Exploring the Abandoned East Tilbury Battery

It is in Essex. But there are several abandoned forts in Chatham. The best ones abandoned places in Medway are... -The southern water nucular bunker -The upper lines (the abandoned part of fort Amherst) -Shorts Tunnels (I haven't managed to get in these yet) -Cliffe fort -Grain land fort tunnels -Grain sea fort -Mathews equestrian center (this one isn't a fort but is still worth a look) I have put details about these places on my website. Used to muck about here as a kid, some 40 years ago. Lot more left of it back then. No trees or under growth at all.

This place is amazing. The network of tunnels is unreal. When I went there it took a while battling through all the brambles to find tunnel entrances and luckily it's not been vandalised too much. It is privately own so do ask for permission before going here. It is dangerous so the owner will need to know your there.

Beno yeh, it looked like you went down some? I went up onto where the gun turrets are n found a little square hole, climbed down a makeshift ladder. There's tunnels under all the turret fixings.

Beno rumour has it that there's a tunnel joining the battery to main coalhouse but I searched for hours to find it but couldn't.

The late 19th century battery took over from the threesome of Coalhouse, Shornemead and Cliffe Forts as the main defence for London on the Thames. Housing 6" guns on Montcrieffe "disappearing" mounts they had the range to fire down to the entrance to the Thames and engage hostile ships far sooner than the earlier forts.
