I like how it looks, but not the prize. I still have my old diy k1micro and it works just fine in conjunction with other filter (sponge/hob/canister). Good info given on this video, I like the honest review without bashing the product. Pros and cons of product weights in a lot in determining purchase. Nice job, keep it up.

It's not meant to be a mechanical filter...the sponge is purely to keep the crud out of the media. It is for biological, period. And can do that perfectly well. Not meant to be sole filter, meant in addition to a sponge or HOB loaded with sponge for mechanical filtration.

Nice review Bentley. I have had two of these in my 75 gal L494 Pleco tank for several months now. I bought them to test whether or not they lived up to the KZbin hype. Sadly, I’ve been very disappointed with the Ziss filter. For whatever reason, the airline clogs frequently (every 2-3 weeks). This is happening to other people as well. This is not a result of my water quality or other controllable factors. It is still a mystery as to why this is happening since water is crystal clear and the tank is kept spotless. The filters are too noisy, and I’m not talking about the bubbles. The noise comes from the churning media. In my opinion, you are better off sticking with Hydro Pro sponge filters for half the cost, or spending a few more bucks and getting an Aquaclear (if you’re into HOB’s). I have talked with many people who have tried these and the consensus is similar, the Ziss gets a thumbs down 👎. Your video review however, gets a big thumbs up 👍.

If the airline hose if translucent and get's enough light on it, it could be growing algae inside the tubing.

So after a long term use ( Two years) of this moving bed filter I have something to say that might add to some questions people have. 1. Never use this filter as youre only main filter. Its designed for a specific use, and if you want a full filter cycle, have a spongefilter/cannister or a HOB together together with this filter. 2. After a few months this filter will grow some hardy tough beneficial bacterias for youre tank water, but it takes a few months, maybe up to 5-6 monts fully mature. Why so long I hear you say, well its because of the media used, plastic. Plastic is not the best media for growing bacteria, but in this case (moving bed filter) for this application it works after a few months. For a new tank setup, I will strongly suggest using a spunge or cannister or HBO together with this filter. Or youre nitrogene cycle will take a loooong time to complete. I have this filter in a 80gallon tank with 6 goldfish (or pigs,they eat like pigs ;)) they eat alot and produce alot of waste, I have a Seachem Tidal 110 and one of this filters running together, In my case this is optimal. The Seachem do the mecanical and most of the bio filtration ( Seachem Matrix media) , then the Ziss add some biological filtration to my tank. In this config the Ziss bio Bubble is perfect. My ammonia and nitrates levels are very low, always close to zero, but I still do a 25% waterchange every week, just because I love my fish I want them to have the best conditon I can give them. This Ziss help with that. Together with the Big Boy Seachem 110. So the Ziss is a good addon filter that will be good, even greate in some scenarios. This is just my Personal take on the Ziss Bubble Bio filter.

I use mine in my 65g goldfish tank with a canister filter. The increased bio capacity is great for the fish, replaced a large sponge. Goldfish tanks with substrate always have particulates so what my canister lets by is no issue for me. I like it.

I've used multiple of these in different tanks for specific reasons. When they came out I was slightly excited because it was a nice excuse to get rid of all of the sponge filters I had in the tanks. The biggest advantage to removing sponge filters was that I free up space for the fish in the bottom of the tank, and these seems to be more focused on bacterial load as opposed to "cheap filtration". There were a few things you mentioned that I'd like you to consider. Firstly, the noise. These can be "loud" but the noise really isn't from the bubbles, it's from the media swirling inside and scraping the plastic. It's a pretty high pitched noise and I would highly recommend using the provided valve to control how much airflow is being pumped into those filters. Once you get the air pressure level right it's a lot easier to operate and maintain then a sponge filter. If you're using one line for multiple devices, that valve comes in handy because of how much flow these require and can take over a line. I wish there was an option for an extended depth sponge. I have issues with so much junk making its way past the sponge and into the media. I don't do daily water changes, and once you pop the sponge off there is definitely a lot of detritus that comes off if you don't use a bag. Second thing is the air level you mentioned, again, to keep it quiet you need to adjust air pressure and not water level. What I've found is that is the bubbles don't have room to flow out of the output correctly then you end up with the internal flow not working as well as it should and some of the media sitting. My biggest issue with these things is the quality and workmanship. I designed aerospace products for years, plastics tool molds as well and so I see little things that are pretty frustrating. I understand why it happens, but I wish things were designed a bit better. Issue #1, the hose, internally, isn't separated from the media. When you are adjusting the line it's pretty easy for the media pieces to get wedged behind the airline and specifically into the input/diffuser. The air still operates, but it causes the flow to drop enough that the media doesn't spin as it should. (this mixed with the bacteria on the media building up over time causes performance issues). #2 the flow valve that is provided almost always has some flash on the mold line. Take the black piece out and make sure you give it a good look over. It should be smooth, and considering this is what is used as the main interface for the design, the tool really needs to be reworked to fix that. Ok so! The filter itself, I used in a 29g, 55g, 40g bowfront tank. I generally use these to increase flow, not filtration. I use these in place of all my sponges for the reasons above and I use them in combination with HoBs. I want the water clear and clean, I want the junk off the bottom, but I don't trust the ziss by itself in any tank. It's not robust enough to filter things out. It's easy to clean and a great compliment, but it is not a great standalone filter. The exception would only be a tank for fry (raised panda corys for 6 months on this) or a tank where you have to use air and cannot have as much exposed sponge. (Crabs, crayfish, etc). hillstream loaches, plecos generally enjoy this filter and they like to hide around it.

