Great footage, and fair warning about hiding under a bridge! The vague formation at the beginning of this is identical to a tornado that just missed us when we were staying at the Kitty Knight House in Georgetown, MD. We were on the top floor looking out when I noticed corkscrew actions in the base of an approaching cloud. After a moment I shouted to my wife and son to race downstairs with me, avoiding an explanation. I knew what was coming and didn't want to add any extra fear to the facts. When we got to the ground floor the storm was going past us with a tremendous amount of wind hitting the house. Minutes later the news on TV was reporting roofs demolished.

That famous Andover, KS video is still giving people the false impression that getting up under the rafters of a bridge is a safe spot in a tornado.
@blueznjazz1239 жыл бұрын
You are quite right! And, most unfortunately, the TV video fails to show clearly that the tornado did NOT hit the bridge, but went just to the left of the bridge (from the camera's point of view). So the scenario was NOT a sign that hiding under the bridge saved their lives. Sadly, ever since, people have assumed otherwise :-(

+Paliv I'm glad you said it like that. I don't know how a tornado can be pretty. Also, I'm totally blind, so I've never seen a tornado. It just seems so odd that it would be pretty. Paradox?
@Auctorian8 жыл бұрын
+Heather stubbs If you happen to have a modular text-to-speech device, I suggest you load the silky smooth voice of Morgan Freeman for this. A paradox? In a way I guess you'd be right. For me, some of the beauty found in such a devastating event is its sheer power. For all the years mankind has existed, we can neither contain nor repel its destructive force. To this day we cannot precisely predict where one will form, its duration, or its size; we are left only with vague extrapolations from modern meteorological sciences, and perhaps even the experience of veteran storm chasers, to predict that there is a chance one will appear. Another factor of its beauty lies in how it moves- twisting and bending as it reaches for the earth; sometimes behaving as if it were a dog at the very end of its leash, straining against invisible binds until they break and it rushes forth into creation. Other times they move like a sloth, slowly forming and reaching down as if it were savouring every moment of its existence. They behave as if they were living, though they are not. While its power cannot be contested, there are times where it seems the storm itself chooses to spare a shed, a house, or a whole farm as if on a whim, despite these lying directly in its path. This factor alone stands above all others for me; how a storm, awe inspiring as it may be, can behave like a living and thinking predator one moment and the next like a lumbering giant moving across the earth, sometimes remembering to watch where it steps. Of course not everyone shares my opinion, but I do hope this at least sheds some light on where I find the beauty in such massive monsters of nature. Sorry this response is so late, but I only just stumbled across this video myself.
@heatherstub8 жыл бұрын
+Auctorian Hey there. Thank you so much for your perspective. I wish I could download his voice, but I have JAWS by Freedom Scientific which is downloaded to my computer already. I've also got Vocalizer Direct Premium, but his voice isn't included. Could you please tell me if I can still get it and from where? Finally, I figured out one thing. I love airplanes, and especially jets. They appear to fly from a distant height, so it makes sense how tornadoes can look so graceful from a distance. I've actually wanted to go on a storm chase, but I don't have the finances to do that. I'm also unable to work, because I have Trigeminal Neuralgia which is an excruciating and debilitating condition involving acute nerve pain. Just the fact that I can and have learned to live through this aweful pain and so much more throughout my life is truly something I call my blessed affliction. When I think I can't endure anymore, I know God can help me, because He took on all of our pain no matter what the cause. I wanted God to take me home for 8 and a half years, because I felt I could do no more for Him. He made it possible for me to endure it all through His grace, and He's allowed people into my life who've given me so much joy and even permission to scream, cry and sing (somehow) through and after it all. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Oh how I so wish I could travel and show and tell the world that blindness doesn't have to be the most fered condition. Since I've been blind all my life, I've learned to put things into perspective from a three dimensional "view." I'll never stop learning either, and I believe that blindness is a state of mind, and it's a characteristic of who I am. The best way I try to help the sighted world to "look" at it is by asking one question. What's the one situation you could face where you must be able to use your other four senses, because you can't and won't be able to see? Certainly, you could think it's when you're in a tornado. But even morelife threatening is the one situation where you must know everything about where you are and how to get to safety (whether alone or with others) within 90 seconds. So. Have you figured it out yet? You can't see it, but you may or may not be able to hear it. You can certainly smell it, and if it's nearby, you will feel it. And when I say you've got 90 seconds to get to safety, I mean that especially if you have a family. So. Did you guess that it's a fire?I believe that so many more people would have survived 911 if they had known how to get to the fire exits quickly and without having to wait until they received directions from anyone. Mike Hinckson and his Guide Dog Roselle made it along with all of his co-workers and others on the 78th floor of the South Tower, because he had memorized where everything, (including the stairwells which were not safe), reaching the ground floor in just under an hour. They were even so grateful to pass fire fighters who were climbing the stairwell to save others. Roselle even gave one of the fire fighters a tail wag and a little kiss before resuming their descent. There is nothing more important than memorizing the entire layout of any building you frequent by feel, especially since you need to know where every doorway, wall, floor space and what each even sounds like when you're walking. You'll want to take care especially to listen to what it sounds like if you are in a familiar room, and when you hear an opening on your left or right or even straight in front of you. Does carpeting change to tile floors or even do the tiles go from smooth to rougher tiles? Is there an echo where you are, or does one area sound very echoy, only to change to a more sticado-like sound as you pass an open door into a hallway or vise versa? Do you notice a difference in the way one room smells from another? Is there more than one way to get to the fire escape? Does the temperature change as you approach or move away from the fire? You have no time to even think about where you are. You might even have to help others to get out of the building quickly and safely. Whether it's a tornado, fire, flood or even an earthquake, you can't afford to take any time to figure out what you need to do. This is why your other four senses are so critical in situations like this. Learning to use them is somewhat like learning to use muscles you don't use very often. You simply can't wait for others to tell you what to do when time is of the essence. I sincerely hope that nobody has to find out the hard way that you have to know how to respond immediately to a life threatening situation like that, but if you do, it truly pays to put on a blindfold and sleepshades, and learn every inch of your home or place of work. Even learning your local mall if you frequently go there to walk might just save your life and the lives of others. Thanks for letting me share. Heather

