Benro Gimbal & Mini Max

Product review of the Benro carbon fiber gimbal head and the Mini Max travel stool. Both products were sent to me by my friends at Hunt's Photo & Video in Melrose, Massachusetts. First time I see a review of a stool in wildlife photograpy :-) And it's very important too. I rather take the stool than my tripod if I have to choose. I use a little plastic foldable kitchen thingy, and people often wonder why I lug that thing around on the back of my backpak. A knee-protector for working in the garden is usefull too, and it fits in the computer part of your backpack.

Thanks for the review! My first concern is if there is any play in the mount, so if you have it level and tighten the horizontal, does it remain level? Second is the fluidity of movement with zero jitter. Then thirdly which is purely taste "drag" which would only be a niggle when it comes to astrophotography, small gentle movements while observing craters of the moon. So I am sold on this gimbal. Also here in New Zealand you can buy a variety of cheap $50-$100 gimbals, but i would rather pay for what it is worth than a cheap gimbal with no reviews, or reviewed where the locking mechanism starts failing.

I have for the most part moved away from using a Gimbal head except with my Skimmer ground pod for shorebird photography. Now for the most part I use the FlexShooter head, less weight, much better drag and IMO just a better design.

For drag, if possible, put in a pressure spring. That should do it for less than $2 CAD.

Thanks for the video. I have a Kowa spotting scope that I digiscope with. I got the Manfrotto Befree Live Carbon tripod and it's not up to the task. Even the lightest breeze causes excessive shaking and the motion is not smooth and I to "overshoot" the target and release to get the image I need. I have completely failed to find the right tripod and head. I thought the Benro GH5C was the answer but your review suggests I should look for something elseee. What do you recommend for the tripod and head?

Sorry for some reason I did not see your question, my fault. It you are looking for a tripod head for photography as I mentioned in another reply on this video I would look at the FlexShooter head. You can check out my KZbin review. As for a tripod have a look at Gitzo or Really Right Stuff (RRS) carbon fiber. I've always thought spending my money on a GOOD tripod is money well spent.

Where's your favorite place for birds at Myacca Park ?

Jerry I believe you are asking about Myakka River State Park in Sarasota. There are many good spots in the park for bird watching however for bird photography here's my favorites. 1. Near the old weir which I believe was recently removed. 2. The shoreline from the boat ramp left towards the Myakka River. 3. Depending on the water level sometimes the bridge. 4. The Bird Walk 5. The Powerline trail towards the river.
