Great video but I couldn't disagree more with creep mode. For me one pedal driving is a massive benefit of Evs and more specifically Tesla's. Manual cars don't have creep and they aren't dangerous.

Manuals aren’t dangerous because they have clutches. Creep mode has no impact on one pedal driving except for when you are going about 2mph or slower, i.e parking manoeuvres.

@@BenVallack there's a setting called 'object aware acceleration' for that. coming from a manual, creep mode was completely crazy to me. hold mode has many other advantages, like complete one-pedal driving and stopping on inclines. also just leaving the car after stopping and letting it put itself into park is nice. usually the only time I use the brakes is to 'start' the car.

It's really nice to have a car reviewer who doesn't try to do blokey stand-up comedy. Thank you. I got my model 3 two days ago. The indicator problem was the first thing I noticed and I spent much of the day mucking around trying to get it right, annoying quite a few motorcyclists. I'm glad you've pointed out the full beam point as you really need that around here, so thank you, and I've ordered a screen protector and some tyreweld. I can see the point with "creep mode", I suppose; I can imagine a scenario where you think you're done and you're not. I must admit, I miss my Leaf's cameras, which had a delightfully intuitive all-round view which made parking easier than this, and I miss the Leaf's nice simple foot-brake, really simple speed limiter, and its off switch. But from a usability and workflow perspective, the 3 has astonished me, primarily shown by the fact that we've hardly had to google anything - it's all just kind of obvious.

Great video, but I disagree with the comments about creep mode. Hold mode is brilliant and as soon as you open your door it goes into park. I scraped a wheel too. Part of that is that the steering is more direct than I'm used to so I clipped a kerb on the way out of a tight roundabout.

It's great creep mode is not the only option as being suggested in the video. Hold mode is superior for me. It's so much better to the point that I'd refuse to ever own another car that forces creep mode. I understand that some people still prefer it and I'm glad it's an option, as it should be. As far as the safety argument, we'd probably need to see some robust data and/or some studies. I wouldn't be surprised if creep mode causes more harm per miles driven than hold mode.

Hold mode all the way! Creep mode just seems to be for people who are too used to automatics. if you're afraid of hitting stuff by accident, just enable 'object aware acceleration' in the settings.

Love the thought you put into this, easily one of the best prep videos for ownership. I personally find hold mode felt really intuitive myself, but agree that if you aren't confident with the accelerator, it's probably best to stick to creep mode.

Some great tips . 👍 one for not hitting wheels on kerb , when in reverse adjust your mirror to see the wheel and kerb , then save that to your driver profile . Next time you switch to reverse the mirror will move to the saved position and return to normal when in drive .

I can’t get this to work. With auto-tilt enabled all that happens is they tilt down from their current position. With auto-tilt disabled they just don’t change at all. Saving the change in reverse just saves it for drive as well.

@@BenVallack hm strange , try disabling and setting and saving them yourself for reverse . Or with it enabled let them tilt all the way down , then adjust and save from there . Works on my model s .I usually park with drivers side against kerb , so I saved only that one side to tilt . Edit : model 3 will only save up and down adjustments for auto tilt , not side to side . Good information for new tesla drivers Had one for two weeks and indicators have been one of my only gripes so far. I find it easier to cancel before exiting works best in roundabouts. I find the regen is a game changer once you get used to it. Should also be safer as the car will stop if you're not accelerating. Manual cars don't creep so it's six in one half a dozen of the other.

I'm buying an EV this year. My orginal plan was to get an ID.3 but VW are completely screwed on manufacturing lead times and specs. Now you can only order the base spec and you won't get it until next year. Therefore I'm likely gonna go for a refreshed Model 3 standard range with LFP battery. This video was excellent, thank you.

Very useful set of tips, even though I drive in the US. Good advice on moving the car around in a safe location so you can get comfortable with the dimensions and vulnerable points of the car. Also the auto-beam dipping sensitivity has not been addressed in other videos I've seen so that was a useful one. That auto-dipping feature on my current ICE car works quite well, detecting other cars well before you are causing a glare in their direction. Thanks greatly for these comments, cheers.

