Fantastic stuff vince, and thanks for the mention too. So happy to see you've fixed your first BSOD, definitely looking forward to when you reball one 😀 Just a heads up, the BSOD is actually a communication issue between the CPU and RAM (hence why sometimes it will be the ram at fault). If the pressure test doesn't work it usually has a pulled trace on the bottom right side of the cpu, they're a pain in the jacksy lol. Keep it up, your repairs get better every day!
@Mymatevince2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cod3r, I will look at the 2nd one when the solder balls finally arrive from China. A nice RAM reball would be a good one to start off on, fingers crossed that might be what the 2nd one needs 👍👍👍
@TheCod3r2 жыл бұрын
@@Mymatevince can't wait for that one. Ram would definitely be the best way to get into reballing becsuse of the size of the chips. It may have taken so long because of the nozzle being left on too, I tend to remove the nozzle for switches because it spreads the heat better 😁
@Mymatevince2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCod3r I did think the nozzle didn't help. Also my hot air station isn't the best for the bigger chips. Next time if it is the same chip, I will try it without the nozzle to see if I can beat that time!🤣👍👍

What a nice looking switch. That colour is brilliant! Mr. Rossman answered a question about taking big cips of from macbooks. His answer was you do not need a board heater it is possible to do as good of a work if you pre heat it in the oven to 100 degrees and take the chip out right after, it is probably easyer to reflow a chip that way as well. I had a switch with random BSOD. It ended up being liquid damage around the Max77812 That IC supply's voltage to the APU. For me applying pressure on boot didn't fix the issue, and for good reason. So if you ever come across a switch with BSOD and it's not bent or drop damage, check those MAX ICs :) Edit: you should change the Pl3USB anyway and see if you have docking. The quality of your videos are fantastic. Good job Vince! You deserve a good fix!!

As far as I am aware, the same video output off the Tegra SoC is fed to the screen while not docked and to the C port via the hdmi encoder and related chips when it is docked. I don’t think the SoC is at all to blame for the dock not working.

A very good tip I got was to increase the chance of a successful re-flow. Just put a bit of flux on one side of a big chip like a cpu or apu and tilt the board up, then heat just the flux until it melds and it will run under the chip just by gravity. Once it comes out on the bottom along the complete length of the chip you know that every solder ball got some flux. This way you use less flux and do not have to clean connectors and stuff. Then you put it back down and heat it up gently. This way your chances are still shit but a little bit better ;D....

Excellent video as always Vince, I was happy to see this video this morning. bravo on your reflow. I mentioned in your Mac video, I had a switch lite(water damaged) but I got it working fine in sleep and on. but the fan would go at full speed when off. Well I finally had the courage yesterday to reflow the apu (no nozzle) and the switch is working fine now. so something to look into, with your mac. did you check the usb c port in diode mode for readings on the pins? even with no reading on the data plus and minus in the port from the CPU. the switch still docks. it just doesn't enter rcm or let you connect to a computer. I'm wondering if the port has become bent with the flexing cheers, and keep it up.

When heating up the top of a chip, why not get a heat detection gun (like infra red) which gives out temp while you heating the chip. This way, rather than guessing you at a temp to melt the solder you have more confidence. Just a thought

I was watching a Louis Rossmann video, he was repairing a laptop, and suggested putting the board in your oven to heat up the entire board then you do not need as much heat to the part you want to work with as the board is pre-heated. Apparently they make board heaters for it but suggested the oven if you do not have one. I do not remember what temp he said to get it to. Maybe worth checking in to when working with CPUs.
