Bennett Place: The Final Surrender of the Confederacy

Most people think the Civil War ended with the surrender at Appomattox. They think wrong.
The war actually continued for another two weeks until Union General William Tecumseh Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston could come to terms at Bennett Place, North Carolina.
However, in-fighting on both sides threatened the peace negotiations. An expert from James A. Garfield National Historic Site explains how the tenuous ceasefire was nearly undermined by dueling goals and the assassination of President Lincoln.

I have a contemporary "Field Copy" or secretarial copy of these final terms (signed) on April 26th 1865 found at a Goodwill in 2007 Central Texas, discovered behind a Paris Fashion Plate when the frame broke. I have had immense fun researching it. I may have even had a relative in what was the Army of Tennessee on the field that day :o Small world

*Most people think the Civil War ended with the surrender at Appomattox. They think wrong.* No one with even a passing interest in the war thinks that. When Johnston surrendered, Gen. Kirby Smith had not surrendered the Trans Mississippi, and Gen. Stand Watie continued to fight until 23rd June. Captain Waddell of the CSS Shenandoah was the final surrender 6th November 1865 in Liverpool, England.
