Lou Levy - one of the most underrated musicians ever, because he was always a perfect sideman (Sinatra, Ella, Sarah, Peggy Lee, Stan Getz, Woody Herman and now Benny G.)

This would appear to be Episode 5 of Season 3 of 'The Danny Kaye Show' on 13 Oct 1965 on which Goodman also renders his 'Hi Ya, Sophia' with Caterina Valente. The quartet is Lou Levy on piano, Colin Bailey at drums, Max Bennett on string bass and an unseen Al Hendrickson on guitar. Info per the Classic TV Archive, Golden Throats at Fandom and the LOC.

Shame that the cameraman didn’t show the guitarist.

Yeah. You couldn't help but notice how he compliments Mr. Goodman's playing. Couldn't even see the whole ensemble as one. Such disrespect and bad camera direction.

There is an unseen guitarist playing a great obligato to Benny on "Butterfly." Who might this be?

@Andrew Ongais Well, this was 23 years after Charlie died, so it's definitely not him!
@harriairaksinen56945 жыл бұрын
My guess is Herb Ellis. Drummer is Donald Bailey and Lou Levy plays piano, West Coast top pros.
@sallemjazz13 жыл бұрын
@@harriairaksinen5694, that was Colin Bailey (english-born drummer) not Donald Bailey.

@@sallemjazz1 My bad, Donald B, black drummer with, among others, Gerry Mulligan, was my favourite way back. Colin, also favourite, wrote an excellent book about bass-drum playing.

@@harriairaksinen5694 weeeeell....Drummer Donald Bailey played with The Three Sounds, Jimmy Smith and Kenny Burrell....Drummer Dave Bailey played with Gerry Mulligan, Carmen McRae...
