One of the few games where a shotgun has its real life effective range respected
@XPsychowaffleX2 жыл бұрын
Dude the Halo 1 shotgun is probably one of the best representations of shotgun use and shotgun spread in a video game. They've got range. Even in multi player, if you could rattle off 2 good medium range shots and got some hits on the head, it's a kill.
@LegataireS1172 жыл бұрын
I found funny how the shotgun in HCE is the go to weapon for killing flood because even in legendary a lot of weapons are super effective on them ^^ But hey, like everyone, i always pick up the shotgun for the flood
@NYG52 жыл бұрын
@@LegataireS117 well you gotta keep the shotgun for both the flood and for unga bunga rushdowns on elites. I think even 1 shot will strip gold elite shields and stagger them if you are close enough for all the pellets to hit. There's an interesting mechanic to the shotgun pellets as well because it seems the pellets behave like explosive pistol rounds and they give no penetration, compared to the AR where it passes through seeming unlimited unshielded enemies. In those occasional situations the AR is better than the shotgun for hallway sweeping grunts and flood who are stacked up on top of each other.

Very few shooters can pull off a driving challenge as its finale. A testament to just how important the Warthog was to the essence of Halo. Dated design choices aside (infinitely respawning enemies down a hallway will never not exasperate), it’s incredible how well this level holds up even after 20 years. I may struggle to tell most of Halo Infinite’s levels apart, but I will never forget each detail of difference between Pillar of Autumn and The Maw.

As mentioned in the video, while I think Halo 3's version is a lot easier to get to grips with, there's something special about The Maw's. It is tricky in places but it's so, so satisfying when you manage to get through it without ever really slowing down.

@@PetalsFourArmor I liked the overall story (despite it not being much of the story) and the gameplay was fun. The most fun since Halo 3 imo. But I never replayed it. Did 1 legendary playthrough and could tell it lacked replayability as I went through. It's a shame because they nailed the gameplay aspect. We just needed a proper story and interesting level design to back it up. If the next game keeps the core mechanics of Infinite and they manage to produce a good story and improve their level design then we could be seeing a very good Halo game in future (let's not hold our breath though).

@@NZealandthe only “good” thing about it was that you really feel like an actual Spartan due to things like sprint, boosters, and being able to bash through some of the walls within the bases. I remember playing this level for the first time when I was 8, I had just played through Two Betrayals & Keyes so I knew how terrifying the flood were & I remember my older brother telling me "Yeah every other marine is gone, Master Chief is the only one left." So I was amazed & filled with hope when I heard that Echo-419 managed to survive the flood & I was so happy we we're gonna escape with her. Then I heard the music & saw her smoking pelican, I legit started crying. This game had such an amazing story.

That ending section of the warthog run was just legendary. Halo CE just had that seriousness and grittyness that made the stakes feel overwhelming. The icing on the cake for me was the countdown timer and having your only extraction (echo-419) shot down minutes before the Autumn detonated.

The cover featured ‘Autumn’ Pillars(I guess pillar is a specific type of candle). Suddenly, that opening scene of POA just clicked for me. Fixes to the engine room I'd make: >Make the platform-to-vent arm jumps do-able without crouching >Move the hitbox a bit closer to the vent's opening so that grenades have a better chance. >Keep the vent arms retracted longer once the switch is pressed, allowing you to clear out enemies >Scatter a few (dead) rocket flood so that a long trip to the armory isn't necessary. Plenty of little hallways in this area to stick a spare rocket...or five.

So there is a big main middle section which connects the ship all together. People forget that the ship is still pretty big its just the scaling limitations the game had back in the day. Many years ago I had a rather unusual and unique experience when I played this level on legendary and it was when I was on the bridge where echo 419 was shot down by the bridge where she was meant to pick us up that the banshees turned around and made a pass back at me and this is the unusual part, they both hit me with the banshee bombs as I was driving away with my warthog that I was knocked off it and then the warthog ended up plummeting into the abyss below. I was basically left alone on the bridge with both banshees shooting at me on both sides that I had no choice but to run back into the place that I came from and then I made a rather interesting discovery. Apparently there was a hidden warthog just beneath the platform that you came from that connected to the bridge that bungie had put there just in case you and I managed to jump in it and drive all the way to the launching area where the long sword fighter was docked with just seconds to spare. I wish I could have recorded that moment because no one seems to believe me when I tell them that there’s a hidden warthog in the area where foe hammer gets shot down. It truly shows how much detail bungie put into this game when they first made it.