The Ziss is basically a bio only filter, and a damn good one, never claiming to be anything else. So yeah, if you can only choose one filter (?) the Ziss might not be for you. It is also a relatively high capacity bio filter compared to sponges so wouldn't be needed in smaller tanks Probably perfect for a 3 ft long aquarium bio wise. 2 might be needed in 4 ft. heavily stocked tanks..

What about having the outlet slightly above the water line with a sponge under it to dampen the noise? Ok, you'd lose some water surface movement but I'm guessing you won't get too much of that anyway just being bubbles.

I would guess it was designed for a 40g at minimum-more likely a 55 and bigger; and designed to be paired with a mechanical filter. I’m making my own internal filter that I am going to try and pair with it. I like to separate my filtration-one for bio, one for mechanical. Of course I do that on 40g and bigger tanks. Way back in the 90s I read Sprung and Moe and Thiele; best education on the science of filters I have come across. I like this video! You explained your observations and let us decide whether this will work for us.

Great inadept review and thoughts. I have a 400L tank and use a DIY, pepsi max bottle version, on a threadfin rainbow tank. I dont use K1 media, but Biochips (5 times the surface area and biocapacity) and never have ammonia issues. The biochips I use have 3500m2 surface area (per 1L) and can process 90g of food waste/day). I dont see it as a stand along filter, I use it as a duo filter concept in conjunction with canister (all sponge, no biomedia). Canister removes solids, Bioreactor processes ammonia and nitrites. They both have very different jobs. My threadfins are zoo and phyto plankton eaters so the self cleaning properties of this filter (chips rubbing against each other, shedding biofilm) provides an awesome food source for fish and shrimp. I also use it on a 1000L aquaponic IBC and never have ammonia issues even with very high stocking rate. Rarely if ever do water changes and it all comes down to this awesome concept. Anything that eliminates water changes is a winner for me. Also one concept which would be good to explain is how it works, as the concepts of depth of diffusion, higher organism filtering (ie rotifers) and self cleaning properties are just mind blowing...for those bio nerds out there this link is a good start freshbydesign.com.au/aquaponic-aquaculture-products/biological-filtration/mutag-biochip-30-4/ Great review, keep it up.

I started running one of these on a planted 20 high where I plan to be breeding dwarf puffers. I'm really liking it so far. The noise is definitely more than just a normal sponge or HOB but not overly so, for me. I personally like the sound of running water though. I was looking for a filter that would provide heavy biofiltration (since puffers are messy eaters, and the amount of snails I'm always throwing in is ridiculous) and while I wasn't explicitly thinking of how particulates would be good for breeding, I definitely like that things stay suspended in the water column for a while. So far, I'm not convinced it's better than a sponge yet, but that may change once they continue to stock their own tank. Excellent food for thought though! And I'm glad you mentioned the sponge - I didn't realize that came off at all, so you've just saved me a ton of effort! 😅

Your tanks look great, but then I look up and see that plant that needs trimming or my Sparkling Gouramis chasing each other or a young shrimp that needs to be moved into the cull tank...I have plenty of live b-roll right here, and I can listen to you talking while I trim my hairgrass!

If it's too loud you might be pushing too much air through it. And if less air won't move it, remove some media like others have suggested. I have one running perfectly on a USB nano pump. Under the water a bit. A more gentle rolling of the media seems the best speed.

Great information in your video! I agree with everything that you pointed out. I purchased 3 Ziss filters. One never worked right, and I was unable to figure out the problem. It barely moved the bio around in the tube. The other 2 Ziss filters I liked very much, but I preferred a cleaner looking tank. So I ended up removing the Ziss filters and went back to my original setups, a HOB and Sponge. I still liked them, and perhaps they can be used for another project.

Any experience with a box filter? Seems old school but air powered fines filtration. Ceramic media has better surface area vs sponge. Right now i like corner matten filters as prefilters for canisters. Keeps the heater hidden and can protect shrimps from bulkheads, and is easy to use a net around etc. But it is a hige pita to clean vs a sponge. I like the review. I’m running this in a 40 breeder along with a Penguin Pro 275 hob so the fine particulates in the water column isn’t much of an issue for me (all my tanks run with two filters except the quarantine tank which is just sponge). I like the ease of removing the sponge section, it can be easier getting the sponge compartment off and on again than the sponge on the hob intake some days, but it is louder than any of the sponge filters. So while it’s a good biological filter is it that much better than a $6-$8 sponge filter?

