Interesting to see this. It is two Volkswagen VR6 engines that share a common engine block and crank. The W12 concept is clear to me now. Thank you for posting this video.

I have one critique of how they bolt things down... Nothing is tightened down in a criss cross pattern. Often they just ram down with the first bolt... I know it's faster.. but it's against everything I been taught and experienced as a mechanic... Weather it's an axle shaft, a transmission housing, or an exhaust manifold... as well as a front chain cover... they all should be cross tightened... I saw very little of that.

While i agree with you and i do the same, i believe it's probably more of a piece of mind thing then anything. Bentley spends millions of dollars on R&D and engineers to optimize every aspect of building the engine. These technicians would have to go through intensive training and would be taught specific practices. None of the technicians would do anything that hasn't been cleared by Bentley.
@bugbomb8048
@bugbomb8048 8 жыл бұрын
There again Frank take some time and write to Bentley and tell them they are just not doing that the right way. Tell them your Chilton's manual said to do it differently. My question to you is why would you buy a $19.99 dollar manual you got from Rock Auto to work on someone's Bentley?

What a massive, complex beast of engineering! i think a more accurate title though would be "How it's assembled", since we never see how any of the individual components are made (forged, cast etc). Trade secret I guess. Technically, provided you are a competent mechanic or engineer, you can disassemble the beast and reassemble it exactly as they did.
@williamallman299
@williamallman299 8 жыл бұрын
Until you assemble the components it's not an engine, it's just parts, so the title is accurate, it's just your thinking that's faulty.
@mfx1
@mfx1 8 жыл бұрын
That video would be hours long. Hell you'd need to go back to the mining of raw materials if you wanted a true making off video and many of the parts will have come from 3rd parties. Thousands of people will have had some involvement in making this engine just like with any other product.

@ivanivonovich9863
@ivanivonovich9863 8 жыл бұрын
Yes it would seem so... But just because the Germans engineered it does not mean that it is the best! The Germans had an 88mm gun in WW2 that broke down more often then the US equivalent. More parts does not equate a better anything.
@williamallman299
@williamallman299 8 жыл бұрын
Ivan iVONOVICH You are correct, but that is only half the story. Things were rushed through production during the war, resulting in less-than-optimal products. But nowadays it's generally recognized that German engineering is some of the best in the world (not necessarily THE best, but certainly among the best). And it is axiomatic in engineering that the more complex something is, the more parts it has, the more likely it is to break down. Thus modern engineering involves many stages of development to reduce that as much as possible.

two worst car myths are as follows: 1. Old engines or cars shouldn't be fixed, because as they break contantly, you lose more money than if you bought a new one. this is a tautology, which results from itself and functions as a car market enforcement 2. old cars are supposed to work on their own withouth any awareness by the driver

Have you ever tried to wind an electric motor? They are not that simple either. And an electric motor still requires a computer controlled module & batteries... Which do more damage to the environment from all the special metals that are required to store the energy that has been generated somewhere else, and then transmitted to the place of recharge. And remember when anything is "recharged" it requires more energy to do so...

the Bugatti has got the W engine because it has 3 zylinder heads. this has 2 VR heads each zylinder has up to 15° to each other and the heads up to 90°. The VAG (Volgswagen AG) describes the V VR motor as a W motor but it‘s not true. (I work at Volkswagen)

Thought the same thing. My daughter had a petrol engined Mini One that started idling very oddly. Timing chain was slack causing the timing to go out beyond limits. A very trusted mechanic looked at it, saw the plastic guides all mangled by the chain and plastic bits visible in the oil when drained. I expected him to quote for chain and guide replacement - he didn't, just said that he could do but couldn't warranty the repair as these engines were becoming notorious - the plastic shards block the smaller oilways and newly repaired cars are running bearings. He said his advice was get rid of the car so we traded it in at a Ford dealer!

True. Makes changing sparks and oil super pricey. But.....if you own a car of this magnitude, rarely are you thinking of the cost of fixing. Your more concerned about how to wash your black market money in a off shore back account.

FunctionOfSpeed I think the engines with the turbos mounted within the 'vee' of the cylinder banks is the new version of the W12, whilst the one with the turbos mounted outboard of the cylinder banks is the older version.