These days I've kinda found this level a bit tedious (yeah I know, rich coming from someone who likes The Library and Two Betrayals), but I really think it‘s the tedium of the engine room that makes it so for me, because everything else I think is fairly good for exactly the reasons you mention. I think maybe the Warthog ride at the end haven’t aged quite that gracefully for me though. I play car games from time to time, and compared to those the car sequence just isn’t that fun? That being said, I would be remiss not to mention the massive amount of nostalgia it holds for me. I remember bright as day me and my best friend at the time taking turns on driving and manning the turret trying to beat it, and the sense of elation we felt when we finally got it. Newcomer's perspective: - Chief repeatedly tossing up and catching the grenade after asking about the engine shields was absolutely hilarious. - I personally had no trouble 'nade-ing the vent cores without needing to restock or even come down from the catwalks onto the exhaust pipes, but that's just me. The trickle of a few sentinels and a couple of combat forms weren't enough to distract me from carefully lining up the throws. - As for the Warthog Run, I really dislike the extremely low traction on the warthog, and I still haven't fully gotten used to the fact that the warthog always tries to point in the same direction of the camera and that you can't go left and right without using the camera to do it. I've played through Halo CE, Halo 2, and Halo ODST so far, and I'm only now starting to get-a-hang-of the very alien control method the games employ with their human ground vehicles. I don't utterly loathe the warthog run, though; it's a fine and memorable way to cap off the game. - It is definitely disappointing that Foe Hammer was killed off after being such an important and likeable character throughout so much of the game. At least Sgt Johnson and Pvt Dustin Echoes (and Master Chief and Cortana) managed to survive the destruction of Installation 04, though. - During the part where Cortana says about making it across a gap at full speed, I died multiple times landing nose first in the warthog, and I have no idea what I did differently for that not to have happened the last time.

While it wouldn't have made so much a difference in 2, I think Foe Hammer could have been a character of note in 3 had she not met an explosive fate in this level

In the drive core sequence, it's just that angled lip on the platform that makes it frustrating. Every time you try to jump up, on a time limit of course, if you're not spot on it'll mkae you slide and not make it all the way up.

I'm generally pretty good with Halo movement, but the engine room messes me up every time. Always end up bumbling around for a bit!
@Loch_Ness_Lachster2 жыл бұрын
Personally I reckon that The Maw is a very heavily coop styled mission, for example, dense amounts of enemies, the engine cores, the warthog run itself for the gunner.

I'm 25 and it was only last year I found out about the invisible flood in the armoury after playing this game idek how many times
@calebsalyards80762 жыл бұрын
More realistic than an armor-toohclose-to-the-reactor I think would just be a nearby dead-end with a pile of munitions and...well probably not corpses since the flood doesn't really leave those, but clear signs of a last stand. You could keep the distant armory in case players *really* struggle to get the explosives planted, but now it's much less of a struggle to resupply.

Echo 419 … never saw her face or even knew her real name but still a stronger character than most in todays games

You didnt mention the alternative ending with forehammer. If you jump off the bridge and land on the pelican it takes you to a side mission.