One really useful thing to note about the preconditioning settings is that it is saved based on the cars GPS locations. This means that if you set it to pre-heat at 7am, drive to work, open the app and then re-set it to pre-heat at 5pm. It will keep doing both when you arrive at those locations! If you however park in a different street, it will not pre-condition at those times. This is extremely useful and I didn’t know at first.

Very interesting item on the roundabout. It seems the Belgian Traffic Code has anticipated these problems already! We don't switch on the turn signal when entering the roundabout and only use it for leaving the roundabout. It makes for far less confusion.

I absolutely love the regen breaks and not having to hold down the break during traffic.. And so to your point of the 'unintentional acceleration', there are hundreds if not thousands of these incidents just in the US every year, with regular ICE vehicles that does this.. Some people just seem to not be able to tell the difference between pedal A and pedal B .. lol

With regards to the indicator this is not a Tesla specific thing, there are quite a few cars with this setup and it takes any normal about two uses to realise that a quick trouble tap indicates the opposite way. Also you don't need a full press to exit a roundabout the 3 flas is usually more than enough. I've had this style of indicator for the last 7 years and actually prefer the return to centre stalk. Find it easier to cancel indicators than a fixed stalk

I was totally unimpressed with the Tesla supplied mudflaps, and all the cheap chinese ones too. So i bought rallyarmors for my model 3. They offer much better protection than the tesla flaps and are totally flexible even at very low temperatures. A bit of a faff to fit though. I also dislike the toggle style indicators for exactly the reasons you discuss. Even after 12 months of getting used to the car. I personally hate creep mode and turned it off as fast as i could find the setting. I've not had any control problems with the accelerator myself, but it can certainly launch forward pretty quick if you aren't careful. Switching to Chill mode really softens the response though and makes the car much easier to control at lower speeds. The Kurgo dog hammock is a good cover for the rear seat if you want the option to have a passenger in the back too, cos it splits in a way that someone can sit there next to the dog.

I appreciate your reasoning behind using creep mode. This is the way our 2016 Leaf operates but in our Model 3 I much prefer hold mode. Much easier in traffic. For someone new to the car and not used to the acceleration I would use chill mode. Yes, the indicator stalk definitely takes a lot of getting used to. Almost a year now and I think I have finally just got it. I do understand why it is like this though. The car has no locking switches or buttons at all. The interior lights are another perfect example. I assume Tesla's reasoning for this is so that everything goes through the computer and can be controlled in software.

Here are some more details addressing a lot of your comments about hold versus creep modes! Firstly if you are happy with hold then please carry on and enjoy it, as long as you are confident you won’t forget you are in drive and get distracted. But as advice for new users of silent vibration-free cars that can be in drive with no interaction or feedback requirement it strikes me that creep mode is the obvious choice especially if they are already used to automatics. It is very easy for people to become distracted. A screaming kid in the back seat could easily result in someone leaning into the back seat while stopped which increases the chance of a pedal press. If the user had forgotten they were in drive and ends up in that situation we have a bit of an issue if they were to accidentally stomp all the way down on the accelerator while leaning into the back seat not knowing what on earth is happening. (More on this scenario below) Before they know it they are doing 40mph across a junction. Someone mentioned hold is nice for stopping the car on inclines. The way it works on inclines in creep mode is it actually does apply the brakes automatically at the point you come to a stop as a result of braking. On inclines it does this even with a small braking force so it is very intuitive. On level ground this only happens if you press hard on the brake to engage the hold. So it’s actually a very nice experience on inclines in creep mode. People are mentioning regen being prevented by creep mode. This isn’t the case to any meaningful level. You can still enjoy full regen for all normal driving and very rarely need to use the brake while actually driving. It is true that in hold mode regen works to a slower speed but we are talking about regen at about 2mph for what would only be a very tiny distance before the brakes automatically apply. As a percentage of driving this must be less than half of a percent in terms of power regenerated! I doubt this would even be measurable on any meaningful level. There are some comments about trusting object aware acceleration as a solution to unintended acceleration. This is exactly the mentality that ends up with accidents. ‘My car will save me’. That system is an emergency system that may or may not work. Clearly relying on it would be foolish. That is like saying autopilot will stop you crashing while you text and drive. People are using the word ‘intuitive’ to describe hold mode. I can totally agree with that in terms of the stopping experience. Indeed the whole normal process is great and I can see why people like it. However ‘intuitiveness ’ really means knowing what to do without having to think and hold mode enables a very serious example of that. If the user is in hold mode they have no physical state to remind them they are in drive. Periods of time can then pass which then even further increases the likelihood they will forget they are in drive. As more time passes the greater the chance they will forget if they put it in park or not. Thus they are struggling to know what state the car is in. If they get that wrong and forget to check the screen, then start doing something they would normally only do in park like lean into the back seat. Again if you have given this some thought and know what you’re dealing with then for sure go ahead and enjoy it! But I do think the safer advice for new users is to stick with creep mode. If you are struggling with the accelerator response you can switch to chill mode - that really softens the response a lot. I actually tend to drive everywhere in Chill now cos it's fast enough and much smoother for passengers.

