The routine with the dancers at 5:44, where the black dress keeps switchibg around, was an act of genius on the part of the film editor.

Back in the 70`s and 80`s I watched this show every week. Cracked myself up every time haha. Benny was a true comedian. Even when he said nothing I laughed hard because of his expressions. Really miss those times.

Me too. He was born with a comically-able expression on his face. I read about his life story. He became very very wealthy, yet he lived in a tiny working class apartment, to his only pair of shoes to the repair man and wore his clothes until they literally shabbed themselves away. His father was a clown circus, and that is probably where he inherited that talent from. When the politically correct brigade took over England, they cancelled his show and he sank into a depression until he died of heart failure in his apartment.

I read he lived in an apartment in , queens gate but e relocated. Yes was humble but I believe e was a very generous man but frugal wit himself.

He really adapted his music to the times plus his voice is always on key considering he was not a professional singer, nice job Benny. And he came out with great songs actually...i really enjoyed them. Garden of love, Ernie the fastest milkman...., Funny old world, I’ll never know, Colleen, Harvest of love, Lonely Boy, etc.

Ernie was one of the cleverist songs of all time, fantastic lyrics.

His musical numbers and visual comedy are definitely his best. Most of his verbal stuff hasn't aged well. … and your right he did move with the times. This is 1986 and the 70s stockings and bras leering were very much out and he gives one of lady dancers quite a part.

I remember years ago Johnny Carson wanted him on his show and Benny never went on. I AM SO GLAD HE DIDN'T. Benny is at a different (higher) level than Johnny and says to me that I call the shots (Benny Hill speaking) and not Johnny. Love that and I know people will yell at (or something like it) me, but I always thought Johnny was over rated and it was the guests, like Rickels and Hope and that ilk put Johnny on the map. Benny Hill put himself on the map and is BRILLIANT!!! Thanks. James.
@labellaescrima19964 жыл бұрын
He did not go to any of the talk show because he was scared of not being funny enough for the americans, until his manager convinced him after Thames brought his show to the USA where it became a success. He then came to New York and did some shows , he was really surprised by the fact he was an International star. Really an humble decent man!
@thelastremainingmoderate19974 жыл бұрын
Partially right about Carson, but the reason all those guys (and gals) "put him on the map" is that he knew when to shut up. He learned from his predecessors (Jack Parr and the inventor of late night talk shows, Steve Allen) that when you have an interesting guest you just give a little nudge and a bit of guidance and let them go. Unlike today's stable of hosts who have to make all the interviews about themselves.

Destroyed by Thames Television who cancelled his still popular show for not being politically correct. He still cracks me up with laughter after all these years and he's still recognised to this day for being a comic genius all over the world. It was harmless fun and all the ladies who worked with him loved and respected him.
@leroyjenkins4811 Жыл бұрын
What a damned shame... Benny got cancelled, not because his show wasn’t still popular, he got canceled because somebody went woke and thought he wasn’t appropriate for television anymore. Taking Benny of the air like that broke his heart and took away his purpose to create and live. I think that contributed to his death. He lived to make the show. He didn’t have a wife or kids. He didn’t have any family. He lived rather modestly and spent most of his time at the studio coming up with material. His creative output pace and stamina were absolutely incredible. Week after week, he made his show, looked for new talent, collaborated with new people, launched many people’s careers. No one ever complained he didn’t treat them fairly. No on ever complained of any harassment. He just wanted to make people laugh. The executives at Thames took that away from him. I remember staying up late on Friday nights, sneaking to watch the show with my brothers, laughing our heads off! Good times. We’d never seen any thing like it. The wit, the sarcasm, the satire, the singing, the dancing, the plays on words! Benny was the complete comedic package! A true master! He took pieces from everywhere and made it his own original thing. RIP to Mr. Benny Hill and all the people who worked with you on your show. You are all missed by so many.