It amazes me how much the military sounds like a military in bungies games. Infinite sounds like a bunch of college kids asked to record some lines for free booze. Everyone sounds so off now. Great analysis though, the maw is easily one of my most replayed missions of CE, other than Silent Cartographer. I can only play CE if its SPV3 now! Would highly recommend to anyone who liked CE but its been a long while. Like a dream that’s familiar but youve never had it before
@BenPlaysGames2 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! I've yet to touch on it in a video but have some stuff written in my notes about the ambient chatter in Infinite. At times, it feels really overwritten - the grunts must be super cute and whacky, the marines must only say stuff in that very over the top quippy style etc etc. Have been meaning to give SPV3 a go too, just gotta finish Cursed Halo first.
@NYG52 жыл бұрын
SPV3 has cool bonus levels but the fan made character models don't look as good as the originals.
@tyrannicswinen1172 жыл бұрын
This is the first time someone has ever said the trek to the armoury from the engine room is considered miles away when it's literally around the corner. Plus I would say Halo 3's Warthog run is slightly better than CE's because you aren't having to wrestle with the Warthogs controls at the same time as avoiding everything else
@spontanapa Жыл бұрын
If you stay for too long in the armory, Halo CE's only group of active-camo flood will attack the player.

the warthog run felt like a NASCAR or Formula One road course for me (and barely escaped it) I have just finished the game last night on easy mode. Took me two days to finish it. My strategy: BANZAI!!!

The grenades not working every time happens a lot. I’m curious if it’s a flaw of the MCC port.

While Foehammer is gone, I do think Halo 3’s main Pelican pilot, Hocus (Awesome name btw) is her spiritual successor in the Bungie trilogy, and she lived I think as well. It’s not clear what happened to her after The Covenant but I guess she rendezvoused with all other UNSC survivors on the Shadow of Intent.

In a Pelican together with a Spy,a slight crazy Marine and the Pilot. They and Masterchief with his Longsword Ship had to sneak/cold engine around after another Covenant Ship appeared, they then saved Player2 aka Linda in her Stasis Capsule and bord the Alien Ship and Cortana hacked the Systems and deactivated the Lifesupport killing all Covenant Crew Members and with the Ship they had a long trip back to Reach. Thats the short form its told in the 3rd Novel i believe.

Why not just head to the armory before going into the engine room?
@BenPlaysGames2 жыл бұрын
You definitely can do that, but I always try to look at things as much as possible from the perspective of someone playing through each level when it comes to the level design etc. A lot of issues with that kind of thing can definitely be alleviated by being proactive once you know what's going on.

I hate people saying things like "Well there are outlandish elements like aliens and Ring worlds so how outlandish can this be?" There's always a sense of Logic even in these things. It's the logic of the universe and it wouldn't make sense for a military power to keep rockets in their engine room. It's suspension of disbelief not abandonment If disbelief

i saw that someone remade the warthog run in infinite, and it doesnt matter if its a perfect replica, if the warthog doesnt hit everything and fly into the sky because of the janky physics, its not the real warthog run

I'll never forget being a child playing CE with my brother on Xbox. The original xbox controller was so huge they had to drop a smaller version called the "s." We played for days against friends, family, and other people that were supposedly "good." Every memory I have from the franchise from 2001-2009 correlates community gameplay freedom. From the game types, to armor sets, and lobbies. Every game type had Hokage level players that were having so much fun they didnt notice how skilled they were until new players joined for the first time. Having a fully functional balanced sandbox, creative space, and a lobby to talk crap was all we needed. Infinite debuted with a campaign that DIDN'T need to be open world, a multiplayer with more issues than a character from Shameless, and a predatory customization system. Let's be real, 343 were always leading with cash grabs instead of passion for their intellectual property.

Don't worry you're safe from Halo Infinite here 🙂😂

I remember using the duke controller like it was yesterday, thing was an absolute monster. In the UK, Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox by £100 quite soon after launch, so gave everyone who got it at launch two free games and an S controller to make up for it, which was pretty cool.

Unpopular Halo hot take... I've never liked the warthog runs. Same goes for the ghost and broadsword run in halo 4. Racing game simulator is not how I want to play my sci-fi space opera shooter. The story telling and atmosphere is often great on these sections but. I find the gameplay boring, jarring, unappealing, and repetitive. I love the maw right up until the awkward suspension of disbelief breaking warthog run. But I recognize I'm in the minority so, to each his own.
