I also turned 40 last year and it bothered me. Our generation is at a point when most stating to have health issues and most of them are overweight and the general saying is that you cannot expect much after 40 athletically. I was aimless before 40 regarding running, I was doing it for 18 years and had no goals. But decided to turn the page, got a coach and started to train hard and now I'm feeling better than ever, I am running more than ever and faster then ever. What you have achieved is amazing and really looking forward what is 2024 in store for both of us.

Well done Ben, that is a fantastic achievement for all that you have been through both physically & mentally over the past few years & thanks for sharing it with us. I'm 56 & 2 year ago I ran a 2.56hr marathon at Manchester which I was delighted with. You just never know what is round the corner & at the beginning of last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer. I'm still receiving treatment but the tumor has been removed as well as part of my bowel, I've had plastic surgery & a Stoma bag fitted. Although I haven't been given the all clear I'm feeling much better & stronger each day. My goal for this year is to get back to what I love best & that's running. Marathons are out of the question but just to be able to do a Parkrun would be a dream come true for me. We all have problems in our lives at some point but I really think that our runners mindset helps us come out the other side as a stronger person. Followed you for years Ben & find you a true inspiration..... keep up the great work & never give up 💪💪

Great insights Ben, might be able to use some of that advice…. It’s great when we find old form returning. I had a good 2023 I’d written myself off as a plodder - did the RTTS and hurt lots, but had trained really hard and loved training again. Soon after I really needed a motivation boost so joined a running club again, 15 years after last running with a club. It’s been amazing! 5k time back down to 21ish min, hopefully get my 10k back to low/mid 40’s. So I’d add join a club(!) to my best advice to anyone wanting to improve 👍👍

It's a lovely contrast to see a video that isn't about a specific event, or technique or product, but about a bigger picture, and a longer story. I didn't run my first marathon until I was 42. I'll be 58 when I run my next one, which will be my seventeenth overall and my first London, this April. My goal is to enjoy myself and savour it and take it all in. I take satisfaction not so much from PBs now, but from following the kind of joined-up training described here, so that I avoid injury and have race days that are as free from discomfort and anxiety as possible. I hope you're still documenting your running for many years to come.

Really glad to hear that age is not stopping you from still achieving amazing things! It’s really uplifting! I hope you will run a sub 2:25 someday (no pressure though). As for me, I will be over the moon just to BQ and break 3. On the other hand, that hat looks really good!

Kundos to you for this excellent video! Really well structured and informative. So much helpful information in those 18 minutes! I recently turned 40 myself and I've been using your plan for berlin last year and finally got my sub 4 (after getting close 15 years ago.) Now I train for Hamburg Marathon in the end of April and feel very motivated hoping to get another PR. Thanks for all the work you put in those videos and really happy for you to see taking down those issues that kept holding you back in running and also in life imagine. But no matter how the races will go in the future I hope you can finish all races and Training Runs with a smile on your face, because that's why we do it after all,,! 🎉🍀

My new race kit addition will be Immodium (thanks for the tip Ben!), after I finally was forced to take a bathroom break in a race for the first time ever...which cost me a BQ, but since they made the Boston 2024 cutoff 5:29mins 1 week before my race I was pretty confident a bib wasn't in the card...add in a post tropical storm, and nail was in the coffin. Keep stacking those blocks Ben!

I made the video. I could see my marathon plan review. I agree with you 100% on cooking and I’m hopeless at it but it is one of my targets for the year to cook better than boring bland dishes. I struggle when I put pressure on myself in races. When I’m relaxed and do my own thing I’m so much better even if I still going for my time. I find I put less stress on the body and roll into races than flat out from start

Hi Ben, congratulations on your great run! I have a question for you and I hope you can answer it. I had surgery on my right ankle last week. I now have a metal plate and eight screws in my right ankle. How is your ankle healing from three years ago? Does your ankle hurt from walking or running? Does the screws in your ankle bothered you? When was it you able to walk or run after your surgery and not feel pain? Did you have to do physical therapy? I would appreciate it so much if you can answer my questions. I am currently in a very depressed mood. Watching you gave me hope. Thank you for sharing your story.
