Amazing to think this horse once had three fractures in three different legs at the same time, survived that but later lost his vision. Such a magnificent, resilient, talented and determined horse. A fantastic duo these two are.

Sara, Agreed with your post. I wasn't referring to weight carrying, but since you mention it, the wild Mustangs of North America are a great example of a wonderfully powerful little horse. Most of them are under 14.2 h, but wow, so strong and quick to respond. They go back to the Iberian horses. Spanish Barbs and Andalusians brought to America by the Spanish. I have one. She's really a great little horse.

The difference between a true partnership with a horse and the way wannabe cowboys THINK they can handle a horse. Their motto is "yank, spur and whip", and do it often. I have the cassette called The Art of Classical Riding where Bent Brenderup and Hugin perform. It's a beautiful cassette and I'm so glad I bought it.

Pearls of Danish wisdom. A happy, obedient horse certainly can make a happy rider of any size. Yet, my concern is real. In Denmark, men ride. In the US, ladies & 10 year old girls ride. Repeated trauma to the joints, jumping off tall horses for years has been causing athletic arthritis injuries that mimic the injuries of sky-divers. Growth plates in children are important. Requiring riders to step up & down from ground with stirrup in dressage tests would solve this problem for many, I believe.

I love to see a happy horse! I notice that Bent Banderup does not seem to ride giant horses just for the sake of size. He and Hugin are very proportionate. I have this idea, call me crazy, that a horse and rider won't manage unity if the rider is a fly on a giant. I am short, my kids are short, and I have taught them to make sure they are proportionate to their mount. That relegates us to large ponies & horses of 15.2h, but the conformation & power is there, and communication is more natural.

The height of the horse has very little to do with how much weight it can carry without straining it's back too much. Factors like a broad strong back and appropriate (and correctly trained) musculature are far more important then the mere size of a horse. That's why breeds such as the old-fashioned Knabstrupper and Iberian horses (etc.) are preferred in academic riding, simply because their physique is best suited for carrying a grown person.
