I'm super impressed with this. Especially how you got a non 12 tuning to sound sensible in a chromatic chaotic type atonality in "chromacro" which is hard to do without it sounding like random noise.
@benyamind3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I enjoy your earlier explorations in 17-EDO. I find that in 17-EDO dense chords become more vibrant and meaningful, so that's something I experimented quite a bit with in Chromacro. I also find that if you stack the small step in 17-EDO it starts to 'scream', just like the diesis in 31-EDO has that kind of effect so that was also fun to mess around with.

By the way, are you into Digital Mystikz or similar early dubstep? Parts of this album take me back to those days, just taking that sound and making it sound so much more like a combination of different world musics! Other parts remind me of Aphex Twin, and more
@benyamind3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your remarks man! I am not too familiar with early dubstep.. but I did have my dubstep phase for sure! At some point I was even into making dark/raw dubby sounds. Nowadays I sometimes listen to Noisia.. I am a big fan of certain futuristic/developed soundscapes within the dubstep/dnb realm. And yeah I am definitely a student of world music you could say. I listen quite a lot to 'earthly' music and it definitely comes through in the music I make. Peace!
@theskv213 жыл бұрын
@@benyamind that's great to hear! There's a world of difference between Noisia and the dubby dark meditative stuff, and I love it in all its forms. Definitely dig the raw+futuristic, organic+synthetic thing going on in your album. Keep it going!

What is your favorite EDO/TET to work with?
@benyamind3 жыл бұрын
Hmm good question. I'd say 31. It's kind of my base tuning as it has a nice harmonic tone even when you go outside of its 12-tone sound. I háve been enjoying 17 a lot too as it has an interesting dissonant sound and its more tricky to wield. It's satisfying to create a satisfying sound with it.
@simulatrix3 жыл бұрын
@@benyamind Yeah, I was doing some research and it appears that the most popular octave splits (besides 12) are 19 and 31. For the lumatone/terpstra keyboards these 2 blend seamlessly into the way they split the keys, as basically an extension of regular 12-tone. It's actually quite magical. Take a look at the first image with the hexagonal keyboard here: gist.github.com/suhr/248ecc1c96fdcf20d42d8baccef39735 ^You first can notice a layering of the black and white keys as to make a 12 tone system (ignore the octaval C on the right). Add a layer of 7 new grey notes above, and you get 19-tet. From there add 2 more layers (black and grey) below and you get 31-tet. Utilize the whole keyboard (2 more layers top & bottom) and you get 53-tet. Even take away a layer of black keys from 12-tet and you get 7-tet, the most commonly used macrotonal split. There's a beautiful mathematics behind this which I believe will favor these systems in the development of microtonal music. After decent amount of research I'd argue that 31 is the best when it comes to consonance (19 is a close second, for dissonant or more xenharmonic feels that's a different question). 31et.com/page/why-31-et ^This website is dedicated to supporting 31 tet as the best, haha But the most convincing argument for 31 comes from wikipedia itself. Take a look at this image: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_temperament#/media/File:Equal_Temper_w_limits.svg 31 nails so many important ratios in music it's hard to deny its harmony. Compare it to 12-tet and there's a world of difference. Most of these hit with more accuracy to 12-tet or at least as good. It also hits ratios that 12-tet doesn't, allowing for new, unheard harmonies. Some orchestrations I've heard in 31 are utterly breathtaking & of ineffable sound. One drawback, I suppose, is that with 31 notes there's a lot more room for error or dissonance to the untrained player. You have to be even more intentional in the notes you play. 31 is also great notationally. It maps easily onto the 12-tet system we all know and love. Which means you can play 12-tet songs in 31-tet, a major upside. It will sound different, but not by that much. Some people in comment sections note how they're not used to how pure 31-tet's major third is. I'll let you be the judge. Meanwhile, 19 is also nice to notate, but converting songs from 12-tet to 19 is less doable. The point isn't necessarily to make song conversions, but to apply concepts of 12-tet to other temperament systems. I think 31 is just big enough to accommodate new harmonies while still toeing to the original 12-tone without becoming too unweildy like 53-tet and beyond. I think insturments like the lumatone & 31-fretted guitars will be game-changers for the microtonal community. I think 31-tet is set to become microtonal standard at some point in the future (but of course other possibilites welcome). I feel like there should be a nifty name for 31 tet, like thirty-one --> THIRO or something else. Give it a word.

I'd really love to see some theory videos explaining some of this (whatever you think is interesting). :D One thing I think in particular it would be fun to hear about is how you navigate around 31edo, and how you actually set up your instrument. With a Wicki-Hayden layout, it can be a bit easy to stay comfortably wrapped up in its meantone-ness, and miss options that make big jumps around the circle of fifths -- maybe I should break out of that and into something which gives me an easier-to-reach neutral third and harmonic seventh?
@benyamind4 жыл бұрын
Maybe at some point I'll get around to some of these types of videos, they unfortunately are very time consuming. I rarely work with subsets when I open up 31-edo, I try to embrace the tuning as a whole; especially because everything just feels so connected I really wanna have the whole colour palette! It's crazy how 31 relates to the early harmonic series... Thanks a lot for tuning in!

31edo is very consonant, very interesting album! What's the tunings you struggle the most with?
@benyamind2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily say I struggle with tunings but that's probably because I just roll with my preferences and/or vibe at that time. Though if I had to make a choice I'd say custom JI tunings as you are constantly in the process of testing your ear, rethinking your tuning choices etc. Thanks for checking out the album!

Ah! I suddenly realize what you specifically mean. You are referring to the lyric in the track upon us. In a way it's a reference yes! Anahata is the name of the heart chakra in Sanskrit. In upon us I use it just as a bit of an abstract play on words, and here on the album I found it to be a soothing name for the track.
