I remember being really confused when I found out that whenever I had heard "billion" for the first maybe 16 years of my life it was actually representing 1000 million. I realised there was a lot less people on the planet than I thought. We learned about place values in like year 2 lol. The trend is consistent that once you reach X squared (X being the place value) you reach a new place value. But for some reason that changes with a billion and the new place value comes at a number 1000% smaller than it should be. It doesn't even make sense to me why they changed it.

The international scientific community made several agreements a while back in order to get America on board with scientific norms. Because America was the economic centre, the term billion was changed to match the American definition (since it didn't matter too much anyway since scientists use orders of magnitude more often than terms like millions and billions). In exchange, the American scientific community had to universally adopt the term aluminium rather than aluminum, and had to accept metric as the scientific standard of measurements.

Really, if you think about it, all of his stories are actually "Old man forgets what he was supposed to be telling a story about and starts rambling about his pet grievances."