Have to say I quite like how the Renault Zoe handles (or at least handled, can't speak for the most recent models) creeping and holding. There's a small push-button behind the handbrake trigger which switches it from auto-handbrake to full creep. My one major gripe is that it doesn't brake to a full stop when activated, but essentially if switched on it would hold the brakes after a second of being stopped and holding the brake pedal, until you press the accelerator, which is great for stop-start traffic in cities, as well as on the motorway (or in my case autobahn). If deactivated it would creep like a standard automatic, great for parking and maneuvering. Very simple to switch on and off (not hidden in a menu, just a simple button with an inbuilt light!) and gets pretty much the best of both worlds. I think all electric cars should come with a fairly granular control over this, seeing as they're all capable of it, although I do probably prefer more control over this than the average person, and through my own admission I'm not a huge fan of the simplistic design and control of Teslas (I like buttons!) where such fine grained control would probably come at the cost of simplicity and "design", whatever that means.

You can actually control that with the brake pedal easily on a Tesla. If you want it to hold while you actually have creep enabled, just press slightly harder on the brake pedal and it will hold for you. I love that kind of intuitive revealing of functionality. Avoids needing any kind of separate interface at all.

Nope. Please see video. There is a software glitch that I show in the POV shot. The auto cancel event still fires even if you have just signalled off, thus cancelling your exit signal almost instantly.

Got mine exactly six months ago, still haven’t figured the double-press for the turn signal on roundabouts 😄 Done quite a few roundabout exits without turn signals OR chaining three signals after three signals while trying to cancel them. Not sure for the creep, never driven an automatic before. I’ve got used to “hold” really fast. On one drive the car warned me that hold was momentarily unavailable and I needed to apply brakes to stop, it was really painful. I chose to park and do a reboot after a few minutes.

That happens usually when the car is too cold. The hold works by using regen braking to bring the car to a stop, and when its too cold the motors cant do regen, so hold doesnt work. You have to let the car warm up before it starts working again.

@@ThePandaKingFTW maybe but not sure. Description of Hold says that it blends in the brakes at the end to make the car stop. In my case, it happened after an emergency braking because the car in front suddenly stopped yielding to a pedestrian (even if there was enough distance between for me to stop slowly). It was the only time, and it started working again after a reboot.

I curbed my right rear rim almost immediately after driving off the lot in my brand new Tesla. I took the wheel cover off and filed the rash down so it wouldn't slash my fingers the next time I washed the car. Which, by the way, there are innumerable videos on how to wash your Tesla so be sure to check a few of those before blithely taking it through the standard car wash machine which will happily scratch your paint irreparably.

Can’t disagree more re creep mode. I don’t like it in automatics and have never set it on on my S85 since taking delivery in 2014. The throttle is extremely easy to modulate and I’ve never had an issue with it. Re reversing, it’s much better to set your mirrors to tilt when putting the car into reverse. Basically you get into the car, put the car into reverse and adjust the mirrors to be in and down, basically looking at the curb and the rear wheels. When you put the car into drive again the mirrors will return to your normal driving position. In this way you always get a perfect view of where the wheels are in relation to the curb and you can avoid hitting anything.

