Those underground markets are pretty interresting. A very novel and efficient use of space quite the contrast to the modern shopping centers. What I find interresting is that they used western built lifts from Otis and Kone in the more prestigues building even in the soviet era. That hotel at the end is good example of this, a 70’s Kone. It seems to to be well maintained but somehow I get the idea that if they needed a really good lift, a soviet brand was appearantly not an option and they opted for a western product. It seems like they spared no expense on buildings that had to impress westeners but gave their own population the worst of the worst products. The GDR had such a policy of selling “export quality” products to tourists but products for the domestic market where quite inferiour.

It is similar to north korea. The government only spends money on buildings to show off how important they are.

This writing system is called Cyrillic script. It was originally created in Bulgaria and then adopted by Ukraine. It has nothing to do with r*ssia whatsoever.

Even though you haven't shown very much of the metro i can tell you already what kind of rolling stock kiev has: 1) 81-717.5/714.5 "Numbered" series (Metrovagonmash, DC resistor, called "Numbered" because it was the 1st rolling stock to be given numbers in its series name) 2) E, Em, Ezh series (Metrovagonmash, DC resistor, look almost the same as the previous series, except older, has much more character and has a different front end) 3) 81-553.1/554.1/555.1 "Slavutich" (modification by Skoda, same DC resistor, unfortunately not operating rn) 4) 81-7021/7022 (an evolution to the "Numbered" sets, Kryukov Train Facility, same DC resistor) 5) E-KM (a modernisation to the E, Em, Ezh sets, Kryukov Train Facility, Hitachi IGBT-VVVF, kinda meh for me)
@benolifts6 жыл бұрын
Are the new ones on line 1 a modernization of the old E series? I think in my unreleased video I call them new metrovagonmash trains. Do metrovagonmash now use VF drives and AC motors. I find their trains so confusing. In my video I say that they continued to use DC motors into the 2000s, is this correct?
@AkomishTiddies6 жыл бұрын
@@benolifts if it's a light blue train with black front but with old style sides, then it's modernized E. Locals say some other company (not Hitachi) took care of interiors so they are meh. MWM actually had a number of train models produced simultaneously at some points, and often there are several modifications of each (for example, 81-740 has both MWM inverters and motors for Moscow, Hitachi motors with MWM inverters for Kazan and both from Hitachi for Sofia. Traction motors on 81-760 come from 4-5 different suppliers, but that's a different story), they use equipment that the system ordering the trains specifies. The last DC motor trains from 2000s and early 10s were mostly Moscow orders, as there was substantial fleet of 717s already, operating the same type at least within the same line reduces maintenance costs, and the newest model (740 at the time) didn't fit every line. (MWM did offer a DC PWM version of 717 before, 81-718, but Moscow refused so they were produced in a few small batches for Kharkiv) Parallel to that, new 81-720 series was being developed and it has DC PWM. Its cost was considered too high so only a few trains were produced. MWM kept experimenting. 720 received VVVF with AC motors - first it was Alstom Onix package, then MWM developed its own system. And again, nothing was built after 2 trains. Then 81-740 came and it was in serial production since 00s, along with 717s. Why? 740 had to replace an even older fleet of E/Ezh/Em508 trains. Where it couldn't (as I said, 740 isn't suitable for some lines), new 717s did it. They were also built for some other cities for a couple more years. Ironically, right after the last 717s were built, the oldest of them in Moscow began to be replaced by 760. This is a somewhat simplified explanation of what was going on, hope it clarifies something. Oh and also there was another metro train manufacturer, Wagonmash in St. Petersburg, it was making Em and its subseries, some early 717s and trains with model number starting with 5 after 81 (it's factory code, 7 means MWM, 5 is WM)
@AkomishTiddies6 жыл бұрын
MWM uses Hitachi VVVF on most newest trains (including "modernized" 717 for Budapest), the most notable exception is Moscow orders. They also run some R&D with Hitachi so probably they'll adopt some new technologies for newer trains (I heard regenerative braking till zero speed is planned for models after 81-765)
@benolifts6 жыл бұрын
Looks like I will have to redo that part of the video. There is lots of these trains on line 1 and they look like this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:%D0%95-%D0%9A%D0%9C-%D0%93%D0%B1_%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4_%D1%81%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8.jpg The funny thing is that I did a voice over saying they were modernized. Then I thought I read on a ukrainian wiki page translated into english that they were new trains, and I redid the voice over. Hopefully this time I will get it correct. Why did Metrovagonmash use DC motors in the 2000s. I do not understand why. It is like they were in their own little world and were blind to everything around them.
@AkomishTiddies6 жыл бұрын
@@benolifts yep, those are modernized E/probably also Ezh or Em. Also the end cars became trailers because AC motors are more powerful and allow less powered axles for the same amount of cars. They could switch to installing VVVF only long ago, even in 90s (had they started cooperating with Hitachi back then, we'd have awesome GTO inverters) since AC drive prototypes were built in 80s and even in 70s if I remember correctly. There was a whole E train with prototype DC PWM drive even earlier. But for some reason, systems kept ordering DC trains with resistance control. Don't see much logic behind that other than keeping the fleet more unified. This is not the wildest part, Russian Railways still order some DC trains, motivated by "simplier maintenance". There are many AC trains in production as well though

23:48 This is the system named "Shaft Security (Охрана шахты)". It blocks the lift after you open the shaft doors the lift can't move anymore. It is very annoying and to normally go in the inspection mode, the shaft security needs to be switched off in the motor room!
@Techno-Universal Жыл бұрын
7:30 These sorts of lifts would of been installed after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 so they would of actually been installed in the very early 1990s. Pretty much the Soviet Union always hated American companies like Otis when they were in power.
@rassel20005 жыл бұрын
Is it against regulations if you need a key to put a lift into inspection? In my hometown in Germany some stupid company installed a brand new lift with a keylock on top of the lift to put it into inspection mode.
@benolifts5 жыл бұрын
On some lifts (a few ThyssenKrupp's and a couple of new Schindler 3300s) don't have an inspection switch, and has to be set from the cabinet. I find that rather dangerous. I find a lot of anti surf systems dangerous as they shut down the lift, and a lot don't shut it down instantly, so the lift could have moved to a bad position before shutting down. This puts lift surfers at more risk as they could have an accident climbing the shaft. The mindset of people who think anti surf systems are a good idea disgusts me. The safest way to have a lift is for everything on the car to to work as expected, and changing the function of anything (no matter how small) puts people at risk.

It is not the Russian alphabet, it is the Cyrillic alphabet. You do not say that the English language uses the German alphabet or the Swedish language uses the Spanish alphabet, right? And you could show some more interesting places from Kyiv, not only these street markets and underground crossings but parks, bridges, architecture.