The comments on this video really bother me. Calling a tornado ripping through the ground, destroying and killing everything in its path is like looking at a picture of Charles Manson during his trial and continuously calling that monster "Beautiful!! Isn't he just beautiful!!"
@jklxn10 жыл бұрын
Please do the planet a favor and stop referring to tornados as "pretty", or any other word that would make them seem "cool". Try telling the folks in Moore, or Tuscaloosa, or Cullman or any other town that has been hit by a F5/4 that, you would likely get punched. They are NOT "pretty", unless you are thinkin pretty destructive, it seems insulting to those who have lost so much

its an appreciation of mother nature bro. hes not saying the out come or the losses that occur with them are pretty. Its like calling a car pretty dude, cars are the biggest killers in the world, calling them pretty is not condoning the deaths caused by them. Chill out
@Bluenose35210 жыл бұрын
Sam Roy Thanks. Well said. Took the words right out of my mouth. Mike bettes said it well, after the Joplin tornado. We video the power and the beauty that mother nature has to offer. But sometimes with the power and beauty can also come the bad side. The devastation. And the loss of life. Same thing can be said about cars, or airplanes. All beautiful, but can be deadly as well. Still, we take risks. It's what we do. It's what comes with any line of work or hobby. And we know the risk. All to show the beauty.
@mda03710 жыл бұрын
That's the paradox...tornadoes can be both beautiful and deadly. If someone observes the beauty of a violent force of nature, how does that have an impact on what ultimately results from it? It is really a non-issue in the scheme of things.
