I have confirmed with BenQ that this monitor does not have 100% rec709 so for me it is a CON since it should be 100% rec709. I was not told how much of rec709 the monitor can do but I am assuming around 90-95% from my tests.

Thanks so muhc for saying that. Much appreciated. I wish KZbin hadn't remove the annotations function, I would have loved to add some new developments from NVidia. As of August they finally 'opened' support 10bit on consumer cards, of course, the rest I mention still stands, like support and stability of a Quadro, but it's great to know that GeForces can now also do 10bit in Pro apps, especially for students and low budget studios. Great review vid Hugo! Regarding your comment on no 10 bit working in resolve with GTX 1080 gaming GPU's. I recently discussed this matter with Black magic and was told.. If your end goal is to achieve 10-bit output to your grading monitor, a DeckLink PCIe card would be a good solution towards achieving this goal. As the card bypasses your system's ICC profile, it will provide an accurate signal with which to reference for the purpose of grading. In addition to this, Resolve 16.1 introduce the ability to output signal through your graphics card. This can certainly work, but do keep in mind outputting through your GPU will put the signal through the system's own ICC profile. Further calibration will be required for a color-accurate image. The GPU's output will be 10-bit if your system supports it. Generally, DisplayPort will support 10-bit output, but I've also heard of HDMI output from recent GPUs being 10-bit. Just keep in mind that the GPU's output will inevitably be constrained by ICC profile of your system. Calibrate accordingly. do you know this to be true in resolve 16.1? thx!
@HugosDesk5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information but I have been using a Video Card to the output video signals for 20 years (I have used Matrox, Blackmagic, Aja, and Bluefish to exclay bypass ICC). I know all of this. I think you misunderstood my review. I am talking about the viewport being in 10-bit. Until this summer, before NVidia supported 10-bit Open GL and 10bit support on pro apps on GeForce, you would have to use a Quadro to have 10bit in the viewports. I am not talking about the video out, I am talking about the viewports of Nuke, Photoshop, DaVinci, After Effects, etc (I mean desktop). In fact, I also talk about using the monitor as a reference monitor using a Blackmagic card too. On my review and on my current setup I have 2 BenQ. One connected to a Quadro to display 10bit on the desktop viewports of the Pro Apps and another BenQ used as a reference monitor using a Blackmagic Decklink. And yes, you are correct, I do this to bypass ICC. I hope that cleared it up. Thanks for watching it.

Great review. Very thorough. A couple of questions if you don't mind. Have you used the original PD3200U? If so, have you noticed any improvements or is it purely the addition of HDR? I'm a freelance DP, but I do a lot of my own color work and I've been using that monitor for about a year now. Similarly, have you used any of LGs higher end IPS panels? Their 34WK95U-W boasts 98% DCI-P3, HDR 600 with a peak luminance of 600 nits, HW Calibration, and a Nano IPS panel with local dimming and a contrast ratio of 1200:1. Seems very competitive. The 32UL950-W is very similar except 16:9. And in regards to your comments about professional hardware, I've been debating moving over to the Quadro line for quite some time. I currently edit in Resolve using a GTX 1080ti and a DeckLink 4k. Do you think moving to a Quadro RTX 4000 would give me any benefits over editing with the 1080ti and viewing the reference with a Decklink 4k? Cost is high with this genre of electronics made for professionals and there's not as much info/reviews out there for them. Thank you for any advice you may have and I appreciate the time and effort you put into this review.

Thanks so much for watching. Regarding your questions: Regarding the original PD3200U: Yes, I have used it before and the PD3220 is a massive improvement. Better uniformity, better delta, HDMI 2.0, 4 way PBP, HDR10, Puck 2.0, it is a huge improvement I think. Regarding the 34WK95U-W: Never used it and it does looks good but are you sure it is a 10-bit panel? Can't find any information on that. It is a Consumer monitor so I would probably say it is 8-bit but maybe I am wrong? I also can't find the delta value or any certification from Calman or Pantone. Not sure about this one. Regarding a Quadro: If you are editing professionally I would advise a Quadro. It will give you 10-bit on the viewport of DaVinci for example. Cheers

@@HugosDesk Appreciate your response. That's great to hear. I had an sw320 before, but ran into a lot of QC issues. Had to return 2. Figured they might be skimping out on parts in order to punch really high for the price so I bought the pd3200u. Never any QC issues, but it definitely didn't perform as well so I've been looking for an upgrade ever since. And I was fairly certain it was 10bit because I remember asking LG at CES when they brought this panel to the show, but after more research It's using dithering to be able to claim those 1.07 billion colors. 8bit+frc is definitely not ideal. I've been seeing more and more consumer panels above the $1000 mark include true 10bit at shows, so I didn't question it when they told me. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Looks like I have some purchases on the horizon.

