how to transfer the grid using soft charcoal, which can be easily erased. Again, thanks for all the tips...

Great video thank you, I am going to have a go at this , what ratio of ochre do you use to black. I normally use the Brunei method but will have a go at this when I start my next painting. again thank you.

how many tonal values are needed in an average painting would you suppose there are? bearing in mind that you probably use less tones than a photograph includes
@lustenhouwer3 жыл бұрын
The trick in a good painting is to use not more than 5 tonal steps. Anyhow there are not more than 9 - 10. But: the less, the stronger the painting.

from tonal values to color, may be can add a step "painting with a limited palette " may be
@lustenhouwer2 жыл бұрын
Could be, but a limited palette is more difficult than a full one.
@benwuhan2 жыл бұрын
@@lustenhouwer oh really ? didn t know about this. i m just in the first step (drawing) but i could have guess having less colors on the palette is easier. interesting. thanks for you reply and I Loved ur work by the way
