It's not just plastic and they are designed for quiet operation. You get into trouble with long drain intervals that seem to be the recommendation from BMW. End of the day, I think the timing chain replacement is something that needs to be done on an engine at some point in time along with the guides. Too bad manufacturers stopped using timing belts since they had a predefined service interval and didn't rely on engine oil for cooling and lubrication.
@pattonpending7390

@@brarautorepairs thanks. I work in the plastics extrusion industry, and can assure you that Nylon is a plastic. What ever they are made of, and given that they tend to degrade over time and get brittle and fracture, seems to indicate that these are not the right polymer for the job.

Have you seen this car take a tight turn? It kinda - just slides off the road, because this engine is a 800 pound pig that creates a really messed up center of gravity. I had a 1971 Catalina that drove just like this. 400 big block - pushing over 550 ft-lb of torque at low rpm with high octane fuel, because it came from the factory at almost 10:1. There is nothing special happening here other than what they are charging. I am a data highway expert, and I have been in factories with automation, and technology that makes this clip look like 1982. If you are impressed with this you should get out more.

Engine out on all the W-Engines to do the chain service. The chains do last, but not forever. Tends to be the chain guides and tensioners that wear out before the chains, tho.

That would be a treat to put a timing chain in! A engine that precise and high end should be gear to gear on the timing. That would be a major upgrade!

This is the first time I have seen the inside of one of these engines. Do you want to laugh? I was recently told by a mechanic that for only $1,400 he would change the timing belts on a 2005 Continental, which were passed due. Unless the 2005 engines had timing belts, instead of timing chains, I don't think I'll bring the car in for that work. 2:19

The timing chains (there are more than one) on these engines and the VR6s that preceded them require the separation of the engine and transmissions in order to replace the chains and guides. On the VW Phaetons, both the W8s and the W12s, this required removing the entire drivetrain assembly forward of the rear driveshaft to do so. I worked at a VW dealership as a tech for 12 years, and fortunately I never had to perform this work on the Phaetons, but I definitely cursed my luck when I'd draw that job on the VR6 Golfs, Jettas and Eurovans. Special tools are mandatory to do this work on any of these engines.

I work on an automotive assembly line, specifically engine dress. 600 engines a day +/- for the past ten years. I’ve put in over 1,000,000 bolts. It’s still debilitating. They try to take all the lifting out but it adds up regardless. Don’t worry, they pay well.

Technically you can repair the engine while it's in the car but it would take ages too much labor time, These engines are designed so you could lift the car of the engine by lowering the subframe brings down the engine and transmission as one unit, once the engine is dropped down on the ground you have all the room you need to work on them. These engines are modulated software controlled whenever your working on them you need to hook up the OBD which guides into the repairing process.