If you are using the decklink you absolutely don't need a quadro since your color is coming off your decklink which is max 12bit off the hdmi and 10bit off the sdi outputs. So there is no point is running 10bit off the graphics card since that is not your color reference anyway. A decklink is also way better in terms of just the colorscience. IT also won't match since the whole point of using the decklink is to get your actual final output sent to a reference display.
@HugosDesk5 жыл бұрын
@@RandyLittleStudios I am talking about 2 very different things. The first one is the desktop being in 10-bit and the second one is the video output on a video card like the decklink. A Quadro/Radeon Pro (and not the GTX with the latest announcement from Siggraph) can give you full 10-bit support on the interface's viewport inside creative applications. This works well in PS, Nuke, DaVinci, etc. A Decklink/Aja/Bluefish card can give you a proper 10-bit video signal output using SDI or HDMI. Perfect for reference monitoring. For editorial and grading work I highly recommend using a video card like the Decklink/Aja/Bluefish to correctly preview frame rates and have the correct color science. But, if you want to be even more accurate you can use 10-bit in the desktop, this way you have 10-bit on the video out and also on the application viewport inside the desktop. That is what I am talking about. Hope it cleared it up. Thanks for watching
@RandyLittleStudios5 жыл бұрын
@@HugosDesk if he has a decklink he doesn't need accurate color on his desktop since clearly the desklink is outputting what is in his viewers in proper color so the color of his desktop is irrelevant as long as his decklink is hooked up to a proper 10bit display. So there is no point is moving from his decklink to a Quadro which was his question. The answer is no if your output is the decklink there will be little advantage. Unless you really need your non reference viewers to be close to your 10bit reference which if you have good monitors would only be some banding maybe.

I'm looking into a low-cost color correction pipeline on iMac Pro or a new Mac Pro and notice the PVC monitors don't have a true 10-bit input. I thought USB-C - HDMI 2.0 and Displayport are the only options. Please let me know if you can lend some insight. Thanks Hugo!

All these monitors are 8-bit+FRC. They support 10-bit but they 2 last bits are simulated. This is common tech for this price point. Most 8-bit monitors are in fact 6-bit+FRC. The industry has been doing this for a while. To have true 10-bit you need to spend around $5K on a Eizo or the Apple XDR. Or get a reference monitor from Sony or Dolby for $25K.

Sorry to hear that. That was a quick change of heart! I am very happy with my BenQ PD3220. Have you tested diferente color profiles? @@HugosDesk I figured out it is a scaling problem and not a problem with the display. I made a test with photoshop making a 1px and 2px lines and moving those around on different scaling options. This is the feedback I sent Apple: "I just bought a 32" professional thunderbolt 3, 4k display (BenQ PD3220U). What I noticed, that when using MacOS display scaling, the pixels get distorted. Eg. if I have 1px wide pixel, it looks 1px wide in some part of the screen and 2px wide in another part of the screen. Depending on a placement, some two pixels might be shown on a screen as 3px or 4px wide. The scaling works correct only in case of 2x scaling (and when using the native resolution - no scaling). So I would have to use 1920x 1080 resolution for 32" monitor. So the options basically are 1920x1080 or 3840x2160, which neither are good options. Windows handles this in a different way. In their UI it is possible to just eg increase the font size a specific percentage => distortion never happens, unlike in OS X."

@@SinusPrimus I see, well I can't hear it but keep in mind I do have a Mac pro 6.1 right next to it. I can try switching everything off and test the Db on the monitor later today but it won't have picture so not sure it will turn the fan on.. I was not even aware there was a fan. I guess my office is too noisy, lol
@SinusPrimus5 жыл бұрын
@@HugosDesk That would be interesting. I hope there is no fan into the monitor.

@@HugosDesk Could you please make a noise-test of the monitor? if the mac pro is to loud you could connect your laptop.

I m here because I was searching for a 10bit monitor and yes your video is really insightful and helpful, nothing against it truly! But the way you talk its funny! Even better when you refuse to acknowledge you say compositing wrong. Peace m8! Have a good one!*

Is it True 10-bit or 8-bit+FRC?
@HugosDesk5 жыл бұрын
Almost every ‘10-bit’ monitor is 8-bit+FRC. To have true 10-bit you need to get a much more expensive BenQ SW320 or a Eizo CG. I can guarantee you you won’t see the difference. Btw most people don’t know this but most 8-bit monitors are in fact 6-bit+FRC

Thanks, and what can you say about HDR ? This monitor has HDR-10 whereas for instance LG 32UL950 has HDR-600, will I see the difference between those HDR options ?

You forgot to mention no sync...too bad since the similar spec/price LG product supports FreeSync.
@HugosDesk5 жыл бұрын
I did not forgot. This is a professional 10-bit monitor. If you need a gaming monitor you should look for BenQ’s gaming range. As I mention these are for color accuracy and professional work like working in After Effects, DaVinci, Nuke, etc. Thanks for watching

Well, I can't ever please everyone can I? But to be honest I do have a feeling this is your problem. No one ever complained about the music being too loud. Only you!

8bit + frc
@HugosDesk4 жыл бұрын
Yes that is true! Just like ‘8bit’ monitors are actually 6bit + frc. To get a true 10bit monitor you are going to have to spend a lot more money then this model. bit emulation has been around for a long time and it works pretty well. I know from experience! I have a real 10bit display and I can’t see the difference and neither can’t my color meter. Anyway thanks for watching
