Fascinating to see this, thanks very much. There has been many deaths caused by lifts in Egypt due to abrupt stops, falls down shafts, misaligned carriages as well as the usual poor maintenance, tampering, overloading and Egyptian cursed land from disturbed tombs. Man, those are finger nails are crying out for a Spanish guitar! Keep it up Beno.

you are really very brave to go on these elevators, they seem to be really dangerous

Thanks for the great video of the old lifts still in use in Egypt, there will be a lot of them all over Egypt, the hotels in the cities will all have brand new lifts fitted now but old run down apartment buildings and some old buildings in markets will have really old ones

The stepping onto a ledge at 5.25, combined with the background sounds was like a long-lost level of Quake.

These are the type of lift where if you safety break it when going up it will accelerate and crash into the top of the shaft! The brakes are probably original from the 1960s lol.
@AawsomeguyАй бұрын
That is definitely some really old elevator equipment. Although it was probably state of the art in it's day.
@AdolfZachrissonАй бұрын
Its cool that back in the day they used relays instead of a "computer" thats controlls the whole thing.

Nice of that person to let you ride the second lift though. Such people are rare. Just wondering Ben, on your trips, how do you deal with communicating with the locals, especially in countries outside Europe?

I’ve been to Egypt and these are very scary in my opinion.

So does that mean you can't call the lift if the last person using it left the interior doors open, or does that safety only work when there is a load in the cab?
@benoliftsАй бұрын
Lifts in the 1920s had a pressure sensor in the car so that the lift can run with the inner doors open if nobody was inside, but a lot of countries banned this as it is considered unsafe. Nowadays most lifts need to have the inner doors shut to operate.

Those look seriously old and dodgy. On the first one it seems to have modern circuit breakers. Really odd how there is a gap between each floor. All the buildings look so run down. I thought it was a bit odd that it was in French. The motor room shed is really odd. The concept of pay to use is strange.

Have you surfed in Egypt yet?
@benoliftsАй бұрын
I surfed the lift at the resort I stayed in at Sharm El Sheikh. I did not trust that lift. Egypt's safety standards are non existent. In my recent trip to Egypt I didn't surf any lifts as the old lifts did not feel safe. Too much was bypassed on them. And the posh modern lifts in the luxury hotels had too many staff about watching everyone. Because of how low wages are in Egypt, places can afford to have far more members of staff compared to Europe. A lot of places even had lift attendants in the lifts. I left too watched to surf. But I did a lot of tram surfing as it is socially acceptable in Egypt and nobody cares.

Woah! These elevators are not only scary, But also dangerous! These need replacement to make them safer

"Floors one and two haven't paid" - a joke or serious??
@benoliftsАй бұрын
That is serious. People don't have much money in Egypt, so people can save money by not paying for the lift.
@rkan2Ай бұрын
Was very common when lifts first came about. Most people in first floors didn't wanma pay for them obviously... 😅
@crocoland6330Ай бұрын
That’s serious! In many countries this occurs. I’ve seen a condition in where the whole lift was Modernized except the 1st floor because they didn’t want to pay

In Georgia (the country), many elevators are paid and people need to pay money when using them.