Everything makes sense one way or another but like most Tesla family members, I will have to disagree with the Creep mode instead of Hold. To be honest, it just took me a couple of times driving my Model 3 for the first time to decide that I will never ever go back to ICE and, that Hold Mode is the way to go forever and ever. Forget Creep, Roll, or any other “trick” and stick to Hold. You can get used to it in no time, and contrary to what you are saying, you have much more control that way that having to use both pedals when parking. You compared it to a weapon, well, I do own weapons, and I know precisely where the trigger will shoot on each of my weapons. And I know precisely how to press the pedal on my Model 3 to make it move at any desired speed. And I have been with it for just 3 months and I do not commute with it because I work from home. Just like it is mandatory to know my weapons and use them even in the dark, I also consider mandatory to know your vehicle(s) the same way. Cheers

Your awareness is the exception to the rule I think - hold mode in the right hands is of course fine. I would always recommend creep mode to someone coming to these from new though and wants the most predictable feedback of what state the car is in.

When I took a test drive, the Model 3 was set to "Creep". But ever since I took delivery, I've had the car set to "Hold". Not, only does it make driving easier, but it also increases regenerative braking and reduces wear on the brakes.

Cheers! Yeah there is a low speed collision avoidance feature but trusting that would be pretty foolish. What if it fails or maybe it doesn’t work on a small child etc.

The mud flaps actually damage the car. They are mounted to metal and are exposed from the top. Sand and small stones can drop in between the mud flap and the skirt. Over time it will rub through the paint causing them to rust early. Tesla actually fixed it on the Model Y making all parts plastic and thus avoiding the issue. I would not install them and remove them on any Model 3.

So I have a 2010 Opel Corsa and it does actually the exact same thing with the indicators. Both of them (the left one for indicators and the right one for the windscreen wipers) go back to the middle position after you pressed them. It was rather confusing for me in the beginning too because I was also used to them staying up or down but now that I got used to it it’s actually so weird in other cars where they stay in place. The canceling is different for me though, I need to do a half press in the other direction just like you would in a „normal“ car (at least I think it’s that way because I stopped thinking about it) and I sometimes have the problem that it indicates like 2 or 3 times in the wrong direction because I tried to cancel it at the same time my car canceled it.

My BMW is the same. Didn't take long to get used to it and now prefer that setup. Can't say mI found the Tesla system any different than what I've gotten used to

BMW's have the same indicator style which always return to the central position, although I never experienced the problem you described at roundabouts; you can go from full right to full left indicating with one click of the stalk. Still the fact that it always returns to the central position seems like a solution to a non-existing problem imo. I would like it to have a setting where the half click would give 5 instead of 3 flashed like in my Kia, I find it more suitable for lane changes and roundabout exits.

Yeah I think the BMW implementation must be doing something differently. The issue with the Tesla is the auto-cancel timeout still fires even if you just changed its direction.

I got the Spigen matte screen protector and immediately took it off after 1 drive. Ended up replacing it with their glossy one - much, much better. The matte one makes glare drastically worse when driving with sun coming through the back windows. It just spreads the glare and completely washes out over half the screen in the worst cases. Even at 100% screen brightness, I couldn't see anything on the screen for an entire stretch of my drive when I was facing away from a sunset. Also, I personally found the fuzziness so bad that it was almost hard on my eyes - like the screen resolution was reduced by 50%. One more thing is that the contrast is hugely lowered and gives the screen a very faded look, which only makes the glare spread issue worse. Overall, I would much rather have a perfectly clear/vibrant display and have to move my head a bit to see around hard reflections or bright glare spots on rare occasion. I don't think I've ever had so much to say about a product...Lol.

Great video and I’m not picking a fight but I wouldn’t put my kids in the MiFold seats. Maybe a 12-year-old in an emergency but no younger. There’s virtually no protection in any collision scenario. Which, the consumer association, gives them zero stars, a Don’t Buy and a safety warning. Good points made about protecting the seats though.

