Oh my God, they were speed running the first half of halo CE to get to their replacement for the flood (so you can add 343 Guilty Spark to the list) which explains why this mission always fealt so inexplicably uncanny to me. I've spent a lot of time in the CE campaign, and especially that first half. I think something about cueing familiar moments from each of those first 6 levels in such a short space of time unnerved me subconsciously in a way I don't think they were intending. Like my brain was trying to settle into familiar areas, but by the time it was comfortable and ready to go, I was already leaving

This was always my favorite mission in Halo 4, simply because it tried (with varying success) to copy the feeling of the older Halo games. The long opening section without combat, the vast landscapes and vistas, the asymmetric combat against the Covenant, a genuine sense of mystery and wonder… it felt like it was actually TRYING to be a Halo game, albeit with a new spin, and in many ways it succeeded (most of its shortcomings coming down to Halo 4’s core gameplay and overall story). Once the Prometheans got introduced, though… that’s when things started going downhill FAST.
@BenPlaysGames7 ай бұрын
You're right in that the Prometheans are the biggest problem. I really, really dislike them as an enemy and, in fairness, I've tried desperately hard to get to the point I enjoy fighting them. An exercise in futility, I think! Someone else here made the point that 343 Industries seemed to be rushing to get to them and I'm inclined to agree - another couple of Covenant centric levels before they joined the fray would have been no bad thing.
@Christian-o8t9n6 ай бұрын
I concur. The prometheans could have definitely used more buildup, maybe some foreshadowing like the flood had in 343i Guilty Spark. Just think. Shadows in distance if you pay attention. Radar detects crawlers you can't engage or see. You see flashes of teleportation far away. Then you get the sequence where a knight pounces on you. More buildup. More creepy-pasta. Reminds Player of The Flood since they were made to fight it.
@gargravarr27 ай бұрын
* After the AotCR-style bridge, you cross an open area on foot, enter a Forerunner structure, and encounter a new non-Covenant enemy. You escape them by teleporting out. * In your teleporter destination, you wade through boring hordes of the new enemy faction, in a security complex designed by the Librarian. * Another teleport sends you to a dimly lit canyon, where the Covenant appear again. The new enemy appears as well, resulting in three-way battles. You can use Ghosts and Banshees to move around, ultimately disabling three power cores before teleporting out of this place too. * After some teleport mishaps, you're wading through an undergrowth canyon, dealing with both kinds of enemies, heading towards an elevator that can lift you up to a disabled ship the new enemy faction is trying to gain control of, in an effort to reach an UNSC officer. * In a crashed UNSC ship, you use a vehicle to travel through a service corridor full of enemies.

While I agree with the criticism of the level itself, I ultimately feel like the *game* Halo 4 (mechanics, ai) is letting it down. Imagine this level in Halo 3, I think it could have worked quite well. Very interesting with the parallels to early CE levels! Thanks for making another great video as always!
@BenPlaysGames7 ай бұрын
Always a pleasure, Torb! Halo 4's AI and the constant need to switch weapons have always been my two biggest issues gameplay wise. Combat has this weird mix of repetitive fighting and fannying about trying to find guns that feels incredibly disjointed to me. It's a bit of shame, as I actually don't dislike the gunplay as much as some people do. The actual act of shooting enemies I think is quite crisp, even if the lack of recoil is perhaps overly generous. There is a third issue, I suppose, which is how badly vehicles are utilised, but I try to block that from my memory haha. The way they're used is such a massive drop in quality from Bungie's work except for perhaps the final part of Reclaimer after exiting the portal, which isn't half bad. The rest though...
@jimpraxis38787 ай бұрын
343i echoed Halo CE quite a bit in Halo 4, both in the specific level structure you've noticed here, and in the broader narrative structure of Halo 4. It reduces the Covenant back to only the CE groups - Grunt, Jackals, Elites and Hunters, it puts Chief and Cortana in isolation for much of the game, and it takes you on a journey of rising and falling hope - recovery in the first third, a semblance of success at the midpoint, then a disaster and increasing despair before a heroic ending. There's relatively similar parallels in Halo 5 to Halo 2, as well, and until Infinite I had a running joke that we'd get an Anniversary game, then 343i's imitation of the same game
@Mega-Brick6 ай бұрын
We still kind of get a 3/Infinite parallel, including the Brutes, the equipment, a fight to stop an activation, bossfights with a monitor, etc. Though what's even more interesting, imo, is the way 343's 3 games mirror the Forerunner Trilogy of novels, even despite all the course corrections. Right down to Infinite: a ring lost in space (the SAME ring, in fact) with multiple stranded factions, a buried cosmic threat, humans being tortured, a traitorous AI and their new counterpart meant to defeat them. That's almost exactly a scenario from the Forerunner novels, and the same is true for much of 4/5 too.

Just curious why you say the Hunter's are visually unappealing in H4? (11:08) This feels like an odd criticism to me cause I don't think they are really any different at all from other Halo's? I feel like this era of gaming that H4-5 released in I don't remember a single FPS PvE game where the PvE enemies were "smart." Most of the FPS PvE things I play nowadays seems just as stupid since this 2012 era to now. Granted I don't really play much PvE FPSs other than like Borderlands 2/3 and Destiny 1/2 anymore.

This franchise is in desperate need of a hard retcon back to after H3. Not because I think everything 343 have done is total garbage (except lore and story) but generally because their is no start,middle or end. They made books to expand on their games lore because their writers or whoever’s fault it was couldn’t write a cohesive story to save their life that could take place over the course of three games. The reveal of the Didact is the biggest disappointment in the entire franchise, instead of us finally over the course of three games hearing about and it being heavily implied and outright told to us in H3 that humans *are* Forerunners we get this vampiric looking alien and humans were instead space Indians or some shit. Wtf 343😑. And he gets killed of in the same game but not really, he survived and gets killed again for the second time (in a f&#@ing book starting to see a pattern here) but actually not really…..again only to have his story end in another book. A+ storytelling. I’m not gonna pretend like Bungies storyline is absolutely perfect in every aspect but they told a story that were explained in the games (for the most part) and had a start,middle and end. The new Halo book is actually really good, you should pick it up and try reading it. Btw, Bungie changed the lore themselves and decided that humans and forerunners are different species. Watch the H3 terminals ( I’m sure you know this).

the fact that the first warthog in the game forces you to jump out of it immediately upon first enemy contact because you dont have a gunner speaks volumes. They put story(a story i found terrible personally) over gameplay. other than with co-op what the hell is the point of having a warthog there? you also barely use it too. I believe this is also the first level where the legendary difficulty's lack of ammo starts to rear its ugly head. Halo 2 made you feel weak because you are weak. halo 4 made you weak because you have no ammo.

I think 4 and Infinite (Infinite especially) do have some redeeming qualities, even if they're not up to the standard of Bungie's work. I generally struggle to tolerate 5, although some of the level design combined with the quicker movement and extra abilities can still make for some fun encounters.

@@BenPlaysGames I can agree with you on that, I played 5 once and I never even bought it lol.
