I believe beneficial bacteria consume KH so I hopefully your KH plummeted due to it being consumed or at least hopefully that contributed to it.

It's far more positive than not that The Coop is so transparent. Your point that it should have been caught is spot on too. I think my background is similar to your own with regards to quality assurance. The jump in the failure rate will nearly always spike severely when going from a prototype batch (often hand made by the engineering team) to full mass production quantities. The Coop may have been a bit naive in not appreciating this about the manufacturing world - especially dealing with China. Decent quality can be made in China but not by default. When you negotiate a contract they used to ask, "How long do you want it to last?" The price they will quote - and consequently the quality of goods you will receive are indexed to one another to meet the factory's profit model. They can't let you have half a container's worth of heaters that will all last for five to ten years then not order any more of the "quality" stock for 18 to 36 months. The factory may be counted upon to spit out trailer loads and flood the online market with *white box* knock off junk versions for cut rate pricing under random seller names if there's demand in the market.

Bentley, I got into fish keeping when I was 71 years old. (2 years ago). I have a 20 gallon long community tank full of fairly colorful fish. The one fish that guests always ooh and aah over is my pink black skirt tetra glowfish. I don't regret buying it at all as it adds lots of color and is a very active & fun fish. I say to each their own. That's the beauty of the hobby.

I have been in this hobby for a ..... shall we say a very long time so I don't date myself, and have tried pretty much all the angles. In the end what I learned is that you don't need all that smart crap at all. In fact it just creates way way more headaches, the only smart device I ever consider using now is a timer that can tell time with an on and an off. I don't even use heaters, I just control room temp. Don't need smart lights, smart heaters, smart dossers, smart feeders, smart pumps or even smart fish. My tanks are all thriving and are all dumb as shit. Save your money people! If you get a smart piece of equipment just know it's because you want too and not because you need too, If you think you need it then you don't know what your doing. The word smart on packaging is nothing more than a marketing tactic by corporations to get even more money from your pocket to theirs. Edit: If you want to do smart on your tanks then do plants. Plants are smart and do a lot of work totally automatically, you just have to provide food they will do the rest fully automatic.

What you're saying about what a good boss/manager will do, and care about the employees absolutely resonates true. Admiral Hopper spoke on the same issue, saying leadership should have loyalty up AND down the chain of command. If it only goes one way, you don't have a leader, you have a manager. And you can't manage people into battle you need to lead them.

OMG! I didn't even know the UGFs were still made. I just spent 2 hrs listening to reviews on the newer filters available. I'm 74 and plan on setting my 20 gal long tank up after I get moved to Fairbanks, AK. Back in 1971, I bought a 10 gal setup for my first aquarium at Rich's Discount in Atlanta, GA. I asked a lot of questions and decided on the UGF they sold way back then. I also wanted it to be a salt water tank and had wonderful success. I had a few live rocks, a seahorse and something else. I was so surprised one day that the seahorse (male produced babies. One day I had little jelly fish appear. I had casualties though, as my uncle had 2 150 gal tanks and was raising brine shrimp. I allowed the shells to get into my tank and they stopped up the stomachs of the seahorses. The tank was so well balanced even for a 10 gal and my UGF looked just like the one in your video except it was white and I had about a half inch loosely woven mat that laid on top of the UGF. On top of that was the crushed oyster shell. The part I'm fuzzy on was the UGF was hooked up to an outside filter that maybe the power air tube fed?? Maybe you can refresh my memory on that part because I think I will go back to this after I move. Wonderful review from North Texas

Hey Bentley, I am forseeing a future where my humble 20 gallon gets overrun by guppies. I am coincidentally in the process of setting up a 40 breeder in my living room. I was wondering what a suitable sized “predator fish” might be that I could feed the extra fry too? Sorry if that’s not your style but none of my LFS will take them and it’s not a fancy strain or anything so selling them isn’t feasible either. I was thinking Congo tetras.

I just found at least 6 turquoise rainbows in my extracted plants that have been in a bucket for 6 days. I've been adding a bit of RO water each day. I was not expecting fry, I have not raised rainbows before. Wouldn't one of those disposable coffee filters clamped to the side and top of the tank work well?

$16 for a large jar is too much. I can get them for $8. I think your local store is gouging you. I also use the Spirulina. My fish love the stuff. The color enhancing flake that I got was super fine. Maybe I just got the tailing from a batch. It's fine for nano fish but my bigger fish won't go for it at all because it's just too small.