Yeah I’m aware of the lack of additional side protection. But they passed all the same tests as everything else to be classed as legal kids seats. I have very little respect for Which as an organisation, I have no evidence and this is just my personal opinion but some of the things they have said about products sometimes have lead me to think their content is mostly written by morons lol. I know in theory they do tests etc but as they say a little knowledge is dangerous. What I like about the MiFolds is how the belt actually can take up all slack around the kid, in our previous ridged seat the seat was much wider than the kids legs so there was quite a bit of lateral movement possible in the seat base under the belt. With the MiFold they are basically clamped to the spot! If I had a car without side curtain airbags I’d be more keen on a kids seat with the side protection but with curtain airbags all I see happening is the airbag hitting the seat into the kid’s head which sounds worse than just the airbag hitting the head. All quite an interesting topic and I’d like to do some more research into the testing that goes on and how seats behave with and without side curtain airbags though.

What is very interesting is the side curtain airbag in the 3 comes down much further than the one in the Y in the rear. Almost like the Y is designed to not hit a car seat and would be better with a seat with side protection. In the 3 it almost looks like it would be better without side protection due to the airbag being so big.

One more point, it looks like the crash tests are done with bigger kids with booster seats rather than car seats with side panels. This is interesting as it means cars are going to be designed to do well for kids even without side protection. The one thing that does concern me is the height of the head is much lower with the mifold - so the might end up being lower than the airbag - I will do some tests and see if my kids heads are high enough for the airbag. I think in the 3 they probably will be but in the Y I think I may go for a booster seat again if they seem too low.

@@BenVallack Good of you to reply. I take your point about Which in general but as a consumer, I can't test these things myself so I have to trust in the test results of an independent body instead. Your point about the airbags, while a sensible conclusion, is not backed by testing. It could be that the energy applied to the neck in the opposite direction is the real problem rather than the energy of the airbag hitting the head in the first place. Portability and transfer between vehicles in not a concern I have so I would prefer to stick with car seats that provide a high-back as these have been tested and shown to provide the best protection in frontal, rear and side impacts. It is strange that the current European and/or UK testing for car seats does not include a side impact test.

I can’t even recall the details now but I remember reading one of their articles that left me thinking they were just written by someone who has no real understanding of what they were talking about. How do we know the way they test car seats is in any way meaningful? Why don’t they share videos of the tests? (all just my opinion of course). It is definitely worth thinking about though that it could well be the opposite side protection that does the most benefit with these kinds of seat. I may well get bigger seats for them once we get the Model Y and can have the dog in the boot.

I sold my model y long range for 64k.. Lol used the extra money to buy a model 3 performance. loved it at first, but over time hate it. its so uncomfortable to drive everyday. the model y is probably the best made car in todays market. I ordered another one but probably won't see it till summer. UGH

Teslas Wifi is also not made for European frequencies. Just right next to the accesspoint and still not reception. Tried this with multiple and also European forums are full of complaints.

Couldn't disagree more about creep mode. Having a car move when you aren't directing it to is inherently dangerous. Having the car setup to slow to stop, auto-hold on stop, and not creep is by far the most intuitive and safest setup.

There is a point there but the argument I would make it having a car that appears to be ‘off’ in a state where it can go extremely fast with a pedal misapplication is a very dangerous position. We know from all the reports that pedal misapplication is common. If someone thinks the car is off and leans into the back seat to deal with a kid etc and then accidentally stamps on the accelerator pedal there is a serious problem. Of course this is avoidable by just paying attention but having a car move by default forces the user to notice the car is on and they will then have to put it in park to stop it. It is about dealing with the unknown state. Without engine noise etc the use could easily be distracted and forget they are in drive then start doing something that results in an accidental pedal press.

