First 60 seconds of this are gold. You've gotta practice tuning to get good at tuning. Would have loved to hear more about Benny's approach to tuning the bass drum and toms. Future vid?

Benny was in New Zealand recently and I managed to get a tunebot readings on his snare drum and 10" tom. These are the tension-rod readings for people who use the tunebot: Sonor Benny Greb 13" Snare: Batter Side TUNEBOT reading = 360hz. Sonor Benny Greb 13" Snare: Resonant Side TUNEBOT reading = About 385-390hz. Sonor Vintage 10" tom = Batterside TUNEBOT Reading = About 300hz-310hz Sonor Vintage 10" tom = Resonant Side TUNEBOT Reading = About 375hz

It's on his DVD, he tunes the batter (emporor coated) at finger tight or just a little less tight than that. The reso( ambassador coated) half a turn tighter and than some cotton within the drum, acting a natural gate. So when the drum is hit it jumps up and you have the full sound of both heads, then it drops and the drum stops.

Benny speaks the Deliberate Practise language. It doesn’t take “years” to get good at X, it takes, in this tuning case, maybe 50 iterations with improvements close to every time. Awesome message, Benny!

The tips about practicing tuning are right on. It takes experience, lots of it. A TuneBot can help a lot on the learning curve. I've come to the conclusion that nobody can teach tuning well - I followed all sorts of guides and videos and got consistently mediocre results until I got a TuneBot and started experimenting a lot. Now I can tune well without the TB if I need to, but I still get better results with it.

I use a torque gun, TubeBot with an interval of fourths (higher on resonance side) and tweak it with a key. Note! DW has the 50 thread lug bolts which are super smooth so it’s easy to high torque when you don’t want to. Thanks for the tips Benny.

Not to take anything from Remo but the Benny Greb snare has something to do with it. I have several snare drums, (DW and two Craviottos), and picked up Benny's signature snare a few weeks ago. I tried several different Remo heads on it and can say for that snare drum the Ambassador definitely produced the best results. The combination of that drum and the Ambassador head makes it a very versatile snare more so than on any of my other snare drums.

I dig ya Benny, but we all know that was just a commercial. I don't really hate that, because 🔊 I LOVE GEAR!. 😊😄😃😍 ... That was a good point on the whole "finger tightening tuning key" thing. I don't find tuning particularly hard, but I think my least favorite thing about it is trying to tighten the rods with your fargen fingers!. I might actually buy a couple of those.
