Whisky.com reviews the Benriach The Smoky Ten. Benriach The Smoky Ten is the slightly smoky version of the new 10-year-old from the Speyside distillery. Like the non-smoky bottling, this one also matures in three types of casks: Bourbon and rum casks and fresh white oak casks. The slightly sweet smoke results from the peat, which for Benriach is mainly extracted from the Scottish inland. The design of the bottle and tube are based on the original Benriach from before the closure in the 1990s.

I've got a 12, Curiostas and Birnie Moss on my shelf so I'm super exited to get ahold of these new bottles. They don't sound similar at all. I'm not sure what the point is with all this self competition (10 vs 12, peaty 10 vs peaty 12) is though. It might sucker me into trying each as I did with Talisker, but I'm just going to pick the best one and ignore the others afterwards.

One of my favourites probably because I also like Rhum, but like the whisky there is good Rhum and bad Rhum.

I just opened a bottle of this and am trying it for the first time. I am a little disappointed. I think the rum casks have too much influence and not enough smoke.

In my book this is way less peated than Curiositas. It is much sweeter and full of caramel flavours (jamaican rum casks). But... I liked it very much (I disliked Curiositas). If you dont like rum though, you might not like smoky 10 as well.

I am trying to drink this stuff right now but this is so bitter and tastes so young. The worst single malt I ever had.

It's twenty four hours later and the flavour profile of the three quarters full bottle has improved (dark chocolate) mouth feel is a little better too but the 3year old type burn is the same. I won't be buying this again.