I have no interest in trying the Ziss filter. To many negatives for me. Reach down under the filter to access the sponge is a big one. Plus as you said not very efficient at polishing the water. Hey Bentley, is there a difference between Rotala Indica and Rotala bonsai? I thought there wasn't, then an online retailer said yes. What say you? (Now I KNOW R rotundifolia is NOT either of these since there was some confusion before). Thanks.
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 5 жыл бұрын
@@byz513 True Rotala Indica is now called Bonsai. It was previously called an Ammania, but that has been re-classified. What most people call Rotala Indica is a strain of Rotundafolia that gets a dusky yellow hue in the upper growth. Short version: buy bonsai, not indica if you want the bonsai look.

@@BentleyPascoe yes sir. That's what I discuss with buce plant rep, but your explanation seems legit. I did get bonsai tc at my lfs. And what's up with Rotala rotundifolia RED and Rotala indica GREEN? are these really different strains or are they grown differently (different environments)? Oh, last question, I know you said in your videos that you use a small amount of co2. Are you talking 1 bubble per 3 seconds? Or slower?

I was considering this filter but might pass after this review. I have a hugely stocked Guppy tank with sponge filters that couldn’t handle the load. I added a hang on back with the sponge still running which has helped tremendously and again was considering adding a Ziss. Will leave the current setup for now! Thanks for the review as it has helped with my decision 🤓

@@BentleyPascoe I love my sponge filters I use them in all my tanks and one of my indoor ponds, just looking to find a way to take my over the top filter off the 55g but it has some Koi in it and they aren't the cleanest fish. I am going to try a Ziss with the sponge and see if it can keep up to the load.

So I guess my simple response would be. Why would I need denitrifying bacteria when I put plants in all of my tanks they give me denitrification naturally. But to answer more directly, no I haven't really looked into using a biopolymer.

I am wondering why everyone keep saying it is the best possible bio filter. I would love to see a scientific test running the side-by-side with say and uncle Clare or a sponge filter in three identical thanks, and does them with ammonia after they have been colonized to see what happens. Sure I know the theory about the biofiltration capacity, but who knows if it is really the best? I’d like some of the pros and cons you mentioned like not having to clean it too often and that might be enough to sell it, but it is really hard to know with the bar filtration capacity is without true testing

Everyone buys it because Aquarium co-op pushes it. They have good products and then not some good ones. Thanks for being independent rather than 2/3rds of the fish community who are sponsored by them or enamored by them.

@@kpNov23 I think a lot of what we see is folks getting an initial impression, but not several months or even a year of practical use. In general, I would say the Co-Op strives to provide really good products, but no one is perfect. I think this filter has its place, but it also is not a replacement for everything under the sun, but I can only really say that strongly because I've waited and played with it enough before saying my opinions on it. I wanted the data first.

Someone built a "better" mouse trap. The "old" mouse trap worked just fine and is a lot cheaper.... It's a bio filter in the same genre as a sponge. Sponge filter of same size would filter WAY more and prob cost less depending on brand and who you buy from. IMO, save your $$ and just stay with sponges. Sponges also offer the bonus of a large exposed surface area teaming with micro-life for small critters (shrimp ETC) and new fry to inhabit and eat from. The ziss filters doesn't really have this ability. p.s. For those who didn't get my metaphor. The "mouse trap" in question is biological filtration, to change ammonia to nitrite to nitrate.

Honestly I’ve been curious, but I’m that person who doesn’t want to see, or hear, mechanicals in my tanks. I even have a small canister on my 10 gallon. If I had a big fish room like many of us have I’m sure things would be different. So far it’s 2 in the living room and one in the office.

A few minuets talking with someone with a half decent 3D printer I could design the perfect simple clip on Jet for that thing also could design a simple adapter to marry it to an API style sponge filter making it the Perfect submerged air powered filter. We can make Millions 🤑 To be Honest I could design the smaller filter with nearly no issues other than I don't have access to the ability to prototype the designs for testing. I have had an idea the marries an under gravel and matten filter into a bit of a waterfall for smaller tanks to look more like a decoration than a filter.

Bentley, got one of these from Christina of gold coast Aquatics, she had them before Corey. I got it to provide more biological filtration which it does well. I use it in my 55 cichlid tank. Only problem I have had is the suction cups coming loose. Probably if I cleaned the glass really well I wouldn't have this problem. Supposedly they are coming out with a smaller version for smaller tanks.

I purchased one from Aquarium Co-Op. I didn't like it because it took up a lot of room in the tank and didn't look good. I also hated the noise it created after the water evaporated. I also don't like to stick my hand and arm into the tank to remove the sponge.

I have not had the noise bother my fish, they're quite active in the tank with it, but if the water level gets lower to expose the top, you will hear a bit of the media grinding from friction in the moving bed. I agree its a touch noisy, but there is some ways to mitigate it as well.