@@BenVallack Human error is always going to be a factor, at which point we have to ask which setting is more likely to result in an accident due to an inattentive driver. IMO, hands down, by a wide margin, it is having creep mode on. This really only comes into play when you think you are in park but aren't. It's super rare for anyone to stomp the gas, intentionally or accidentally, when they think they are in park. On the other hand, it is far more common when you think you are parked to get distracted grabbing something from the backseat, looking at your phone, whatever, and your car could easily glide forward into a collision at that point. All it takes is getting distracted, and we live in a world where we are constantly getting distracted. The other requires that you stomp on the accelerator by accident, which also requires a shocking lack of physical awareness of your own body. In creep mode you then also risk thinking you have the brake fully depressed, but only have it mostly depressed, and you creep forward to contact while distracted at a stop light/sign. I just don't see how it's any comparison. I encourage you to try it the way I described for awhile.

That’s exactly my point though, if you know the car moves forward as you release the brake you will always know you are in drive. Leaning into the back seat is pretty likely to hit the pedals and would be very dangerous if the car was ready to go! The point is much more time can pass in hold mode allowing for the driver to forget they are in drive and start doing something stupid thinking they are in park. That time is passing in a state when they are not needing to be engaged with the car at all. With creep mode they are forced to maintain their understanding they are still in drive. Worse case scenario is the car creeps as a result of them getting distracted but they will have to actively release the brake from a car they know to be in drive, that is a process that has a physical action associated with it. If any time is passing they will still be engaged with the car by holding the brake.

Not to mention the quantifiable difference in outcome, a 1mph creep is always much less damaging than a 100% accelerator misapplication. So we are dealing with a different risk in itself.

@@BenVallack But that's SUPER RARE. I see people drifting in gas cars ALL the time because they aren't paying close enough attention. Once you get used to stop and hold it's so so so superior. Like, so superior. And it doesn't require you to constantly have to control your car, you can regularly get to relax your leg. Seriously, try it for 2 weeks.

Great overview Ben. We picked our LRM3 up in September and have been loving the car so far. But man…those indicators. You articulate so well here how frustrating it can be! I’ve lost count of the numbers of times I’ve been driving around with my indicator still on and haven’t realised. Tesla could fix this via a software upgrade to subtly raise the indicator audio and simultaneously lower the radio in the mix when indicating so it’s not missed. I’ll try the double press method. 👍🏻 And yep, curbed our front alloy within two weeks of ownership. 🤦🏻♂️

Have you got Joe Mode enabled? That makes the indicator quieter when enabled. I find them pretty loud when that is turned off. Yeah it’s awesome but has a few foibles! Thanks!

No idea on that I’m afraid. I wouldn’t under estimate the importance of having the long range though. I wouldn’t want my range any less that’s for sure. It seems like quite a sweet spot, or a minimum at least. You have to remember theip WLTP in the real world is nothing like that once you factor in not running it scarily low (and avoiding charging to 100% for that matter, although that doesn’t apply to the SR with its different battery), winter, a head wind, and a few unexpected journeys and visiting somewhere without a charger!

Lack of a decent 16:9 landscape screen still puts me off anything but Tesla. They all underestimate the value of being able to sit and watch a film while you are charging or waiting in the car! It’s hilarious to think the reason they don’t add the screens is for fear of looking like they are copying Tesla, yet as a result it is shooting themselves in the foot because it’s one of the best things about Tesla!

The ride is good, firm yet supple. I thrash it over bumpy rural roads and it always surprises me. No torque steer of course, that is lovely. Having said that I have only had relatively cheap Japanese cars up to now so not sure how it really compares to premium German cars. Possibly its weight would reveal itself.

The car sits pretty low so there isn't much travel in the suspension & that means potholes and bumps can be a little jarring at times. It's not tooth shattering but it could be better if I'm honest. That would be my main gripe about the car, it's pretty awesome otherwise.

Nope definitely not, if you are in warm climates you can just hop in and enjoy it! It’s only really beneficial if you want the car to be warm and/or you want to battery to be warm for maximum range on your journey, but you’ll only see that benefit strongly when it’s cold outside.

Yeah although the more I hear about BMW indicators the more it seems like they don’t have the issue I’m reporting here. It sounds like they don’t have this double cancel bug that I show in the video. Really hope they fix it with software.
