I feel like she's always been able to defend herself, but she has grown since he left. I was so upset when he left and I was like crying right along with her, but it's like she told Nick as long as she has stabler she couldn't have anyone else and she couldn't grow. Stabler she had to keep him staying and help him and his relationship with his family and with his other coworkers and with the boss and she was so wrapped up in him that she couldn't have anyone else and she couldn't be anyone besides his partner and now she's just become so much of her own person

Without a doubt, he doesn't stop her anymore for the reason you mentioned. She's proven she can take care of herself as much as possible. Always at risk for injury or death obviously but I've noticed Fin let's her go and doesn't stop her. It's best for him to let her go anyway.
